This brings back memories! I was assigned to A Troop, 1/17th Air Cav, 82nd Abn Div way back in 1980! I trained in the original G-model Cobra during transition after graduating flight school, and at that time we had the "Production S" model that still had the minigun and 40mm in the turret, but with the HSS, and TOW, TSU system. Later we upgraded to "ECAS" with the 20mm and before I ETS'd we got the "Modernized" Cobra with the Rocket management system detailed in this video, and the Doppler Nav system tied into the weapons system to enhance targeting accuracy.

I served in the 82nd Airborne Combat Aviation Battalion. I worked on Cobra helicopters weapons systems. Guns, turret , TSU, rockets, tow and hell fire missiles. Thanks to all my brothers that served. God bless.. Was the best three years of my life. I even played in a band off post on weekends..

Some dumb ass walked in front of the cockpit beyond the roped off area. The guy in the cockpit looked up. the gun switched from TSU to helmet rail control. The gun swung around and broke the guys legs. threw him 30Ft.

I was stationed in Germany when B Attack Helicopter Company of the 501st. got their new S models. They had added so much to them, they ended up having to put counter balance weights in the tail boom. The bird was so heavy you had to fly with either 1/2 the fuel load or 1/2 Ammo. The we had a TWX come to us that we had to do air frame inspections every 50 flight hours to look for Flexing, Cracking or Working rivets. It was a total mistake.

We didn’t have that gun in our AH1S in Germany. We had the regular two guns and tow missies plus 2.75 FFAR’S.

Jordan have just donated 2 AH-1S to the Philippine Air Force and for 2 years have been refurbished by the PAF and it is now Operational. Originally this 2 AH-1S came from Israel but was transfered to Jordan. The PAF is supposedly will get another 2 from Jordan but there is no information whether it will be pushed through. The US also approved the Sales to the Philippines the AH 64 Apache Helo's and the latest AH-1V Viper Helo but this are expensive but the Philippines acquired 6 AT-129 ATAK Helicopters from Turkey and supposedly that 2 have been delivered last Dec 2021 but for reason the Turkish postpone and delay the delivery of this Helo's. Also the US Marines is retiring their Squadrons of AH-1W Super Cobra and we hope this will be offered to the Philippines and the PAF Helo Pilots can Fly this Helo's. When I was in the US Navy on board the USS Wasp LHD-1 and USS Nashville LPD 13 we have a Flight Operations of the Marine Corps AH -1W and is well maintained by the Marines on board USS Wasp. I say that it is One of the Best Attack Helicopters in the World today.

Can AH 1S be upgraded to AH 1W.
@evulgenious4 жыл бұрын
No The W is derived from that T which has a much heavier duty drive train and tail boom.
@farpointgamingdirect Жыл бұрын
No. The AH-1T had a twin GE T400 with a combining gearbox, and the AH1-T+/W had a GE T700 w/combining GB. The increase in power necessitated an upgraded 45 deg gearbox w/ accompanying drive shafts and hanger bearing assys, as well as an upgraded 90 deg gearbox for the tail rotor. The AH1S had a single T53-L-703 powerplant if memory serves. I worked on the AH-1T powerplant and dynamic components as well as the UH-1N and CH-46 in the Marines

The helmet used does not have a proper designation that I know of, it's just referred to as the cobra helmet (it's a modified SPH-4)

Like a Phoenix...the tank destroyer was reborn...tanks were knocked down to 3rd most important weapon in the arsenal of the Cold War and the attack helicopter became 2nd; only WsMD was more powerful. P.S. the Cobra could use both 7.62mm Miniguns and 40mm M129 Auto Grenade launchers(one type or two each, but the minigun had to be placed on the right side due to feed problems)in the M28 turret, which in my opinion made the AH-1 more powerful and versatile than the AH-64.

For many years, the Snake was one of the few aircraft in the US inventory that could fire Sidewinder, TOW, and Hellfire missles. That and it didn't crash just because someone talked on a radio...
