I had Dr. Guy-Sheftall as a professor at Spelman. She really challenged my thinking of the role of women in relationships within the household. I can honestly say, that our class discussions have really shaped my views and allowed me to appreciate my marriage, my role as mother, and made me more cognizant of my interactions in life. More importantly, it has tremendously opened the dialogue on the roles of women in the world, now that we have two little girls.

Jamie Owns Bell Hooks is a woman who talks about the problems of both men and women, things that feminism have neglected etc. She says that the mistake feminism has made is failing to understand the negative impact patriarchal standards have on men too. This seems to me not only rational but very important. Yet I see a lot of people (men in particular) flying off the handle saying that patriarchy is completely made up because men have problems too...which if anything THAT is what is fucking insane. lol. I agree some feminists are nut jobs, and I don't always agree with everything other feminists say but maybe understand what Bell is talking about then make a judgement
@Neen88

Its not all about the law though, its about structure and roles people play. You can change the law that doesn't mean patriarchal sexist ideas don't exist anymore, they do, and they effect both men and women. There are laws in place to punish people for discriminating, that doesn't mean people don't still do it, and that you don't still see reflections of it in our culture
@Neen88

Jamie Owns well I guess people equate having a mens day with the idea of something like a 'white history month'. Depends on the purpose of 'mens day' ...if its a day to pay attention to male accomplishment, then maybe I would laugh at that because male accomplishment is often acknowledged anyway. However I do think more attention needs to be paid to mens issues. I think people have a limited view of what success means and therefore think men have everything...thats another thing bell talks about ;)
@Neen88
@Neen88 8 жыл бұрын
Jamie Owns Well this is the thing, do you not think sexism is extremely harmful?? Whether against men or women? Laws and practical advantages are all well and good, but thats not necessarily the be all and end all. Just because women have been taken care of in certain ways doesn't mean theres nothing else to talk about. What about the way we view each other? Look at sexual abuse. What about how many women are raped and abused? On the flipside how about the fact that its so hard for men to speak out if THEY have been victims of sexual abuse...why is that??

+Dennis Deem It is a discussion of a bell hooks stream of consciousness because it is led by bell hooks. I understand what you're seeing but it is hard divert the discussion except from the perspective of bell hooks, when she's leading the discussion. And none the less, she and Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall are marvelous. But, no it is not just you.

What about a radical feminist scholar at the Bartlett School of Architecture telling her female PhD student to shut up. True story. Why haven't we spent more time thinking about how women have learned to abuse other women in retribution for their own abuse. Abuse is not gendered. Overall, professional men have treated me in a much fairer ways in both academics and the office.

+Mancheeze is it to say that by simply being "masculine" that you MUST dominate others? Both men and women have masculine and feminine sides, it's not about doing away with masculinity or emasculating men, it's about being a good person and not brutalizing each other (plus, a lot of women through their hard work are ALSO in halls of power in just about ever institution, ESPECIALLY white middle-class females). Women aren't the only ones that must unite against oppression, WE ALL must untie against oppression.

I like your comment. I would add, I think it's more about patriarchy as a system of domination, than it is about "masculine" men or women as such. I would like to think there is such a thing as "healthy masculinity" - which is decolonized patriarchy. What do you think?

I am not sure what you are entirely on about Manuel. Here in the realm of this discussion we are not just talking about brown as a random color, but a color that is synonymous with ugliness and being deficient or "less than" in some way. I hope for a world where a little children of any ethnic background can look at each other objectively and see beauty reflected in the differences of color and ethnicity and have that reinforced by a diverse and truly tolerant and multicultural society that is not a homogenized, "color blind" society, but one that begins to embrace difference and organically build tolerance between people. It is a devastating bi- product of white supremacy, that the color spectrum has been racialized. And I am not advocating here a homogenized vision of a color blind society, but a society in which all colors are noticed and valued for their unique qualities . And for women that have an open disgust for and/or feel threatened, or sensitive to male domination of any sot it is a contextual reflexive response to an historicized inequality,misogyny, that is institutionalized that continues to get propagated in an age of liberal individualism masquerading as equality and shallow pluralism- thankfully we have the work of feminists of all genders working to eradicate this hateful practice in concrete ways. And I would just like to reiterate that there are many men that feel this way too, and feel the constraints of patriarchy and other practices of domination on and in their lives on their journey to becoming more loving and self actualized. Words without action are empty and undermine and devalue their meaning. Feminism is not just an ideology it is a political form of resistance to institutionalized patriarchy(supported, aided and abetted by the white supremacist capitalist hegemony) and requires action and agency not just on the part of women but anyone that has claimed that title for themselves otherwise it just becomes diluted in the marketplace of ideas and loses its power- not because it is not relevant but because it is hollow, specious and lacks the revolutionary spirit in which we can re-imagine relations between the sexes, and races and re-imagine what the words feminine and masculine are prescriptive of... And the appeal of a black character Doc McStuffins as cool- just not her skin color is preposterous, "cool" is not synonymous with white supremacism- and never should be. And the premium of "cool" is very overrated and overvalued in Western culture. bell hooks you are an inspiration and your books make me feel a little less alone in this world. Thanks! Also I believe that by defining racism and sexism she gives us the very tools to bust through its hold on your consciousness she breaks out of the box and hides every lock (yes I paraphrased kendrick's lyric):) Phew! Peace and love to everyone- One.

1:10 Hooks saying to the young women struggling to ask her question, 'you've gone on a little too long.' when it is she who kept interrupting. Feminists are not able to act in a way that is consistent with what they ask from men. Let's ask feminists what they claim to achieve through their own sense of superiority towards other women.
