The bells of the Church of St Bartholomew in Caspano are considered the most beautiful Pruneri bells in the Valtellina, after the concert in Grosio (Italy). From the beautiful portico that dominates the entire valley, there is access to the massive bell tower, which houses a concert of eight bells tuned in the diatonic scale of B major. From the bell tower, there is a breathtaking view of all the snow-covered mountains.
- The five largest bells have been cast since 1878
- The three smaller bells were added in 1902
The original weight of the original Pruneri bells is 6121 kg; with the addition of the three smaller ones, the total weight of the concert is now 7016 kg. In this video, the bells are ringing in concert according to the system of ringing originated in Milan, which involves the composition of musical scales made with the bells.
The parish of Caspano was erected in the mid 14th century, when it was already autonomous from Ardenno. The Church of Saint Bartholomew had been built during the 1100s on an older foundation. The parish church was consecrated on 1 January 1355, while in 1373 the Valtellina was ceded to the Duke of Milan. In 1527, the faithful of Caspano undertook the work of rebuilding the church, which at the end of the work was described as the most beautiful in the whole area. In 1664, the church was elevated to the dignity of collegiate church and was embellished in Baroque style throughout the 18th century. Of outstanding beauty is the façade, which is incredibly majestic and with its position dominates the entire valley. The church is entirely covered with frescoes and old paintings, to which is added the ancient pipe organ from 1683.
