The Cultured Jews of Spain | The Jews of Medieval Europe | Dr. Katherine Aron-Beller

According to Jewish legend, Jews had lived in Spain since the destruction of the first Temple in Jerusalem in the fifth century B.C.E. Yet it was the flourishing Jewish culture that emerged in Muslim Spain - from around the tenth century to the period of the reconquista - the reconquest of Spain by the Christians in the twelfth century - that was known as the “Golden Age”. The Muslim kingdoms of Spain were the most tolerant of Jews of any within Islam and at this time Jews not only enjoyed general economic prosperity but many rose to important posts in medicine, commerce and government. Spanish Jews also became intellectual leaders of the “twelfth century Renaissance” contributing many of the translations of Graeco-Arabic science and philosophy which filtered into the rest of Europe as well as contributing much religious and philosophical thinking of the time. We will see that the Hebrew poetry produced by these Jews is far more aesthetic and uplifting than the Ashkenazic liturgical poetic compositions of Northern Europe.

Dr. Aron-Beller, would you know of any paintings from the 15th or 16th CE that depict the Sephardic Jews of Spain or Portugal being enslaved? The one painting that I have come across appear to show dark skinned people (black) being tortured. Do you have any information regarding the Yah Yah Negro family of Spain. Some historians say that the name “Negro” was acquired by the Jewish family because the King had given the family estates previously owned by Muslims. I thought that the North African “Berbers” were “white” skinned and not “black”? Last question…when did Eastern European Jews arrive on the Iberian Peninsula? Some literature that I have read states that “Khazar Jews came to Spain to study around the 11th century CE”? Your response would be much appreciated!

@@Yaakovseed The Khazar theory has been debunked by Doron Behar and other RELIABLE geneticists..The Ashkenazi Jews do not speak a Turkic language but Yiddish which is Middle high German with loan words from Hebrew Aramaic and later on Slavic as jews moved East to Poland because Casimir the great of Poland actually invited Jews to his land Between the 1100's and 1300's various Polish kings inacted laws favorable to Jews.
