In this video Danny Craig of Temple of the Tree Kennels shares his love and knowledge of his breed he has dedicated his life.
The Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) is a Belgian shepherd of medium size. At first glance the Malinois resembles a German Shepherd Dog.
Developed in Malines, Belgium, Malinois have a great deal of stamina and truly enjoy working. They are highly intelligent and very active dogs. The Malinois excels at many tasks. In addition to herding, they also do well with police work, search and rescue, and in performance events, such as agility.
People who are not familiar with the Malinois often confuse them with the German Shepherd Dog (GSD), but there are significant differences in the body structure and temperament of the two breeds. Malinois are smaller dogs with lighter bones. They stand with their weight well on their toes, which gives them a square body profile, while today's GSD has a long, sloping back and carries his weight flatter on his feet.
Malinois are fawn-colored, red, or brown, and the tips of their hair are black, while the GSD is usually tan with a black saddle. Additionally, the Malinois has a more refined, chiseled head that the GSD and smaller, more triangular ears.
Many think that the Malinois is more alert and quicker to respond than the GSD. They're also very sensitive dogs that don't respond well to harsh training methods. Some Malinois are friendly and assertive, but others are reserved and aloof with strangers. They should never have a fearful or aggressive temperament. Because of their energy level and sensitivity, Malinois are recommended only for people who have previously owned dogs and have experience with dog training. Malinois are very intense dogs who like to be included in all of the family activities. They aren't well suited for people who work long hours or must travel often, leaving their dog at home.

You didn't write the title so that's cool. I"d suggest you open your mind and see how the breeds are similar in their approach to work. I've talked with several Belgian Malinois trainers and they make the comparison between the two breeds.

Then why aren't Pit bulls used like the Belgium Malinois for police work & guardian work. You know why they are much easier to train & will obey the commands much better.

I wish i will be able to once get a Malinois a chocolate Lab showdog and a Black Lab field dog. Now i have a field lab/pitt mix and she is adorable and a really good teacher and companion to me. Im really happy with this guys mentality, im always arguing with my father about this as he is a classic pure breed means pure, and im like fck your pure if it means sick and weak, thankfully my neighbour has an aussie shep.and he is of the same mind i am so we tried to breed our two dogs so we get a nice strong brave athletic multi purpose dog, so he can guard the house, the animals of.the house and people but still be good for hunting, that can either work alone or in group and enjoys the outdoors just as much as cuddling indoors. Because our dogs are just like that and those are their strong traits so its highly likely they will transfer them on their litter. They get along swimmingly and mine just feels like a motherly type of dog so we decided we would try this out, keep most of the litter for ourselves and see if we can make them work according to our needs. We were all 3 (neighbour has waifu) trained by professionals and can enlist their help at any time, and im not only talking about normal trainers, we have a few police friends in our local k9 unit, we have vets that are dog owners in our dogplay group, professional trainers etc so they are really well off as well as they seem to be in love with each other as they really enjoy eachothers company and work very well one off the other and are both really healthy and active.

@@weedhigh2564 yeah, that is a great idea. My pit and aussie shep mix was the best farm dog we could ask for. She could herd and babysit livestock. My family has a Belgian. She's actually a lap dog, it could be situational since she had been abandoned and was nearly 40 lbs. when we found her. That could be why she's so clingy and sweet, and she's basically been a therapy dog for me. They are deeply emotional dogs that know when you are sad and will lick you until you giggle. She's the best dog we've ever had, most loyal and amazingly intelligent and intense dog I've known. I can't stop praising this breed, they truly are like smaller healthier German Shepherds on steroids. It's a shame that she wasn't utilized as a working dog.

I got one as a puppy and had zero idea what I was dealing with. I’ve had many many dogs and cats and kids NO PROBLEM!!! My boy had severe separation anxiety and was nonstop energy and full of mischief. I was afraid to put him in the car for fear of him ripping it to shreds if I left him alone. He hated the leash. He chewed his way out of his crate. I could not have asked for a smarter,more loving and loyal dog but it was EXHAUSTING!!!! My neighbor called the animal control on me for one reason or the other. When I finally decided to relinquish Willy, the lady at the animal shelter said I was waiting for you to call. She said I was the one that came to your home. She said do you know that your dog is a Malinois? The animal shelter is run by the police department. She told me she wanted to keep Willy. Anyway, Willy has been relinquished the police department where they’re going to neuter him, give him all the shots, clip his nails, and then place them in a good home where they can handle a Malinois. I knew he was a working dog before she told me. I didn’t know about this breed. Ironically, I watched John Wick three last night. They use melon Walla dogs in that movie. What’s the irony? I’ve never seen them before. Anyway please, anyone who wants one of these dogs should not get them if their family. These dogs are working dogs they need to be worked 4 to 5 times a day. And then there’s still not gonna be tired. They will love you with all their heart. Mine never showed any aggression. He was sweet, gentle, loyal and needed my attention 24/7. He is sadly missed but they are going to find him a good home where he can WORK!!!

