Awwwww *blushes over the internet* I'm so glad you like this!!! I didn't even realise it was sold out!! It's really a great duffle (save the lack of laptop carry) - hope you can get your hands on one soon! Btw, it looks like black is in stock at the moment although the chalk is still sold out... :(

I just purchased this exact same bag today along with the small toiletry kit in black. The versatility, lightness and compactness of the 30L size is what sold me, for gym and travel use. The 35L was just too much capacity to accompany my 27” height check-in luggage piece.

Thank you for your in depth review! I’ve been looking for a gym bag for going to bjj classes to fit my gi! The opening is what sold me as it’s easy for getting in out my stuff. I’m 155cm and this doesn’t look too big on me. Perfect gym bag. Love the design and it’s light weight too!

After watching this video (and your other videos) a dozen times, I finally pulled the trigger and bought this bag. So happy with the purchase. It is exactly what you said it is, and I think I'm really digging this two bag travel style even thought it's technically "less minimalist" than one bag. Thanks Mountain!

Hi Masato! I'm so glad that you found my video useful and that you're happy with your bag!! And yes, exactly - this is great for a lightweight "two bag travel" setup. I believe that travel should be an enjoyable experience and while traveling ultra minimalist one bag often sparks joy, sometimes it's easier and more pleasant to do a lightweight second bag rather than torture yourself by trying to cram everything into one bag or leaving something essential behind due to lack of space. It all depends on the trip and the use cases. At any rate, Happy travels!!

Hi Eliot! You've got it! tl;dr - I really like the Bellroy Lite sling and was pleasantly surprised at how functional it was. It's like the original Bellroy Sling, but updated with some great lessons from the later Sling Mini and Venture sling, in one lightweight package. It's my second favourite sling after the Venture sling these days. The only real downsides I found are - no stretch to the fabric which means it can't be overstuffed (no hidden gusseting or anything like that either) and obviously the small-and-lite design/structure means there is a limit to what you can pack into it (though it does hold a surprising amount). Finally, while it has more pocketing than the original (same sized) sling, I found myself wishing it had just one or two more internal pockets (i.e. another internal side wall pocket or inner top flap mesh pocket like the Venture) - that would have made it just about perfect in my book. So that's my two yen - great sling overall. Will ping you when I release the full review though! And I'm so glad to hear you picked up the Bellroy transit and that it's been serving you well!!! Stories like that are why I make these videos (both so people can pick up good bags that work well for them but also save their money on buying bags that aren't right for them). What country is up next on your list? (^^)

@@TheMountainborn Hmmmm thanks for your thoughts. I'm gonna try find one locally to take a looksie. I'm currently in Singapore, over to London next. It'll be interesting going from one of the most humid places on the planet, to english winter haha. The transit has been great at ensuring I don't pack too much, and now I'm on the road I honestly couldn't imagine trying to bring anything more with me - in particular weight. I think a sling could be a good pairing though, I don't have a daypack with me, and while the transit was slim enough to use as a day bag in a place like Sydney, Singapore is just a crush of humanity, and the heat makes a backpack not practical. Locals don't carry them really, so that's a sign haha.

Hi enial100! So it looks like these might be unique to North Face Japan (I don't know the full details, but TNF Japan has considerable freedom to iterate and release designs that differ from the US/rest of world lineup). Here is the product landing page for FW 2020 (scroll down partially and you'll see the pouches I introduced in the video) www.goldwin.co.jp/tnf/special/urbanexploration2020fw/02/ (in case you're wondering, Goldwin is the JP distributor of TNF and a bunch of other famous brands here in Japan: corp.goldwin.co.jp/eng/about/history ) Direct sales are limited to Japan but if you search you might be able to find resellers (Rakuten, Amazon JP etc.) that will ship overseas. The pouches / bags I showed in the video were Glam Pouch S - the small electronics bag Glam Pouch M - the larger bag with random doodads/battery charger (this is the older v1 pouch) Glam Travel Box S - the "packing cube" I used for my clothing. I hope this helps!

I’m curious how this compares with the Aer Go Duffel - both have a great “pack/roll flat but still stylish EDC use case” and great volume to weight ratio with strong fabric. Tom Bihn Yeoman Duffel Small also has similar dimensions and volume to weight ratio. The Go Duffel is discontinued though, but they plan to release a new model in the fall 2022 season.

