I love how Belos is the perfect anti Luz. Luz sees the best in everyone while Philip see's the worst and is incapable of changing his views. Luz represents the best qualities in humanity while Belos represents the worst. He is a bigoted, stubborn, vengeful and manipulative. It also hammers down one of the main themes of the owl house. I remember in the very first episode Luz protested how the emperor jails witches who are "different" or wild. Luz is considered to be someone who doesn't conform to society's standards back in the human realm and felt a sense of belonging in the demon realm (this also applies to Eda who practices wild magic). Belos is the exact opposite, he is far from accepting. He upholds the standards of the society he grew up in, a society that hates people who are different (witches) he refuses to change his ways and continues to enforce his beliefs no matter how out of touch they are to reality. He is willing to kill (even to his OWN BROTHER) and destroy just to make everything bend and fit to the antiquated mindset he grew up in. He is the perfect villain to this story. It's crazy how the most vile creature in a realm full of witches and demons is a human.

LOVE the way you worded the ending. It's incredibly ironic how Belos without real magic is the biggest threat to the Demon realm. And Luz and Belos really are great foils for each other. Two characters with similar starting points end up complete opposites.

@@ZeezVovGee2 I also love how this series is giving me a really scary and messed up version of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. Both are humans who came into a world unlike their own. One made a lot of friends along the way and another one conned his way into power (i mean the wizard was a legit con man back on earth). The latter disguising himself as someone who is part of the world he is currently ruling in (the wizard having this whole fake display of smoke and mirrors in his throne room and was hiding behind a curtain while Belos mutilates himself to look like a witch and made a faux magic staff that seems to combine science/tech and magic plus a bunch of historical revisionism)

No at first I didn’t really get why they decided to reveal Belos’s face so early and without any real buildup. Him with his mask on is so cool so I didn’t really get why they revealed it like they did. I felt like taking away his mask got rid of a lot of his menace and intimidation because he was just some old guy…… but after this episode I don’t believe that anymore and I am terrified of him without the mask

They shroud his face and always back light Ozai so that you only ever see his silhouette which makes him menacing. Then season 3 they reveal his face and he's just a really beautiful dude who is an awful person. But after the reveal the only thing left making him menacing is the fact he was willing to kill his own son, which was basically acted upon with the Banishment. But in the Finale they turn Ozai into a joke after they take his bending. Somehow The Owl House made a mysterious Villain MORE/EQUALY menacing after a face reveal!

He was the perfect agent, but Belos knows he can't hide his true self from him forever. It is a weird dynamic of Belos knowing well that one day he has to kill his brother again, and again, and again.

Cause looking at him when he still went by Philip Wittebane his ears her round like Luz's, but now their pointed like all witches on the boiling isles have them. My theory is that the brother fell in love with a witch and she became with child. This child is a ancestor of Eda's. My other thought is that instead, maybe Belo's brother could have died another way, and that the blonde with his face in tact could be actually his nephew, who feel unloved with a Clawthorn, and Hunter is based of Belo's brother instead of his brother. I say this only because, the brother is clearly older than Philip, but the panting with the palisman abomination Philip begging hugged, the blonde man looks too young to be an older brother compared to Philip. Added that HIS face is not scrubbed, but the older brother's is suggests a different person.

Also, the dagger that Belos/Phillip has is the same one (or just the same style) that Luz takes from Eda's armory at the start of the season 1 finale. Luz is rummaging through Eda's weapons while getting suited up to save Eda from the petrification and she grabs a jagged dagger that's nearly identical to Belos'. (It could just be a common dagger design in the Boiling Isles but it's kinda cool anyway)

I think i know why those later paintings don't have Belos' Brother's face etched out like their earlier ones. Those first few where happy childhood memories of Philip and Caleb playing together, which Philip is internally trying to repress to absolve himself of guilt. The later paintings are of Belos' betrayal of blood and the subsequence murder of his brother, which he does not feel guilty for at all because in his eyes, it was Cabele who betrayed him, not the other way around. He's been telling himself the same lies for so many years that he's come to accept them as truth.

I didn't spot those images when I first saw the episode, but I figured his brother had to have turned on him at some point because he mentions each of the Grimwalkers always turns on him. Like that part of his brother that fought him to the death is still a part of them somehow, no matter what form they take (since Hunter looks most like him, apparently).

I don’t think that he actively turned on him. I just think he was a good person who just fell in love with the boiling isles and a witch. Philip interpreted this as betrayal however, because he is really obsessed with his hate towards witches. In Philips mind his brother betrayed as soon as his beliefs simply contradicted his own. I believe that his brothers grimwalkers might not only carry his brothers looks, but also his good heart and conscience. So it makes sense that all the grimwalkers might’ve questioned or even criticized Philips behavior. Philip even sees critical questions as a form of betrayal. Hunter simply had questions and Philip chose to kill him.