I've had a Belgium for almost 5 years, having purchased her at 2 years. She was amazingly trained, in fact over trained for my needs. I am in a wheelchair and I use her as a Service Dog. While I chose not to keep up on some commands, like taking down stranger, she has expanded some. Her retrieval, for me a huge dependence, has increased. Not just from a ball being thrown, but dropping my keys, money and more. She taught herself to pull the clothing out of the washer and dryer. But, she will not put it in, nor will she fluff or fold.. She throws my boots at me if I do not dress fast enough. She allows for no time to talk to clerks, once money is exchanged she is wanting out the door. She tolerates people coming out of nowhere to touch her or me. There is a constantt battle of who is leading who. She does work off lead. I had fo purchase a treadmill. Her demand for activity is far beyond my physical abilities. Service Work is by it's nature, hurry to get somewhere, best manners. Lay still for sometimes hours, then hurry to go somewhere. In and out of cars, aware of traffic in parking lots. Much much more. Initially I was hesitant to get this breed. Now, I hope I beat her to the end. She truly wants to please and work for it.

He is incredibly athletic and can leap crazy high-boy do they have a lot of energy! Also he likes to "herd" his pack and keep us all together or within eyesight. He always stays close to us which is priceless when it comes to wandering off etc. I can't wait to see what we can do together in the years to come!

I actually own a Belgian malinois, and i can say that she is very playful. She likes to "hug" visitors, and gets wound up very easily. Only two toys have ever survived the wrath of her teeth. However, she is loving, smart, and very easy to train. Due to being playfully being bitten and tackled, i've grown immune to her attacks.

I agree totally in what hr says.My 'OGD' , old german shepherd, came from Germany and became from a breeder who crossbred with malinois and Germans few generations before. This breeder was known in my club to have the most dogs with what seems genetically protective based characters.In the first week I went with Mex to school/club, it was immediatrly obvious....probably one of the most stable and fast learning pups they ever seen. Some firemen who also did search and rescue, asked me to go in practise with them.From 6months old, all basics were already covered and we went to search and rescue aswell as biting/protective training. Just to say, mine hasn't have any 'official' libe but camr from a known workingline bred with other breeds, just to preserve the pure character. He does however has a long doublecoat and a floppy ear, but a perfect bite, outstanding bonestructure, no 'flaws' what so ever on the health part. And training...well super easy and everyone in any school i visit immediately notice it.Just a great advise this man gives, don't mind 'standards', mind health, mind character....let a dogbreed progress!

Working malinios or Mechelse Herders as we call them in Holland are all atleast above 75 pounds so they can take a man down easier. also they are verry aggresive against anything or anybody not part of the family, they are the best protection and guard dogs in my eyes

One thing I notice with my Malinois, she's not scared of firecrackers unlike with other dogs. She is one good guard dog for she can hear or detect even the slightest sound/s. My mal is indeed very active and yes a little nervy especially when you touch her all of a sudden that's why I always hug her and kiss her. I'm not sure if she was abused when she was a puppy, we got her when she was 4 months old. I always give her a toy or something she could bite on that would give her something to focus on. She loves to play especially the tug of war. She's one year old now and although she has destroyed most of my stuff, I still love my mal.

