Belly-scratching bear among a surge in recent Southern California sightings

Wildlife officials in Southern California are fielding calls and gathering data on what appears to be a surge in black bear encounters this year and in recent years.
Bears have been spotted in residential areas of Sierra Madre, Monrovia, and Castaic within the past week. On Monday, officers attempted to tranquilize and relocate a bear that wandered through a neighborhood near Castaic Lake.

​@@shamaniworld528it's not a brown bear, it's a black bear. Black bears come in different colors. A brown colored black bear is called a cinnamon bear. A brown bear, also called a grizzly, doesn't exist in California. Grizzlies can be identified by the hump on their backs over their front legs.

Leave the bears alone. They are the California state symbol. Sadly, our rivers, lakes and valleys have been so polluted. There are no fish, fruits or berries left for the Bears to eat. Less human pollution, more environmentally, friendly Wildlife!

I love bears. I live in a rural community and had one in my backyard. He was just relaxing and ate some fruit from my fruit trees. I named him Bo Bo . We have had a nice relationship for a few years 🎉

In 2008 he trained a bear and it killed him that was not a wild animal he trained it it was domesticated and he pissed it off and it killed him you're just trying to make the Bears look bad

I don't think bears hibernate in Southern California. If they do, it's just the bears at the highest elevations in places like Big Bear. The bears in the foothills just slow down a little in the winter.

People have to realize animals don’t hear an EV approaching. Whenever I drive through a quiet neighborhood with mine, I slow way down. Cats just sit there till I honk at them. I urge people to be extra careful with there EVs, especially in parking lots. Also when coming up on cyclists on the road way. I was almost hit by a guy speeding by me while on my bicycle. I never heard him, till I saw him pass me. He passed close to me in his older Hyundai EV.

The California Grizzly, a regional subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos), is the state symbol and extinct. But American black bears (Ursus americanus) are still very much around. To make it more confusing, black bears can be black, brown, cinnamon red and even white. A lot of the ones in California are brown. Brown black bears.
