Yup. Only Bloodborne comes close to DS1's level design. It is pretty much perfect. Especially in the first half of the game.
@rgerber

The level design is so extremely well put together. The sense of reward of unlocking new passages that connect to other places. It's kind of level design magic of older games- i.e. Doom were every level is kind of designed around it's own hub.

I love solaire because he’s so strong, but in general it feels like the bosses were not designed around phantom summons, so I tend to not use them. Watching him go ham on the bell gargoyles the first time I tried it was so nice though. And I like that phantoms are in the game in case someone gets stuck on a boss and really can’t progress.

I think you should try out other weapons than the shortsword. Personally it's one of my favourite early game weapons, but statistically it's pretty bad. The longsword is almost entirely better, being just slightly slower and heavier. People will say that there are "best weapons", but I feel this is a very individual thing and you should try them out to see what resonates with you.

I Laid waste to countless players, most with ease, with a +10 std. great sword in DS3. Of course I was a higher lvl char, but w practice utilizing each moveset of the fairly versatile wpn ( DS3 had more to offer with attack swing variety as older games mostly) few players even touched me or did little dmg as I sliced them unti death. Never underestimate the "plain" wpns...and 35 str and 28 DeX doesnt hurt either sporting high hp w good armor. DS1 is awesome game as they all are, and each has polished areas and areas that needed more attention, but big picture DS3 has much better battle engine utilizing boosted power of ps4 and what they mixed in from bloodborne. Plus the experience isnt the same, it isnt complete without invasions, helping ppl, summoning ppl to aid you, and the infamous 4 person deep gank squad with end game equipment dropped down from high lvl characters onto level 20 builds....all waiting for you to enter their world. Cuz...ya know...4v1 is totally fair when ur estus is halved right??? Btw, theres nothing in the world more satisfying than killing one of these overconfident groups of cowards when they all charge you. It's definitely not easy and depending on skill lvl and equip sometimes not possible, but melting two right away while the other two run back to the fire and avoid fighting until their damn friends summon back in is annoying yet satisfying as well. After killing the same friend 3 times, the other 2 twice each then finally dropping the world owner all by yourself, there's no better feeling of achievement than this moment. And the insulting gestures you make as their screen reads "you died" one can only hope erects enough rage for a shattered ps4 controller. You gotta play DS3 if theres still a good player base, the multi makes the game much more, though I do personally always solo every boss/area on 1st run as a personal challenge

Just a few tips that might make things easier/clarify a few points of confusion. Try using different attacks when in tight spaces. Your basic attack is a wide swing that will get caught on the wall, but often your other attacks will be thrusts or overhead slashes that won't. Have you noticed that your roll is slower than it used to? That's because you're between 25-50% of your maximum equipment load. You might find it easier wearing lighter armor to get back that "fast" roll. Slower rolls have more lag time and less invulnerability frames. It also causes you to move more slowly and regenerate stamina slower. Note that equip load is determined by your equipped items, not items in your inventory. You cannot backstab while holding up your shield! Stability is the most important stat for shields (followed by physical block%). I'm sure you have better shields than the one you are currently using. Being human is mostly only good for kindling. You can also do summoning, but it's optional. You can hold circle (while not moving) to slide down ladders! You're doing really well! Keep it up!
@DoubleH92
@DoubleH92 3 жыл бұрын
If you're human you can summon NPC's, and other players if you're online via summoning signs. As you said, you can also be invaded by NPC's and other players while human. Bit of a trade off. Kindling bonfires essentially strengthens them, giving you an extra 5 Estus per kindling, up to 20 Estus (10 until you get a special item). It only applies to the specific bonfire you kindled. You'll get bonuses to defense and resistances for any humanity you have in the upper left of the screen. Humanity can be used to rank up in certain covenants. Popping a humanity will restore a large amount of your health. I haven't played this game in quite a while so I'm not as thorough as I'd like to be with this, but hopefully this helps you understand the whole humanity thing. :)
@Obversechaos
@Obversechaos 3 жыл бұрын
Good advice. Humanity also increases item discovery. You can randomly get humanity from defeating any enemy in an area you haven't defeated the boss yet.