Surprisingly (because I own most Aer products out there) I never actually picked up any of the Aer Go line v1 - I think the aesthetic reminded me of the Peak Design Packing Cubes with a giant buckle on the front 😂. Comparing this to a packable duffel from Matador as a companion to a backpack, would this have a big advantage? It seems more structured but also weighs more (600 vs 240g). Did you have the chance to check it? The Bellroy Weekender is the better looking, but the backpack I use (Apex) has already all the necessary compartments for laptop, tech pouches, water bottle. This duffel would be just for carrying packing cubes with clothes and a pair of running shoes. Again, great job, love every single review!
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose! First of all, thank you for the kind words on the channel! So I have the original v1 packable duffle from Matador, as well as a bunch of their other packable bags (the v1s, v2s and their on-grid series). In my experience, the matador bags mainly (this starts to change a little with their on-grid series that has slightly better features/build) serve as true "packable first, almost emergency-use" type bags, whereas the Bellroy Lite Duffle is more of a very lightweight but completely usable EDC bag (duffle) that can also be packed. By which I mean, I basically used the matador bags as something to keep stuffed in my bag and then use on the return trip if I bought too much stuff to fit in my main bag, etc. Obviously it is possible to use it primarily as a main secondary bag across the entire journey (i.e. the use case you describe - bringing your shoes/packing cubes to/fro in a 2-bag travel scenario) but there are a fair number of compromises you would make in the process - much thinner straps that tend to cut into your hand if carrying for any extended period of time, thinner material that is more prone to rip/damage, less basic functionality like pockets for those odd bits and bobs you accumulate along the way/internal organisation etc. That having been said, of all the packable duffles in the Matador series (I wasn't sure which one you were referencing) the On-Grid duffle would probably be the one that I'd say comes closest to the Bellroy Lite in terms of usability as a main second bag in a 2-bag travel scenario whilst still retaining far superior packability. (In general I am a fan of the Matador On-Grid Series - i think they make much better compromises between functionality and weight than some of their other bags). Since you mentioned you already have all the organisation you need in your Apex then I think the Matador On-Grid duffle might be a solid alternative to the Lite duffle - mainly consider how long you need to carry the duffel and in what conditions (i.e. super long hand carry and maybe constantly tossing between compartments/airport check ins, etc. → may want to go with the Lite, otherwise Matador will probably work just as well and be even lighter) One last thing - you mentioned you only have shoes and a packing cube. Have you considered a packable tote (such as the one from Matador)? This will likely be able to carry everything you need but pack down even smaller than the duffle and personally I find a tote works better than a duffle when paired with a backpack for 2-bag travel since you can wear the backpack and the tote over a shoulder at the same time leaving both of your hands free (but not need to worry about the bulk of a big duffle) I hope this helps!
@josegoncalvesdias3242
@josegoncalvesdias3242 2 жыл бұрын
 @The Mountainborn Thank you for the detailed answer! It is really nice that you not only give thoughtful reviews, but also take some time to answer the comments. Much appreciated! The tote option is also a good idea. the 2-bag situation has some compromises vs 1-backapack considering "hands-freeness". Even with an over the shoulder or in Tote mode. I might also try in other way, with my Matador SEG42 on my back with the clothing and the Black Ember Forge (-20 18L version) used over the shoulder. Then the heavy part is on my back and the reachable and safe space for tech is easy and lighter to carry, I just wish that traveling would be less of a constraint for more try-and-error possibilities. Thank you again!

@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cameron - thanks for the kind words! The bag itself I would label as black without a navy tint - that's probably the lighting + whatever video compression KZbin applies - however it's not the absolute black-blackest black out there. Not charcoal or dark grey, but it is something of a slightly lighter black, mainly due to the material and how it holds the dye I would imagine. (as a point of contrast if you put it next to a standard black cordura nylon bag like an Aer bag, or a Goruck GR1/2, to my eye, at least with the ones that I have, they seem notably darker black)

Is it also possible to carry it like a backpack for a short period of time?
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi E. T.! Unfortunately, not really. I don't think most adults would be able to fit their arms through the carry straps in a manner to enable backpack carry, and even if you could it would definitely not be comfortable. If you are looking for duffles that can be carried like backpacks, some options to consider might be bags like the Northface Basecamp Duffle, the Boundry Supply Aegis Duffle, Porter Yoshida Three Way Duffle, Mystery Ranch Mission Duffle, etc. In the Bellroy world, you might want to check out their Flight Pack - it's not quite a duffle, but it does enable three way carry in a similar fashion. I hope this helps!