This is not unique to Mals. It depends on the Dog and its stability. I've owned dogs my whole life including purebred Mals, x Mals wl GSD x Mal, and mini American Eskimos and most of my dogs from not afraid of fireworks. Only dogs with high neuroticism were afraid

True on size, my friend got a Dutch from "top" American lines "pure" he is male but on a good day is 40 pounds she was so bummed, she wanted a protection dog. Mine is a so called Western Shepherd a mix of German Shepherd, Malinois and Dutch, the mix is good sized with unreal athletic ability and drive, much healthier than my German Shepherd
@primalcritters
@primalcritters Жыл бұрын
Just curious where you got your Western Shepherd from because I see a lot of Malinois and Dutch Shepherd breeders advertising their dogs as purebreds and even some of them have papers, but they are clearly a mix of working line German Shepherd and sometimes even American Pitbull Terrier or mastiffs and then bred back because these larger head types and more size you cannot get from a pure Mal or Dutchie. Just like Danny Craig said, they have to out cross for size and improving genetics. Many so-called Malinois and Dutch Shepherd breeders of the working lines get extremely offended if you bring this up, but a rare few are honest and they will say yes, they do have German Shepherd in their lines or they do have this in their lines

Even at 50/60 pounds for a ladge male thats still a medium dog... german shepherds should be well above that.

I think that if you have 0 experience with the breed, you should probably not comment an opinion. These dogs are insanely athletic. With your logic, horses should be slow as shit lol.

Fantastic interview! Always thought that the Mal in Europe was mixed up as they are not showdogs and can definitely imagine that other breeds are once in awhile mixed into the lines to improve/refresh the working lines (focus on other qualities than looks), as Malinois can look very differently of each other. Grew up with and around Malinois' (I live in Netherlands) and agree that these dogs seem very healthy compared to other breeds. Again, great video!

I can see why you comparing the dogs. I have a American Staffordshire terrier and she has unlimited energ, she can run and play for days. the energy levels of these dogs are pretty much the same. I love watching videos that explain the making of the breed. nice video.

You gotta be really careful with the mind of the mal when you buy one, my malinois has an amazing physique but he is too nervous for example... A new dog owner that buys a strong, smart, ridiculously fast and agile mal that turns out to be too nervous is a very dangerous combination

Thank you, finally someone that calls it the way it is. If it was up to me i would have the AKC, CKC and the KCUK disbanded and gone. The last thing I want or need is a hunting dog that all it can do is prance around a ring and sit pretty on a podium.

That's a fascinating talk, and I respect Mr Craig's POV. I entirely agree about open/closed gene pool factors in dogs that are bred for work and for "function over form". It is as true for Border Collies, of which I have had many for 44 years. Breeding can dilute or concentrate a feature in the physique or behaviour. Building in a new line also reduces hereditary disease (q.v. hybrid vigour, inbreeding enhancement). In fact, having had a shollie (GSD/BC cross) too, who beautifully combined the best of both breeds, I see the ongoing development of breeds as positive - after all, the GSD was Max von Stephanitz's designer dog basically. Of course, F1 dogs are one thing, but further along the filial line issues may arise. But positively, the coydog is an example of possible adaptation. They're often 10% GSD or similar and it adapts them to urban expansion. I take well the point about vet inspection and eliminating faults... the brainiest collie I've owned had collie eye anomaly left eye, (no sign of tapetum lucidum, no reflection) and a significant cranial hair whorl. Whilst that was no problem for me - she had an amazing brain, wonderful personality and tireless physicality - I admit, I would not have been comfortable breeding from her. I bred, back in the 1970s, from my first bitch, who had osteochondritis (unaware that was would get that in later life) and I still feel disturbed about that. Vet costs are obsenely expensive now, and such a defect causes the animal suffering and loss of function.

they have put plenty of other breeds into knpv lines...plenty...I'm not saying this guy is spot on with everything...but he is very correct when saying these dogs have other breeds in the line....very correct....only Americans care about purity and show stuff... and he is also correct about malis breeding smaller and smaller...it's a fact. the outcross is needed to keep these dogs over 55 lbs...I could go on and on...but he's right..

In Europe, that's how horses are bred too. What do you know, the many European warmbloods excel as sport horses. They're bred for performance. Lines are open, much the same.

I have 2 rotties, Mand F, my M did training and protection work as a pup, he trained with a Malinois, super cute, so good with my boy they would play on 'breaks' my boy always gulped too much water then threw up, this day he threw up over the malinois, I expected fur flying. But No. I was lucky enough o see him in action re protection and chase down etc , now this dog weight about 1/4 of mine but F.M, these guys are NO JOKE, slammed the bloke. Amazing dogs, id love one but you need 24.7 with them x

My malinois is the perfect dog to me he is that exception. hes good with kids people and other dogs but if a stranger comes close or if he feels like my family is in danger he is on point instantly and that is with basic training from me no protection training at all. And he learns commands in the first 15 minutes literally. Malinois are the best all around breed hands down