These have been fun to watch. It shows that you have been playing Bloodborne, you are really good for someone playing Dark Souls for the first time. Somehow you manage to advance quite rapidbly, even though you use a wet noodle for a sword :P It has been weird and funny how you have so far managed to ignore all the weapons that you have picked up. Spears, axes, polearms... and not once have you been the slightest bit curious to what you have just picked up :D But still you progress, which makes it all the more of a feat, I guess :)

Lol right?? I get a new wpn, it goes for an immediate swingin' fury test to see the moveset she'll get there...bloodborne didnt really encourage using variety of wpns, but souls it's a mush as each will have varying swing speed/recovery, moveset, bleed poison etc effects, and two-handing usually offers even more varience. Hey, who misses the badass true dual wielding engine in DS2 eh. ??dueling two Zweil's, or a fast parrying rapier w light katana/sabre both with high attack spd imbued with toxin?? Ahhh...those were the days. I'd loved to have saw that system in DS3 combined with the charge and special attack. Was great, but couldve been so much more

Stand completely still before attempting to kick by pressing forward and R1 at the same time; if you're already moving then it's too late to press R1. You're most likely making the same mistake you were making with visceral attacks on Gascoigne at first. Also the "forward" is a brief press instead of holding it down.

I'm going to tell you something you're probably not going to like. Rats have the highest chance of dropping humanity. It's not a super high chance, but hardly any other enemies drop humanity. If you're going solo being human has little benefit except for a few seconds while you kindle a bonfire. 53:28 Yeah, he parried. It's quite a strong attack. You can go ahead, and level up. Where to go next would probably be where the black smith is. Go there, and defeat the stone demon, or you can just run past him towards the doorway on the far end of the room. You can see the doorway over your head in this frame. 54:16 If you want to fight him I suggest kindling the bonfire above the black smith.

Hi, Cam. You may want to start parry practice again :). When you were fighting the hollows around the armored boar area you were blocking hits just before getting hit. Those would have probably been successful parries using L2 instead of L1. Also - tiny mechanics spoiler - you can parry from block. Meaning while holding L1 to block, tap L2 to parry and continue to hold L1. If you miss the parry you're still blocking so minimal to maybe even no damage. The main reason to parry is not extra damage, it's invincibility frames, i frames. Same for backstabs (criticals). Mobs can't hit you while in the animation. You're really doing great. Don't worry about missing entire areas, doors, items, anything. Everyone does. There's some sort of dev voodoo magic going on under the Drake bridge. 90% of players don't see the door to the bonfire. And don't worry about us. We know what you're going through. It's cathartic to see others make our first playthrough mistakes. Bigger spoiler - The Drake on the bridge may not always breathe fire. Just sayin'.

Nice work with the Gargoyles! I'd never summoned Solaire before - he hits hard. For where to go next there are some options: - IMO the next place to go would be to utilize the *Basement Key* (picked up at 35:30). See the item description and 21:40 in Part 2 for where to use it. - You can continue past Andre and the Titanite Demon into the garden - I bought the *Crest of Artorias* item from Andre to go deeper into one of the garden paths, but then later found that there's another way around (albeit longer), so you can skip buying that if you want to save the souls - Down below Firelink Shrine there's a path available (as well as a way to make use of the *Fire Keeper Soul*), but you'll run into a dead end at this point - Since you have the *Master Key* there are other paths available down there through a locked gate, but they can be tougher at this point I found it helpful to take quick screenshots/notes whenever I came across a locked door/path or an item that I didn't know how/where to use based on the description. Otherwise I'd forget about them. For reference, I never upgraded any armor until NG+ (since at that point I knew which armor set I wanted to use). For weapons, I'd recommend trying out a few Dexterity-scaling types and/or researching a bit before investing much in upgrades. Titanite Shards are pretty easy to find/buy, but I found higher upgrade materials to be rarer compared to Bloodborne. Read further for a personal recommendation for a weapon and how to get it: --- I played Sekiro first, and used the Chikage and Rakuyo in Bloodborne, so I wanted a katana in Dark Souls - one of the only things I Googled for my first playthrough was where to find one ASAP (I also Googled where to find illusory walls, since they're BS IMO). You can get one early by killing the merchant that you bought the Bottomless Box from (46:45 in Part 1). Be sure to buy everything that you want from that merchant first (e.g. the *Repairbox* ). I used that katana for the rest of the game (and for DS2, DS3, and Demon's Souls PS3/PS5 actually) following the standard upgrade path and never felt that my weapon was holding me back. It can also be ascended (transformed into a couple special weapons) using a boss soul later, so it's good to get anyway IMO. I also played all the Souls games two-handing my weapon for the most part (never using a shield), which was super fun IMO. It feels better in the later games since they have improved rolling mechanics, but even in DS1 I loved the faster-paced style of not using a shield. It took practice though to get used to the timing of when to roll, and which attacks to roll away from vs rolling through, but by mid-game I felt confident against pretty much any enemy/boss. Katanas aren't for everyone, and they require some investment in Strength to wield one-handed (even though most of them scale really well with Dexterity) and some in Endurance to be effective IMO, but I really like their moveset (e.g. the vertical R1 slashes and the running or one-handed R2 pokes), relatively high damage/scaling coupled with decent attack speed, and their Bleed effect which can chew through some beefy enemies/bosses. Note that two-handing a weapon increases your Strength stat by 50%, so you could two-hand the katana in the meantime while investing in Strength. Anyway, that's just what I did. I'm sure you'll do fine with whatever weapon/build you enjoy. Have fun exploring Lordran!
@GamePaddyPat
@GamePaddyPat 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, kicking is pretty finicky and you might want to practice it a bit. To hit forward and R1 at the same time is harder as it sounds. Even after playing all the Souls games, I can't do it 100% of the times I want it to happen. 😂 Edit: You can look, if you can upgrade your sword, if you want to keep using that. Other than that, your good and should spent it on levels. Also, if you get keys, read the description, it has some hints in it, where the corresponding door might be. 😉