It looks like the zipper design does not close the duffle completely. There is a gap between the bottom of the duffle and the top zipper on two sides. Is it possible for small items to slip out of the duffle?
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam - Bellroy has been moving towards this style of opening in many of their bags/slings (esp. Venture line, but also this lite series). I haven't had too many problems with things slipping out, especially in the larger duffle bags. However, I am very careful with how I close the bag - I think in the smaller sling form factors (I believe I mentioned it in the 9L Venture sling review) if you're not super careful it can be possible for the main zipper to be closed in a way that can enable things to slightly slip out from the inner side pockets if the sling is super roughly jostled on the back during everyday wear. In the bigger duffle bags, firstly they are usually more static and often upright and secondly usually you don't have such small things in the side pockets. So I found I didn't really have this problem (there is also a much larger physical size wise overhang of the side zipper flap area). I could see this potentially happening if you didn't zipper the top closed all the way / had smaller things in the sides of the duffle and/or often inverted/tipped the bag sideways (i.e. stuffing in an overhead compartment especially if one is a bit shorter and has to tip the bag "upside down" slightly while reaching upwards to stuff it into an overhead) For me, I have gotten used to this form factor and it personally works pretty well for me, but the chances of things slipping out are not zero.

I have a hard time choosing between this and the 40L venture duffel. Guessing that's the travel version you're referencing? I don't know if you have any thoughts on exactly how much more capable the 40L venture duffel is when it comes to travelling. I was thinking the 30L lite duffel would be sufficient for trips of 1 week or shorter while still being suitable as a gym duffel and better for carry-on luggage
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi WarDog! Actually I think when I made this video the Venture Duffel hadn't been released yet so I may have been referencing the Weekender or Weekender Plus (I need to re-watch the video to be sure - do you happen to know the time stamp for when I mention a "travel version"?) I do now own the Venture Duffle - it's quite large and relatively unstructured as a duffel so my guess (I haven't tried it on a real trip yet but based on past experience and from test loading it) is that it is going to be quite cumbersome to hand carry for any extended period when fully loaded. In other words, while the Lite Duffle can work as a capable weekender and can be hand carried in a scenario such as navigating through the airport, from train to hotel, etc., the Venture 40L duffel I would only want to really be moving from the back of the car to maybe the airport check in counter or something similar. > I was thinking the 30L lite duffel would be sufficient for trips of 1 week or shorter while still being suitable as a gym duffel and better for carry-on luggage Yes 100%. I personally would consider anything larger than that in the duffel format really just for limited point to point gear haulage (back of truck to hotel room, back of car to airport luggage check in, etc.) - unless it also has backpack straps (i.e. TNF Base Camp duffle). 30L can be a great size for the use cases you mention and I think given the generally very high capacity to size ratio of duffle bag form factors (especially lightweight ones like the Bellroy Lite Duffel) should give more than enough space for a week+ travel while usually being okay for carry on/gym use. The biggest challenge with duffle-style one bag travel is finding someway to carry the laptop (most duffels don't have a slot for it) both in the travel mode and most especially in the EDC context once you arrive at your destination - generally a small secondary backpack or (large) sling alongside the duffel will solve this problem or else a packable backpack inside the duffel (I think I may have mentioned that solution in this video). I hope this helps!

Coming from a senior citizen, the bigger the bag the more tendency to carry (I say carry) more stuff. Without wheels, the bigger bag gets more unwieldy to carry specially for older people. When I was young carrying a large duffel bag was not a problem.

