These young men found outlets for their energy. You'd think marching and combat would Wear them down. 😊

Very interesting, Ron. Excellent research behind the scrawlings. As my wife and I have moved east to Southern DE, she is being very patient with me wanting to go to these historic CIvil War sites. We headed down to North Florida for THanksgiving. After leaving my cousin's home in beautiful Charlotteville, VA, we drove up towards Washington. As we drove through the Wilderess and Chancellorsville, I was on fire and could not stop to visit due to our return to Lewes, DE, but I will return to spend more time.

Thank you for sharing! I noticed that a number of the inscriptions resemble the style of lettering seen in books. They took extra care in leaving their mark. Also, it does seem that some of the inscriptions were scratched over; I wonder if someone was expressing their discontent of the Yankees

Ah yes, James Shields. He challenged Abe Lincoln to a duel back in Illinois. It's a great story, considering that it very nearly happened. I did some lightweight research into Lincoln's feelings toward Shields in 1862, roughly 20 years after the aborted duel. Well, despite the fact that Shields remained an unrepentant Democrat, Lincoln offered him the command of the Army of the Potomac. Shortly after the first Battle of Kernstown. The even more hard-core Radical Republican Congress would have no part of Shields assuming such a command. But I came away thinking: Yes, Abe buried the broadsword alright. Google: Lincoln Shields duel

I would suggest to you sir that a little known topic for consideration is what is known as the Confederate Rest burial grounds in a Madison, wi cemetery where lay 144 Confederate soldiers captured at island nr. 10 by Grant in the spring of 1862. I stop there often when in Madison.

Sometimes I wish l still lived on the east coast so l could visit more of these sites. I've only been to Luray Caverns, probably the most touristy cavern in the Blue Ridge. No Civil War grafitti there. .

Thanks bro'. However, more interested in the Southerners. Not the invaders. Regardless, thank you.