I just recently started dark souls myself and I use a metal shield as a warrior class. I find the "thunk" that happens as a sword gets block using a wooden shield so strange. I'm only use to the sound that metal on metal makes in the game. I've been watching sword thunk on a wooden shield for a couple of hours now and it still seems strange. I don't think there is a "normal" way to kill the metal pig. I have watched 4 fights against it and there were 4 different methods used to kill it. I had a 5th way. So I guess "normal" will be if I ever find a method that 2 different people use. However, this is what I'm liking about the game so far. There is no ONE way to accomplish goals. Many methods work.

Or just buy the cheap-ass 300 soul reinforced club from the first merchant in the Undead Burg. Its got that R2 automatic jump attack that blows sheilds away (two-handing it works too, of course) AND it causes bleed. It has the highest base damage of anything you're likely to get your hands on that early in the game. Make it Divine plus 5, and its a perfect Catacomb-cleaner, because its short it doesn't get caught on the walls, and the R2 one-shots even the big skeletons (Right up until the Tomb of the Giants. Post-Pinwheel, you'll need something harder hitting) Sucker Absolutely CARRIED my newbie ass until i had the stats for the Claymore (Which got promptly ditched for the Halberd, which took me almost all the way to the end)

This and the heater shield, both items you can pick up right away, can make the early going SOOOO much easier. But the beauty of this game is that it DOESN'T push you down an "optimal" path. Just a couple soft humanity makes a notable difference. I get the Black Knight sword in undead burg more often than not with just 2 or 3. It maxes out at 10, though. The only thing carrying more than 10 humanity gets you is slightly more curse resistance.

If you get a bow and some arrows, you can go under the bridge at the beginning of the video and you can shoot the tail off the dragon. If you do this, it drops a sword called a Drake Sword and it's pretty good.

This point she is still making the stereo typical dark souls errors. Losing thousands of souls due to overaggressive exploration, sticking with minimally effective combat strategies rather than learning new ones, not using her soul items, not reading her weapons and equipment, giving up on mechanics rather than learning to do them (such as the kick). It’s a little painful to watch, but no doubt the breakthrough moments are coming. That should be good. Yes

