The Gunness farm was located on McClung Rd. in Laporte Ind. A interesting fact is that the basement and foundation of Belle's home is still there. Sometime after the fire her property was purchased and another house was erected on the same foundation/Basement of Belle's former home. Across the street from Belle's farm is Fish Trap Lake which would have been a perfect place for Belle to have disposed of a victims head. Just walk across the street and pitch it in to the water. Her handyman Ray Lamphere was convicted of arson and incarcerated in the Indiana State Prison in nearby Michigan City where he died from T.B. The Laporte County Museum has a section devoted to Bloody Belle.

What an evil woman. She definitely planned the murder of those children. Its a story that leaves you wondering about all the people involved. Those gruesome bodies made me shiver. How can someone do that to another human being? She had to be stone cold. I hope those little ones and the men she killed arr resting in peace.😔❤

So enjoy your rambles through cemeteries with such interesting stories. Some may find this odd, however my Gramma and Grampa's home was near a large cemetery. Growing up my cousins and l would frequently visit to check out the amazing gravestones and speculate on the lives of those buried there. We even cleaned up sites, crayoned paper over gravestones, brought flowers, and paid special attention to infant and children's monuments covered with grass. It was a peaceful, reverent time for us and l appreciate our grandparents allowing us these memories.

I grew up in Laporte and the first time I heard the name Belle Gunness was in 1989, I was in 8th grade and had to do a book report on her. Her story was very creepy back then and still is today. If you ever get a chance, visit the Laporte County Historical Society Museum. There is a pretty unique exhibit with some original items from her farm displayed.

I read this story when Crime Library was still around. I always thought Belle fled town after killing her children and the other woman. She wanted Ray Lamphere to take the fall for everything. They did dig up her presumed body and tested it, but the tests were inconclusive, when I last read anything. Your suggestion of comparing the sample to Esther Carlson is a good one. Great job :)

The La Porte Historical Museum has excellent info on Belle Gunness. I am sure they can answer any questions you have. Bruce Johnson, a member, would be a good source of information. Peter Gunness and Belle's foster daughter, Jennie Olsen, who was also a victim of Belle, and Belle's last victim, Andrew Helgelein, are buried in La Porte's Patton Cemetery.

What a fascinating story! That initial act of cruelty turned Belle into an evil woman and wow what vengeance! Looking at her picture, she had a strange look about her, a coldness. All those victims, and her greed for money, she was bold and ruthless! That farmhand looked strange too! Geesh she sure knew when to skip out of town fast. I agree with your theory Ron, Esther looks like a dead ringer for Belle, and getting the DNA from Esther compared to the kids would have been very interesting! I sure hope the bodies of those children are reinterred , they deserve to rest in peace. Thank you Ron, cool episode!

This case has always intriguing me. I also think it's the maid that they found and not Belle. She was way too cunning, luring all those men to her farm and getting away with it. Thank you for all to the investigative work that was put into this, Ron. I held onto every word , like years ago when I was in college or graduate school knowing there would be an exam on this later. It's really a pretty complex tale. How intimidating she must have looked at 6 feet in that era! It's a combination of greed and blood thirsty revenge for sure. Would be good to find out what happened to those bones of the kids and the female after the forensic study was done. Keep us posted if other details surface !

I was unsure of the paternity of the children exhumed, but if they are Mad(s)? Sorenson's children, they need to withdraw their samples and reinterr them next to their father. As a father of 2 young kids myself, I'd want to be next to them if they died so young. The fact that they haven't is somewhat infuriating.

Ron, I have a question. Do we know how tall Esther Carlson was? Was she as tall as Belle Guinness at being 6 foot tall ? If so that would be a coincidence.. 🤷🏻♀️But of course the DNA would be a better match. Just thinking ..🤔 I hope we get some updates on this story .. Great job Ron 👍
