As prey animals whose 1st instinct is to run, horses protect their feet and legs as much as possible. They will turn themselves inside out to be able to step or jump over something. Nervous level working with Roman is 2.

You need to relax Lester. Draft horses are pretty calm as a breed. He's magnificent. I saw Sadie attach to him the first day. It was a beautiful site. Sadie is more safe around Roman than them longhorns. 😊

All of his life hasn't been harsh, possibly when he was with the Amish, but he did have a good life for several years prior to Jami and Lester acquiring him. Pretty sure he's not still as "traumitzed" as they are portraying for sympathy reasons. Certainly he's only been with them a couple of weeks and is still learning the ropes with his new home, animals and humans, and who would not be a little anxious moving into a new place. He's going to be just fine

I doubt he was mistreated at his most recent home before coming to the JL and even when he was with the Amish we don’t know how he was treated. Yes he seems to be scared of whip like objects but that doesn’t mean they were used on him. We should all be looking forward to the wonderful life he’s going to have with Jami and Lester instead of trying to look back at what we think he may have had.

I am sure that Roman grew up with guardian and herding dogs. They are a horses best friend. Sadie is safe with Roman, she would only get injured in a horrible accident, not because of any aggression. In fact Roman would protect Sadie from the cows, he would place himself between her and the cows if there is a conflict. I've seen this relationship between working horses and their dogs before. The dogs will calm the horses, this is one reason why budweiser has a dog travel with the horses. Every budweiser wagon hitch has 2 dogs that travel and live with them.

But he didn't have a harsh life. The guy who had Roman before Lester. Was a farmer who got Roman pretty young. And he loved and treated Roman very well. This comes from the man's wife. However, the man passed away and his widow could no longer provide for Roman. So she reached out to Roman. Not all drafting Horses lead terrible or abusive lifes.

​@@ricks.1092yeah but he did live the majority of his life as an Amish work horse. He was with that couple before Lester and Jami got him, but that doesn't negate the years he spent working for the Amish. You can tell he was definitely not pampered by the scars on his face.

@@tabithamatheney9606 Amish treat their livestock, especially the workers....very well. Because they don't like having to get another one...which cost money. As for scars, a lot of our horses have them. Not from mistreatment. But from putting their nose against the barbed wire. My wife is a DVM, and absolutely loves animals. So I can assure you we treat our animals well. To the fact that one of our barns has central heating and AC. TN had a recent cold snap...which was 12 degrees last THU. And we put the animals in that barn with heat at 62. All of them loved it.

Everyone must remember the Sanctuary motto is "Giving them their BEST LIFE for the rest of their life" "Good enough" isn't good enough for the Sanctuary residents unless it has to be for a while due to circumstances preventing better right away. It's irrelevant if "He's used to it" or whatever is said if you can offer him better then better he shall receive! You are learning Roman's personality his wants and desires and trying to provide the best fit you can for who he is! And if anyone thinks you are spoiling him, well darnit you are!! Happy you're doing that, Lester. Draft horses are more likely to getting thrush and cancour in their feet from standing around in water and muddy conditions. Their feet are the most vulnerable part of their bodies because they are so heavy. I didn't say anything because you already have enough people trying to tell you what to do, but I did want to tell you, good call. Sadie knows who to trust. Bet you wouldn't do that Lester.😅😅😅

I do not like rainy cold weather, it's miserable and messy 😩. I can handle the cold and even the snow we get up here in Canada ❤.