Please...upgrade your gear its critical in DS franchise. The Smith sells the first tier stone unlimited for reasonable price, this should tell you how important upgrades are as DS gives you nothing easy!! Farm a bit of souls and buy about 6 stones, will get ur wpn +4 (3 more to +5), lvl 4 is fairly Inexpensive and 4 levels will increase your dmg out substantially more so on better wpns (lose the short sword and find a wpn/won class u like b4 wasting upgrades). You should decide as early as possible what build type u wanna be, which also,pairs w wanted playstyle and wpn choice, as well as char. Stats growth I'm hoping u wanted to be a DeX build seeing how high u made it so early on. This isnt bloodborne; stats have very different effects on some and do multiple things. Use your "help button" in status screen and read what each stat controls. A skilled player would struggle if given a prebuilt char. with wrong stats raised high and wrong wpn choice upgraded. Wpn class and specific wpn from it even vary stat interactions, but here stats and wpns are hugely codependent. A wpn with an A or S dmg bonus (dex builds, rapiers, katana, in general faster weaker wpns many w bleed) on dex and an E on str would do little dmg on a lvl 100 character with 50 str and little dex. Same, str builds (hammers, blunt wpns, most ultragreats) will use these wpns with large str bonus dmg (A is good, S is super high) to crush enemies in massive dmg single blows. I like midground, swords and great swords that have lower dmg bonuses, but have modest bonus on dex AND str, maybe a C C. or a B. C for str/dex...I love mix builds as they are highly versatile and get much more dmg from swords like this than pure dex or str builds would. Equip a wpn w high str bonus, in 2nd slot equip one w high dex, and when u level up change ur str point and observe your dmg how it changes. Itll increase str wpn by 3-4 dmg/point, but dex won only gets one or possibly one every 2 str points. Opposite is seen when raising dex...this temp. Equip of several wpns you are deciding between as u level up (having souls for 5-8 lvls is best as u can see long term changes without committing the points) is a great way to help guile yourself which stat to raise and it helps you learn how various stats affect your character. Everyone needs some defence, stamina, equip capacity, and hp, but different builds in general slack some areas to maximize others, like a str build uses huge heavy wpns so more carry capacity will be needed, but dont expect to fast roll ull never get it high enuf (till L220 plus)...but being a tank w huge def armor behind a sturdy shield who needs to roll?? On dex though, you'll focus more on equip weight being high enough to stay fast rolling based on armor u use but just high enuf for that; you may have to settle for the 2nd roll if u want decent protection until late game with rings to boost equip capacity tho, but dex must go over half as they rely on speed and dodge. High dex skill wpns are light, fast and for dodging/moving fast styles going for backstabs and parries; good shields require str to wield and get very heavy, so dodging is the dex's defence where high stability shields protect str builds, stable means more attacks bounce off interrupting enemy combos as well as how much stamina you load when struck while guarding. (This is why the demon beyond blacksmith ate u so easy...use a shield w %100 physical block and 54-60 stability u can block both hits and still have stamina to roll. *I just opened a new build, killed it on level 16...properly selected equipment that matches your style and stats is just as important as good technique in souls.) Keep in mind though I had the drake dragon sword, it's great wpn for first several areas w huge 200 base dmg. Still easy doable without it, but it makes it much faster. Get by bow-sniping the red dragons tail until you kill its tail and it breaks off giving u this high powered secret hidden wpn. (Do from under bridge) Remember the tail breaking for wpn as you continue the game...many bosses can be de-limbed for hidden equipment, and DS1 is full of hidden optional areas with great gear so stay alert and explore everything! Enjoying your playthrough (below %25 equip weight is fastest roll instant back on feet, 25-50 percent, or under half, roll a bit slower but takes much more time to get on his feet, 3rd over half but under 75%is still a roll but a very unuseful one as it's short, slow, and takes a bit to stand...over %75 tapping circle is the only surefire way to get hit by the attack as you can map and grab a sandwich b4 he gets back up) PS. ***partial spoiler alert*** not really, just a good tip for farming experience early on as you've seen its needed...so why spend 2 days doing what u could achieve in several hours? Another optional area in garden (behind demon) is buying the 20k souls item from the blacksmith asap, use it just inside garden area right before the 1st fog door...it opens a large gate where you will fight NPC characters as enemies. They are challenging at first and you'll need drake sword or a good dmg wpn +4 minimum (I used Zwil ultragreat 2-H here with minimal armor for fast roll, then put on stone armor and went tank.

But it's worth it because each one drops several thousand souls per kill...adds up fast to get that stat boost you know you need!! Key is reveal the illusion wall hiding the bonfire just b4 this gate u unlock here ( to left of entrance, attack at stone wall to open hidden bonfire, kindle for 10 flasks helps greatly) to quickly respawn enemy (not all respawning so dont feel overwhelmed the first time in) and for close access when you die. Other key is enter slowly trying to draw one at a time. You'll get swarmed a few times till u see where everyone is, then killing some that dont respawn also helps and before you know it, you'll be farming up 20k souls in no time. Area also holds some of best heavy armor in game, as well as the best bow in the game with a few other nice items/gear. Just be careful, as an optional powerful area you dony wanna challenge this boss yet...much later he is tough
