Much of this instrumentation and arrangement sounds, to my ear, like the phenomenon of heterodynes through the audio passband of a shortwave receiver, at a frequency occupied by two or more shortwave carriers. There are also rhythms analogous to ionospheric flutter on a shortwave 'skip path' signal reflection. I used to be in the Army and we used R-390 radio receivers with the Beat Frequency Oscillator switched on.

At 11:30 there are "eye" symbols. I wonder what they mean? I can't read French or decipher them from this video.

it's a bit of theatre i think - the violist is being told to watch the violinist intensely. at this point in the live recording of the premiere, you can hear some audience laughter. search "les débuts de l'itinéraire" if you want to listen, it's on France Musique

Dear friends, do you have any idea, why did Grisey call this composition Periodes?

My impression with Les Espaces Acoustiques is that the titles of each movement don’t mean that much. Each one is kind of just a noun, some element that he generally likes to deal with: periods, partials/frequencies, modulations/processes of change, and transients, which could refer both to the technical term of the “noise” at the beginning of a sound’s attack and to the “transient” nature of sound itself. Kind of like if Beethoven named a sonata “motivic development” or “neapolitan sixths.” Don’t quote me on that, but Grisey definitely did have a sense of humor. At least, based on his instruction at the beginning of modulations for a cymbal player to mime as though he’s going to make a ffff cymbal crash before being “interrupted” by the orchestra’s sudden loud entrance. And when Grisey does choose more meaningful poetic titles, he doesn’t tend to hide their meaning. Frankly I can’t help but picture a cheerful French guy spending tons of creative and analytic effort on a piece, and then realizing he needs to come up with a title, so he thinks “Hmm. It has periods in it. Why not just call it periods?” But again, that’s just my impression; I don’t claim to be an authority on Grisey’s thought processes.

« Périodes represents a constant cycle of three part periods which are analogous to the respiratory rhythm: inhalation, exhalation and rest. For the entire length of the piece four long periods are articulated around a series of harmonics which have C as the fundamental note. » - Grisey’s explanation from the first pages of the score. The english translation of this sentence actually makes a mistake since the fundamental is E; the other translations are correct.

No se le ha olvidado nada... El ciclo de armónicos comienza en 12:36 y desaparece en la 4ª parte del primer compás del 16 de ensayo (12:54)
