What a year 1908 was for the piano. Rachmaninoff's First Sonata, Prokofiev's Four Pieces Op. 4, Debussy's Children's Corner, Albeniz' Iberia, and Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit were all released that year. But Bartok's Bagatelles seem to be 50 years ahead of all of the others.

Sometimes it isn't about being 'ahead' but just writing good music
@jeffgrigsbyjones3 ай бұрын
@@Classical4Piano all of those pieces are amazing music.. Gaspard de la Nuit is one of the finest works ever written for piano. But the Bartók Bagatelles coming the same year is almost ridiculous. It sounds like it belongs to a different tradition completely.

Besides the tricky technical aspects, I always love how you never know where he is going to take you. A surprise behind every corner.

in the 4th, the g-# and the f# are splendid. this 4th bagatelle makes think of Satie + *For Children* but more intense. I wonder when people will be conscious of the genius in the 20thC. There are not just either Mozart and Beethoven either jazz and blues.

Beautiful--beautiful music beautifully played. #2 and #10 have in them half-hints of his later "Open Air Suite".

Woah, I've never before made the connection between the third bagatelle and the 3rd mvt of the Ligeti Piano Concerto.

Bartok is trash. The embodiment of the lead paint generation. Smear paint on a canvas like an animal and call it art because it "raises a question".
@GNGianopoulos10 ай бұрын
WOW... no.
@hahhey137210 ай бұрын
What meaning does this comment have? While some "surrealist" artists rely on the rich capitalists, some, like you said, try to raise a question. However, do not be mistaken; music and art are only similar; they are not the same. Infact, I would argue that is what Bartok tried to avoid. He purposely collected folk music in order to stray away from atonality. Instead, many of his compositions are intervallic studies based on folk music he collected in Hungary. Also, please research before making audacious claims.

@@hahhey1372 I'm pretty sure he didn't even listen to this piece, because at no point does it sound or seem at all random or akin to 'smeared paint on a canvas,' - it is highly organized, even classical, at its core. Utterly embarrassing comment.
@mrtchaikovsky3 ай бұрын
@@GNGianopoulos You'd be surprised. I recently saw a comment under a piece by Borodin (!) denouncing it as "too modern".