@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi J L! Ah yes. So basically I think this bag has several challenges that made it not work very well for my particular use cases (and for what I think a packable bag should be able to cover). Your mileage may vary depending on what you like to carry/preferences. 1. No laptop/device carry (for anything large than a small iPad). There is a back pocket in the main compartment that looks it could be for this (more on this in a sec) but it bizarrely and for no reason at at all - narrows aggressively at the bottom which means you can't even fit a svelte 13" MacBook Air or 12" iPad Pro in here. This is such a bizarre, strange oversight that basically rules out tons of super-normal use cases one would commonly carry a packable bag for - especially one that is so heavy/bulky as this one. Forget about using this as a work bag/edc bag at a destination if you are planning to carry a laptop in it - unless you're going to put the laptop in a bulky case and drop it in the main (unpadded, unsupported) compartment to flop around. Totally bizarre. 2. Bag seems to have some aspirations to be an "active/sporty/outdoor pack" but ... it isn't. Okay remember that weird non-stretchy (more on that in a sec) back panel that narrowly tapers and is bizarrely useless for carrying a laptop? Well if you look at the Bellroy website, they have a photo that shows a water bladder in it seemingly implying you can use this as a water bladder pocket for your active adventures. As it so happens I do a lot of hiking/camping outdoors and often use packs with water bladder pockets. This pocket is absolutely not that and that photo is a lie. Why? Here is what is missing: 1. A water hose passthrough hole - non, zero, zilch. How are you supposed to route your hose out of the bag to drink from? 2. No tie downs/areas to secure the flopping water hose on the shoulder straps (basic oversight) 3. The pocket is not stretchy (more on this in a sec) - means the bag bulges out the back uncomfortably when you try to stuff a bladder in there instead of expanding into the main compartment. 4. No hook / loop in the inside top of the main bag to attach the clip from the top of the water bladder - you need this to get the water bladder to "hang" from the top of the bag so it feeds well as the water level starts to drop as you drink instead of just collapsing into a squishy ball at the bottom of the pocket. It's like a water bladder pocket made by people who have never used a water bladder in their lives and/or marketing ran amok without every actually consulting with the people who designed the bag. In any case, this is not a good active/sporty/outdoor pack. 3. Bizarrely, there is no stretch to any of the fabric, including the internal pockets which makes them very very hard to use, especially because they are all rather tight/small/mostly lacking in dimension. I found the top internal zip pocket way too tight even just with my keys in there (like most people these days my car keys is a big remote blocky thing which itself takes up tons of room in this no-dimension-having, non-mesh pocket - then you try to jam your wallet and a pair of earbuds in there annnnnd). The other internal pockets are kind of weird shaped - one in particular is deep, narrow, flat and non-stretchy and I had no idea what anyone would practically store in there - a small flashlight or knife I guess?) 4. I hate the sternum strap. That's just a personal thing but this is the same POS sorry excuse for a sternum strap they have on the Apex Pack and like... I get it's a design choice and they must think it's cool or something but I just... find it utterly lazy, ugly and not-that-useful. That having been said I guess I'm glad it at least has one, as packable bags often omit this. 5. Finally, this bag is quite bulky when it "packs down" (which really just means, folds over once or is laid flat). This means it takes up a lot of space in any one-bag setup which makes its flaws - most especially the lack of a usable laptop compartment - particularly egregious since you're trading off so much more space for it - I think that's the part that annoys me the most. The weight itself isn't too bad however. Overall though, I think the compromise of size/weight/functionality puts it in this odd spot for me where I feel like there are probably better choices (Matador On-Grid Packable backpack, Tortuga Packable Daypack, Mystery Ranch In-And-Out, etc.) out there - but the Bellroy does come tantalizingly close in some areas (appearance, materials) which makes its self-inflicted wounds so lamentable IMO.

What do you think of this vs the Aer Go duffel V2?
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn Жыл бұрын
Hi F A! Great question. I actually like both of these bags and found them comparable in many ways. The Go is ostensibly a packable duffle but I didn't necessarily find it any more packable than the Lite duffel. I think overall they both work very well in similar use cases, with most of the differences coming down to personal preferences, chief among which are: 1. External (Aer) vs. Internal (Bellroy) water bottle pockets 2. Single set of "shoulderable" handles (Aer), or else shorter hand-carry handles + separate shoulder strap (Bellroy) 3. Traditional center-opening style (Aer) or the asymmetrical side opening style (Bellroy) 4. Preference of the various orientation of pocketing (both worked well in my experience, just depends on preference) 5. Aesthetic (matter of preference) Beyond the things mentioned above, I found I could carry slightly more in the Aer bag, but I found I preferred the overall aesthetics and "feeling" of the Bellroy. I found myself being rougher with the Aer and taking slightly a bit more "care" with the Bellroy but that's not necessarily due to difference in their material but just how the bags seemed to speak to me. None of these are good or bad, just difference (i.e. I am more likely to take the Bellroy as my main duffle in a car trip in an urban style trip, whereas when I want a second bag to haul a bunch of stuff overseas and possibly be a big rougher with, I'm more likely to reach for the Aer. Depending if you're using this more as a duffle or as a weekender: the just-released Aer Travel Weekender will fit up to a 16" MacBook Pro with a little bit of extra space left so depending on how much larger your 17" is it might fit in there. It's not quite the same style of bag as the Bellroy Lite as it (the Aer) is about 5 L larger and has a lot more organization etc. but it might be something to consider.

