"Gangsta" was originally the lead single from Bell Biv DeVoe's second album "Hootie Mack," but it got pulled because MCA couldn't get approval for a sample used in the song.

The label didn't seem to like it for whatever reason and just left it as a stand alone. If they couldn't get it cleared, it would have never gotten to the point of release nor an actual music video.

@CRRountree MCA stopped all promotion for "Gangsta" once it discovered it had a sample that eventually could not be cleared. The issue with the sample clearance didn't come up until after the song was released. I don't know if you remember, but MCA delayed the release of "Hootie Mack" for several months because of the issue with "Gangsta." That's why "Gangsta" is not on the "Hootie Mack" album, and "Above the Rim" became the release after the album came out.
