Unlike his incredibly heroic father, Albert I, who literally led charges in WW1, Leopold III surrendered Belgium to Nazi Germany without much of a fight. The people were not not anti-monarchy, they just didn’t think Leopold had the right to be king after such an act of cowardice. Compare this to his father in WW1, the King of Norway, and the King of the Netherlands in WW2

@@SteelWarden but surrendering was the right decision to make, how could a tiny country like Belgium fight a giant powerful country like Germany? It's like a 5 year old boy fighting a 30 Year old muscle man.

@@VenusEvan_1885 I don’t disagree. It was a practical decision, but the same can be said for Belgium in WW1 but King Albert I, Leopold’s father, made the Germans bleed for every inch of territory. Albert I even commanded the Belgians in person at the Battle of Yser, literally leading charges in person. The Belgians won that Battle! I think most Belgians expected something like this from Leopold, but he didn’t deliver. As a matter of fact most European Kings put up stiff resistance, but not Leopold.

@@SteelWarden in WW1 the situation was different, in the second world war militarily Germany was the strongest and the most advanced country in the world , it even invaded France quite easily what do you think Germany would've done to Belgium had king Leopold not surrendered ? Germany would've flattened Belgium just like it flattened Rotterdam, so thanks to king Leopold today we still have many historical and medieval buildings standing in Belgium in their full glory.

@@VenusEvan_1885 I agree. Belgium didn’t stand a chance. I’m saying that a great number of post-WW2 Belgians believed this about Leopold. THEY thought he should have fought more. I wasn’t there, nor am I Belgian. I just read. Could be wrong.. Was there some other reason that Leopold II was forced to abdicate?