And yes I believe that he really meant it because he was talking to the Collector, and has literally no reason to lie. I theorize that the last image (philip in front of the mirror) is when he cut his own ears so they'd match the shape of the witches'. Think about it, he currently has pointy ears, albeit not as long as the others'. How did he get them? Transformation magic is one option, but I doubt a witch hunter like him would actually directly use the magic of witches (he uses runes and pure magic essence of palisman). Besides, assuming he did carve the runes on his skin, it means he is going to go as far as to hurt himself to follow his plan. So him cutting his own ears as soon as "Philip got kicked out of too many places" to appear to be naturally born in the Boiling Isles seems logical. Also, he's got a dent on his ear like hunter, which could mean he accidentally cut too deep while doing one ear (which would match the face of apparent extreme pain in the photo, as well as the dark liquid in the bowl, that being blood, and the piece beside the knife being that big chunk of ear. That also explains why his hand is to the side of his face, same side where his dented ear is. He is porbably holding onto the cut to prevent hemorrage).

As seen by some art work by Dana, the mask that belos/ Philip wears was carved by his brother (as you said) and he made some fixtures to it. But, the mask in which the past golden guards and hunter wore, were based on the mask Philips brother had made for himself. OH! And in the episode “Elsewhere and Elsewhen”, it is shown, a book with information about grimwalkers and how hunter has red eyes! Which is because of the Galdorstone that helps make them. 🫠

The Wittebane brothers are the founders of Gravesfield, and the Connecticut witch trials started in the late 1640s. We know Phillip had and was using the portal for a while before it ended up buried near the Clawthorne residence, so it's entirely possible that Phillip returned to egg on the trials. Caleb is the name Flapjack suggested to Hunter when he went undercover at Hexide. The most logical reason that Flapjack would suggest that particular name is because it was the name of Flapjack's former owner, and that owner was almost certainly none other than Belos' brother.

I will like to point out that in the episode where hunter becomes friends with willow and gus, in the very beginning where he fixes his cape. You can see the same shape of dagger in the wall. It's not the same because hunter has a little crown at the end of his.

Now cut off half, they become a half cirle. If we look at his ears when he was still Phillip and his ears NOW, he's definitely done something to them to appear more pointy and witchy- Not to mention that white thingie to the right of the dagger in the sink might be a chunk of his ear flesh- Also his hands seem to have a little bit of blood on them, so...that's just my theory on it

I had a feeling that, when you look at the one with belos looking on the mirror. I feel like he cut his ears so he can camouflage with the other witches, it would make sense with him holding his side of his head and the thing in the sink.

In short I think Flapjack was “Caleb”’s palisman, carved by a Clwthorne, perhaps the witch Caleb fell in love with. Also Belos changed his aspearen e to look more like his brother out of some greif stricken guilt of someone sort, or missing him. Also I think Belos cut his ears to be pointed, exposing why they do small, and why they are relative size of Luz’s ears. When ya look at other witches few to none have them like his. Especially ones that look more human than others. This is SUPER LONG but here’s some theories ; explanation ahead 😋 So we all know how flapjack immediately attached to o hunter, or at least drawn to him, and we know that “flapjacks” is a human word for pancakes back in the old days nothing that would be on boilin isles, flapjack told hunter that was his name, and in the footer jockey episodes where hunter meets willow, Flapjack comes up with the name “ Caleb”, the name that was floating around as Belos’ brother’s name, I think Flapjack was Belos’ brothers palisman. There more… We know how “Caleb” whittled the mask for young Belos, and so it’s a stretch but once Belos and Caleb got to ises and Caleb learned more about magic and witches and how they weren’t bad that he met a Clawthorne. Specifically a parliament carving clawthorne that may be the witch we see Caleb holding hands with in a mural. I think Flapjack was made for Caleb by that witch(maybe aclawthorne) and so was a major reason as a of why Flapjack hitched along with Luz but in the end stayed with hunter, maybe cuz he resembled his old friend Caleb. Also in the mural of a Belos with long blonde hair, and bowl with liquid in front with the knife that supposedly killed Caleb, we know Belos, PHILLIp, was a brunette, and no chance of blonde and blonde highlights like his bro, and in the newer epi he said he eventually had to change his name, well I think Phillip maybe used any blood or something on knife to change his appearance to resemble his brother. another thing I thought through series is when u looks at Belos’ ears they look RLLy short compared to majority of pointed ear witches, and kind dame size as Luz’s, He probably cut his ears to fit in, and not stand out as a “human”. Now I think he maybe both changed his appearance to resemble his brother, to either manipulate someone that knew of caleb(prob not), or mostly out of missing his brother I some twisted way of greif. We Know They we’re close, they were brother thick and thin and it must’ve felt like a “betrayal” when Belos saw his brother taking I the watches and prob defending them from the witch hunters and hunting trials ways. I think Belos did LOVE His brother for him to say Caleb “betrayed me” Over and Over, and I’m not excusing him, but it’s further told he was gut retched by either Caleb befriending witches or after his brothers death, blamed it somehow on witches, and is why nearly all of Caleb’s faces of memories about maybe Caleb’s doubts of witches being evil, or memories where thatve mayve talked they’d “ hunter Evelio witches together and stay with each other or anything similar was ever expressed to Belos(then Phillip), and so are those memories scratched out. If ya think about it apart from memories where murals showed Caleb was on “ Philips side” not with the witches were the only ones we saw Caleb’s face not scratched out. This show is going to go VERY DEEp, and I RLLY hope we get to venture into the murals, although I doubt throughly, due to nature of story told by them.

