as a person that uses bloomers/shorts whenever wearing skirts. yes, they do not replace actual underwear. they are there to make sure nobody sees your actual underwear. also during winter that help by adding extra warmth, which is a nice bonus.

my camera nikon fell into the pool a couple of years ago too. i cried desperately bc it was my most cherished posession, but after leaving it to dry for a two weeks it turned on just fine! the most important thing is not to turn it right back on. i ended up having to buy new lenses for it bc they got foggy but i just got the cheapest one. you're probably not going to read this but i just hope you dont just throw it right away cause it might still work! xx

Just an FYI for people who don't know using any dye stuff l, do not use any kitchen utensils with food again. Meaning if it touches the dye or any of the fixatives you can't use it to make food again. The dye stuff will leach out into your food and is toxic and carcinogenic. Dyes are considered skin safe once set, but the powder and the steam are not safe to inhale or ingest. Obviously if you die something with tea and coffee, it's not the same thing as various dye stuff. Just buy cheap second-hand pots, measuring spoons and spatula to be your dedicated dye tools.

The bloomers in the photo you used for your set are actually called "French Knickers" or "Tap Pants". French knickers started in the 1920s but grew in popularity through the 1940s. Yours came out great. Love the lace detail!

Mum remembered wearing them in the forties and fifties, they made them at school in sewing. And you did wear them as undies, you didn't wear something else underneath in that era at least. I made my own, after mum sketched out a simple design, and wore them for years, until it became quicker and easier to buy knickers from the local supermarket. French knickers are great in a hot summer, ok in winter if you wear stockings but a real pain if you wear tights in the cold. Speaking from experience. I might go back to making them to wear with my many shifts if I get the time and can get afford lightweight linen.

Hi Bella, so happy to have the sewing videos back and may I say, you hit a home run! These back out beautiful, they are both very romantic and agree that they do look very Cinderella. The chamise is probably my favorite of the two projects because of how modern it is in appearance, it could even be worn as an outer piece for a night out and no one would think it's part of a costume. This is the reason I missed your sewing videos because you make some truly beautiful, elegant and timeless garments. Great job Bella, great job.

@JenniferBristol
@JenniferBristol 3 жыл бұрын
They're very pretty and perfect for a 1920s Flapper Dress. Great colors, too. Undergarments serve a purpose. The chemise keeps the corset and dress clean of sweat. It's also easier to go to the bathroom in split drawers. When first making dresses, I made the mistake of mixing eras. It doesn't work, because each era's undergarments serve for that specific era. **With a corset, you need split drawers. The 1920s didn't have a corset, hence the closed leg drawers. You'll also see the difference in chemises for ballgowns. Anywhere the dress may touch the skin is covered by the chemise. They're not plain either. They have pretty embroidery, tucks, ribbons, and lace. Split drawers are decorated in the same way. I've used the embroidered cotton fabric with scalloped edge as my drawers. It comes in different colors, and is very pretty.

The colour looks so good on this fabric. Great work as always, pattern is interesting, too. I just wanted to ask something: I thought chemise should be seamless or as seamless as possible in order to be comfortable under the corset. Is it like that? On the other hand, I was thinking about it and I guess that a seamless chemise is usually looser which means it makes wrinkles when worn under the corset. I would love to know opinion from someone working with costumes. Also RIP your camera
@BellaMaesDesigns

That's very true! My fabric is extremely lightweight so each seam isn't too think. And yes, the wrinkles are also something to consider, but honestly even when there's a lot of wrinkles it doesn't seem to bother my too much!

1:49 I wanted to point something out that really hasn't been addressed in your videos, on the far right picture of Lily James wearing the dress, you can see a very crimped/pleated material on the very bottom layer. You can see it in the film as she's dancing and in one other photo behind the scenes. What is that? It's clearly underneath the crinoline and not attached to the skirt/petticoat. I'm genuinely confused on what that is. Could it be part of her undergarments?

It would be great if the pattern for sale has different sizes instead of one small size...I was excited to buy your pattern for this but not my size! LOL!

Currently I’m not sure how to best make a multi sized pattern. But this winter I’ll be looking into it and will hopefully be able to offer them!

Drawers are underwater bloomers are like bike shorts under a skirt. They are basically modesty shorts.

Dyeing is scary for me so when you dropped your camera I was like, "Yup, not doing that!" but then it turned out so pretty that I am reconsidering, lol! Sorry about your camera, though :(

I *think* “drawers” are crotchless- so when women wore these very elaborate dresses, they didn’t have to discombobulate to use the facilities, they just kinda popped a squat.

That's a bummer about your camera. I gasped at that point. The chemise and bloomers is very pretty though and I hope there are not any more oops!

I do it all the timd. When you swim in a pool you put your whole body in bleach. It won't hurt you unless the concentration is too strong.
