In this episode Colin travels to Los Angeles to do a couple of podcasts with fellow below deck cast members, and also pick up a bunch of spare parts for the boat, as shipping to Costa Rica is ridiculously expensive. When back on the boat, the crew go through a pretty comprehensive oil change procedure for your viewing pleasure!

SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

The work Colin does as an engineer both here and on below deck should really inspire young, or any, people to get into engineering. My Dad wanted to be an engineer, but his father made him do something else. He tested off the charts aptitude wise for engineering. He was always making, fixing, building and inventing. I watched him a lot and it's like he is there when I do the same. Chef Marcos, adored him, such a genuine person and talent. As to all the deeply invested personal comments about others in the show, unless you are one of them, or involved personally, how can you know seriously!? As Colin says, it's not what you did that will bother you in 20yrs time, it's what you didn't do. And some of it you just plain chalk up to experience! So go and do some living yourselves! Thx for the inspo Colin, off to change some oil, the right way!

You have a nice large solar panel array and plenty of amp hours in reserve.. plus you can always run the engines and charge the battery bank if you have extended periods of bad weather.... have to love seeing a full charge by noon on a cloudy day! Induction vs propane? propane has a lot of downsides.... 1) running out when you are in the middle of cooking dinner. 2) remote anchor/not able to find 3) pray you have the right adapter (region dependent) to fill your tanks. 4 )flammable gas system that can develop leaks. No real downsides to induction other than having to possibly buy some new pots and pans and wiring in an isolator/surge protector in case of lightening storms. The pros are 1) you can cook more efficiently with it and 2) it's not propane 🙂 Cheers!!!

Mate I have been using induction cooking in my home for over 10 years, it draws way less electricity than any other method and you can cook eggs perfectly at 300 degrees. Make the switch and you will never regret it, the only thing is if you need to simmer anything longer that two hours it turns off automatically, so you have to watch it, it's a safety thing, enjoy the induction cooking experience...

Filter wrench. Buy at least two and stow them in the engine compartment, hanging, - where you use them. Neoprene! Good idea. Also for hand tightening, rubber bands increase your grip strength quite a bit. I used them on everything from fountain pens to large ABS fittings. (Of course they are nothing compared to a strap wrench or channel locks) On my 20 year old boat I've got two sets of Raycors. They still look brand new. So I'm wondering about the actual progression of a fuel filter problem. I can imagine this happening: I have a clogged filter, so I flip the lever to the second set of filters, they quickly clog. Then I replace all the filters in the first bank. Then they clog.... Is the crap that can get/grow in a diesel tank enough to take out a whole series of filters? Or usually when there's a clog one filter change (or flipping that lever to the second bank) takes care of it? (Who's done this a lot - that's the video I want to see.) And how do you clear out a tank full of gunk? I guess I should first just get off my ass do a filter change just as good practice. Then when I find I don't have the right filter wrench.... I can just drive over to the shop and buy one (or two), instead of waiting for all this go down someplace remote. BTW your fix it videos are top notch. Many channels do twenty minutes on 'this nut is frozen, let's try this (doesn't work) then this (also doesn't work) then in the last two minutes they magically are done with the job briefly mentioning how they solved the problem...

Eye infection , most times healed with colloidal silver. the moment you or the dogs have anything going on just wash out with colloidal silver water. Simple to take anywhere... 2 thin silver rods 4/5 inches long can buy ebay or jewellery shop. Just bend ends to fit over glass. conect 9 v battery with 9v Battery Snap Connector to Dual Alligator Clips . dont touch rods together just place in glass of water for 2/ 3 minutes. you will see silver coming off rods is few seconds. Can use for ear infection etc. Hope this helps ...

Here in CA Propane runs close to 10 dollars a gallon, no idea what you guys are paying, but I fill 6x5=30 gallons per season and the cost for me runs $50.00 per container of Propane ($300.00 Total) and that total is for the year since propane use is based on how often we use the Grill and have company all season for we also have area heaters. I live close to LA so cold is not a common event outside of 3 months of the year.

Been using the same induction eye for 5 years now and it held up quite well. You need more solar panels and more lipos , you have the space, it’s a game changer. If I was doing a large boat, I would seriously consider a turbine driven electric generator, it can burn some shitty fuels and be ok.

Hey Colin, the best investment you will ever make in the longevity of your engines / gensets is setting up a bypass filter that filters down to 1 or 2 micron. These types of filters can also be used for diesel fuel as well. This is not new technology but VERY effective at removing all contaminants down to 1or 2x micron. There are many marine, transport & rail engines operators who swear by these bypass filters for the cost savings + the benefits from having super clean oil lubricating your diesel engines.