I think the portrait of belos with his hand over his ear and the dagger in the bowl is the memory of him literally *carving* his ear into a pointy shape to blend in with other witches. This would also explain the chip in his ears, it’s because he messed up in the middle of doing it. He probably gave hunter the chip in his ear on purpose to make them looked related, or to make the chip look like a genetic thing so nobody would get suspicious or ask how he got it.

I love this episode because of the character development of Emperor Belos, but development as a villain. We already knew the emperor was the big bad, but now with all the light that has been shed in this episode, we now know belos to be really evil, in a personal matter with Luz and Hunter.

Did you realize that the brother lays in the same position as as the Titan? the right arm is stretchet out to the right and the right knee is still up. Maybe just an easter egg but still noteworthy. How do we have adult statues when they came to the boiling isles as teens? Did they come back after a while, were there more options to travel between the worlds? From what I gathered from the episode (in the order I found them) here's what I can conclude from each memory: The first two pictures we see are of Belos as young Philip with someone who looks like an older brother. This older brother looks like Hunter, but with a ponytail. The picture on the left is of Philip and his brother standing around making something. I can’t conclude what this may be, but the brother is scratched out. The picture on the right, there’s Philip with his brother who looks to be carving the mask we see Kid Belos wear throughout the episode. Once again with his brother left out. In the next photo, the boys are pretending to be like the mob of adults who are hunting Witches. The brother on the left holding a stick up in the air, Philip on the right doing the same. Again, the brother edited out. When Luz and Kid Belos have a more friendly meeting. The background holds the next memories. The one most left and the two on the most right are too “fogged” to have a related memory. But, the one between the two recall the two brothers meeting someone with magic. The brother (censored) is more in amazement while Philip is more cautious. The next visible memory is of an older Philip greeting witches, the diary behind his back. The first photo out of these is Philip’s brother (some theorized the name Caleb) hugging Philip. Philip is dark with blue eyes looking like he “ate” Palismen, and “Caleb” is not scratched out. He looks exactly like Hunter. Next, we see a photo of Philip looking up angrily at his brother, who seems to be holding hands with a pregnant woman. Maybe symbolizing that Philip’s brother fell in love with a witch and eventually had a child. Some have theorized this to be a Clawthorne descendant. Following that, we see a memory of “Caleb” looking back on his brother smiling and waving hi, but we all know disaster will strike because Philip holds a dagger behind his back (similar to the diary earlier). Then, the following memory holds a fight. There seems to be fire engulfing the brothers, some theorized Philip used Fire Glyphs. Philip is also there holding the dagger in plain sight in front of the scared brother. The next picture ends in tragedy with “Caleb’s” dead body over a burning flame and Philip’s reflection in the dagger. The next photo isn’t as explicit but we all can conclude someone, who looks like the previous pregnant witch, attacking Philip after he had killed his brother. Philip becoming Belos at this point, we see a memory of him looking like he’s creating the first Grimwalker of his Brother. The next painting is of Belos trying to gain more power, so he “eats” some Palismen. Following this, a picture of what looks to be one of Belos arms with the glyphs acting up. The next painting shows Belos more deformed and struggling after abusing magic by eating Palismen. *Sorry this was so long

Low key, with the era Bellos was born into and the appearance of the boiling isles, I think he may believe he is in hell. Like, the first episode Luz asked out loud if she was in the "bad place," and Bellos was raised in a time when hell and the devil were considered very literal. I think he's terrifying because he is basically one of history's true monsters and he probably believes he is totally righteous in killing all the deamons and witches.

