Belarus protests: Demonstrations enter 3rd week as tens of thousands rally in Minsk

Tens of thousands of protesters against the Aug. 9 election of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko packed the streets of Minsk on Sunday as the demonstrations entered their third week, with the army warning it would respond to any opposition unrest near the city's national memorials.
Demonstrations have taken place in the capital and other towns since the election, when Lukashenko won an apparent landslide victory described as rigged to extend the 26 year rule of the authoritarian leader.
Carrying flags, the streets turned red and white as people continued their calls for Lukashenko to quit and new elections to be held, demands that the president has largely ignored. Belarus' interior ministry in a statement warned any unsanctioned protests would be considered illegal and that 22 people had been arrested Saturday when smaller-scale protests took place across 55 towns and cities.

People have the right and should demand their country's leadership to be better. But often enough people don't educate themselves. These people talk about freedom, desire for justice and other big, exciting, heartfelt words. They fail to realize or willfully forget that Lukashenko prevented Belarus from being torn apart by foreign powers. What happened in the 90s in Russia under Gorvachev and Yeltsin, with enormous chunks of industrial sector becoming property of Russian and Western oligarchs, did not happen on the same scale in Belarus. What happened to Yugoslavia with Western intervention, did not happen in Belarus. In Russia, Putin came to power and nobody saw him coming. As one oligarch said about Putin: "Before Putin, nobody paid taxes. He came, and said: you can keep your stuff after you supply this school, or this medical centre with equipment, and they you can keep your stuff. But you will pay taxes." It's exactly the same with Lukashenko. There should be a statue dedicated to him in every park.

He clearly doesn't want what happened Ukraine, where Western advisors have been caught red-handed fueling the fire. Belarus and Russia are close military and economic allies, and the talks of them merging have been happening since 1991. It's like Canada asking US to intervene, it's not that crazy of a thought, they're both in NATO. Second, Lukashenko asking for aid does nothing to damn him. You put this as your main argument, you didn't challenge what I said about Lukashenko saving the country. So you agree with me on that? Next, if you're talking about Hitler, then you can only talk about Stalin. Hitler killed 11 million people. 6 million people died under Stalinist rule, which ended in late 50s and by 60s Soviet Union did a hard about face and nothing of the sort like Kulak Operation or Katyn massacre happened ever again. Which means you not only cannot compare Hitler to all of Soviet Union, but to claim Russia, a wholly different country now, also is guilty of mass deaths is a farce.