@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn 2 жыл бұрын
You got it (sorry was away for a couple of months dealing with something, back now) -I have been using it a little bit but overall my impressions to date is that it's in a bit of an odd spot - you really really need to be wanting to carry a lot of stuff (and thus weight) in a duffle bag form factor (i.e. either by hand or by single shoulder strap) to be able to use this bag effectively... which isn't generally something I (and I would imagine, most people) enjoy. I did find that it's useful for the gym use case (where you need a big duffle bag that opens wide to carry bulky but not necessarily super heavy stuff) although it seemed a bit fancy for a gym duffle to me 😂 The integrated shoe pouch is... interesting? but seems really half finished and oddly out of place to me (it's just a drawstring pouch that semi-attaches to the bottom ?). Some slight internal organization (that nice Bellroy mesh) but on the website they show a laptop and there is no capacity for laptop carry other than just throwing it in the main compartment, same as any other duffle (compare this to some duffles that have integrated laptop carry compartment). Overall, it's just a giant 40L duffle and while I don't usually comment on value for price, I did personally find it hard to justify the asking price for this bag given that there is just so much competition in the "simple giant duffle bag" category and I didn't find this one so dramatically distinguished from others. But I do need to spend more time with it to really figure out my feelings, those are just initial impressions.

@@TheMountainborn thanks for your initial feedback, I agree that it’s too big for a duffle, I’m not keen on the internal mesh storage, I find that it’s too high and ‘overhangs’ over what’s stored in the bag. I had planned on replacing my Bellroy lite duffle with the venture duffle but the venture lacks any structure when trying to pack and as you say 30L is plenty to fit all of my stuff in for a short trip.

For the laptop owners just invest in a padded sleeve or leather padded case from Incase or Thule.

Agreed - that's the solution I use when carrying laptops in this duffel. The downside is that in the absence of a dedicated pocket for it, the laptop tends to "lean" or "fall over" if you stand it up vertically on the side - just kind of aesthetically unpleasant and a little annoying as it can impede access to the main contents when you're rummaging around, but definitely usable and totally carryable. I found the duffle is too narrow to lay anything but the very smallest of laptops "horizontally" on top of the main contents (though that works well with tablets including those with keyboard covers).

Hi, if you are just going to fill this bag up with clothes about how many piece will this bag be able to hold?
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn Жыл бұрын
Hi Bren! That's a tough question to answer as it depends on a few things: 1. The type of clothing (light synthetic t-shirts take up a lot less space than say jeans or sweaters) 2. If you use packing cubes and/or compression cubes 3. If you prefer to just throw the clothes in or if you make an effort to range roll/tight roll them. 4. Gender and/or type of clothes you wear If you can give me some general answers to the questions above, I can try to make an estimate for you. However, in absence of that, I would say for the "average" male traveler traveling in warmer weather (meaning no big puffy jackets or sweaters) you could fit a week's worth of clothing in here. For *experienced* one bag travelers you could fit more clothing in here than you would need for indefinite travel (assuming only clothing in here).

Hmm I have a question can I use this as a road trip bag?
@TheMountainborn
@TheMountainborn Жыл бұрын
Hi @22th_era - I definitely think there are scenarios for car road trips where the Bellroy Lite Duffle works really well and myself have used it for this purpose multiple times. It has a wide opening top access which is handy when you want to see inside quickly/fish things out whilst it's sitting on a tailgate or in the trunk, has a very high capacity to weight/space ratio which is great for packing maximum stuff into a small space, is easy to carry from the car to the hotel room for example and can stand up to the rigours of a regular urban-style car road trip. That said, if your road trip takes you far out into the wild/outdoors or you expect to be in a lot of rainy / grimy / dirty conditions OR you have a ton of stuff you need to carry (i.e. in the winter for example or if you have lots of gear) you might start bumping into the limits of this bag which is not waterproof, is durable but not as much as more outdoor-intended bags and has a 30L capacity. So you need to judge your needs versus this bag, but for most relatively civilized urban road trips I think it's a great bag! Note that I recommend you also bring either a small backpack or sling as an everyday carry piece since a duffle is not the best form factor for walking around at your destination etc. - this is more like the main bag holding most of your clothes and such.

I have it in white. the best gym duffel I own! (btw - you spelled Duffel wrong on the title lol)
@TheMountainborn

Oh oops!!! Good catch! I just checked and while apparently both spellings are acceptable “duffel” is more common (and matches how bellroy spells it) so I updated the spelling. Thank you!! ☺️✨

@@TheMountainborn Any idea if aftermarket shoulder straps can loop into the attachment points? Such as Tom Bihn Absolute Strap/Optech SOS strap Also their attachment points were a missed opportunity to match the Venture sling style which uses the weight of the bag against the shoulder strap to apply some compression (making it a more form fitting carry, especially if lightly packed out)