I think Caleb is the name of Philip’s brother. Because I believe Philip’s brother fell in love with with a Clawthorn since their silhouette looks stinkingly similar to a Clawthorn like Eda and her mom and their palisman are usually bird themed. And it looks like Philip’s brother, Caleb, had his own palisman and it was Flapjack. That why Flapjack suggested the name “Caleb” when he was introducing himself to Gus and Willow while uncover. Sooooo….Hunter is technically a Clawthorne?

My Theroy of the Paintings: 1: The town of Graysfield all voted to terrorize anything that didn't fit in human society/Philip and his brother Caleb imagining their bounty hunters. 2: Philip and Caleb practicing their sword fighting. 3: Caleb is a bounty mask for Philip. 4: Philip(wearing the mask) pretending to be a hunter while Caleb as a witch. 5: A witch (Eda's ancestor) appears and shows Caleb some magic. 6: Philip follows his brother to the boiling isles. 7: Few months later, Philip sees his brother with the witch that took him (Now pregnant). 8,9,And 10: Philip was planning attack the witch and take his brother home but Caleb is blessed to see Philip and tells him that he married the witch and were expecting the first hybrid child. 11: The two brothers fight. 12: Philip kills his brother just because he turned his back on everything humanity stood for. 13: Seeing the love of her life dead, the witch takes revenge on Philip. 14: Philip makes a bargain with two witches, he'll trade his journal for powerful spells. 15: Philip combines glyph magic in his blood. 16: Unfortunately the glyphs backfired and now he's cursed/sucking life out of palismen to survive. 17: Philip decides to take on a new identity (Emperor Belos). 18: regretting what he did to his brother, Belos kept reincarnating grimwalkers to resemble him as the golden guard thus hunter was born.

So much in this episode!! Please do a dive into The Collector who def gives "Bill" vibes. Interesting that the Collector created the curse that finds it's way to Eda. Makes sense to get ride or hinder a powerful witch like Eda, and Lilith, especially if they are also connected / related to Belos/Phillip. The Collector comes across as Chaos or a trickster that needs the power from the day of unity to expand his/her reach maybe into other worlds / dimensions. Also, funny that Belos has only been the Emperor for 50 years?!? So when he and his brother entered this realm, did they time travel into a distant future? Also, why did Belos refer Luz to Luzura? Does he know the author of the books or familiar with there history? Also, liked the picture of the earlier portal door. So much to look forward to.!!!!

The original witch trials actually were in Connecticut, where Luz, Philip and Caleb are from, the Hartford witch trials, and they took place in 1647-1663, around thirty years before the Salem witch trials, so Philip wasn't just in the mindset before it happened, he was there during them, the two were playing and being raised on it. Caleb was just able to learn and grow, while Philip was stuck in the ways that were taught to him. I think that Caleb carved the original door portal, allowing them to move between worlds, allowing them to both be at the Isles as kids, but still have grown statues and drawings of them back in the human realm. That's likely why Philip doesn't know how to actually build the portal, he knows vaguely but never had to really do it by himself, and why the portal was found by Eda on Clawthorne property. If the witch Caleb had a kid with was an early Clawthorne, of course she would either have the portal from where they were likely living together / spending a lot of time together before he was murdered, or why she would take it with her to prevent Philip from getting his hands on it. Could be why the Clawthornes are known for their carving skills, she may have noted she skills in it, and decided to teach it to their kid once it was born.

Hunter and the other grimwalkers are most likely copies of his brother. Below was digested with his brother's love of magic. When they were young, they were very close. "Caleb" was phillip's older brother, as he was taller in the potraits, so phillip probably looked up to him. His brother was the one who made him his mask, and they did everything together, they probably aspired to be witch hunters together. Phillip would come to see "caleb" casting away his prejudice, loving magic, abandoning their dream, marrying a witch and airing a child with her as a betrayal. In the fight of the flames, you can see phillip is welding a murder weapon while "caleb" just has a simple wood carving knife for defense, also his brother has a look on his face that says he doesn't want to fight phillip, so I think he was overall a goody good boy while phillip is evil. Phillip wishes to have his brother back, a brother who won't betray him, who hates magic like him. Yet to get that, he makes the grimwalkers younger and younger, as memory golden guards had deeper voices than hunter, this way they're easier to control. He basically abused Hunter into becoming what he wanted. Yet he never gets what he wanted, because his brother was so good that the grim walkers cannot be evil like he is. (Also, I think that hunter had a childhood. Mainly because hunter doesn't know he is abused, and that sort of trauma takes years to build. He also said he didn't think he'd have a future until belos found him. He might have been left in some backwater place until belos came for him.)

Hunter is a Grimwalker clone of a human and, like a human, has no inherit magical abilities. So, it might be cool if he learned how to use glyph magic from Luz. That way, they can both be on par with everyone else after Luz carves her palisman.
