I think the peas are so bland. I made Hoppin John and served it over rice. The tradition in South came during the Civil War. Union troops did not seize them because they deemed them unfit for consumption. The peas kept all of the people from starving. In the South, we also eats some kind of greens to represent money, cornbread to represent gold, and some kind of pork. Pigs move forward to root for food so that represents moving forward into the new year.

Happy new year to You. I am a new fan and subscriber. Other than the coconut milk and a few of the spices this is close to Cajun Black eyed peas and rice. Thank You for this wonderful post and I will be trying this recipe.

I eat them every new year's since I was a little girl. I love them. I love Blackeyed pea salad too. I think there's another dish called cowboy caviar(not quite sure) but they are all good. Yummy. I will have to try your recipe. Looks delicious. When I was pregnant I couldn't stand the smell of garlic and onion. Now, I'm fine...I love the aroma of both. Curry too!! LOL!

Just by chance I have all of the ingredients required so I will make this. Incidentally the I also aquired one of those kives in a similar way. It is called "The worlds sharpest knife" and it is a very good almost universal knife.
