If you heard the words “You are free of cancer” you’d probably feel like singing and dancing - or maybe you’d want to ring a big bell so everyone could hear! That’s how kids at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick celebrate when they reach a milestone or the end of their treatment. Purchased with donations, the bells hang in the Oncology wards of the Hospital and form part of a beautiful ritual for children when they finish chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
Children ring the bells and staff gather around to sing a special song written by one of the Hospital’s Music Therapists, called ‘Happy End of Treatment’. It’s a moment of pure joy and celebration for everyone - and a symbol of hope for other families who are still on the long journey to recovery with child cancer.
