I like your ideas. Efficient and practical. Make wearing the great kilt even that much more practical! Good kilt vid.

Thanks for doing this video. Yours is the only one I could find where it shows a great kilt having belt loops sewn on. When I get me one I'm going to do this for camping purposes.

Thanks for the video. I've been considering adding loops to my kilt to make camping easier. Have you tired internal drawstrings? Was wondering if those would be worth the effort: sew in yoke, thread in two opposing drawstrings that pull like a curtain, "set" the strings.
@jhohlkennedy

You are very welcome, I am pleased that it is useful. I have not tried a drawstring but we willing to give it a go. If you do it, I would love to see the finished product. 👍🏽

Internal drawstring is a bit beyond my sewing and drapery ability atm. Will try the belt loops first.

I have some fabric for an earasaid and I was wondering if one could use a draw string through a binding tape on the inside? Would you have any thoughts on that?
@jhohlkennedy
@jhohlkennedy 10 ай бұрын
Hello, I do have thoughts and they are based on what I’ve done here in this video. What I have done in the video works, but in the end is no more rapid than me, folding it on the bed. Having a drawstring would help if I did not have a surface on which to lay the plaid.

I am going to try and make beltloops with #5 pearl cotton. This way they won't be seen as readily I hope.@@jhohlkennedy

Good luck! When I sewed mine into the plaid, I had very little sewing skill and the result is obvious. :) @@LadyToni7777

Have you pleated a feileadh mòr and stitched the pleats in place before

Pardon me, I meant to add to my last comment. For me, having the pleats permanently stitched-in defeats the purpose of having it as a blanket. Pleating it only takes me 1-2 minutes anyway.

I wear the belted plaid/great kilt as you see here but mostly I wear traditional kilts: 4-yard-box pleated, low- and high-yardage knife pleated.

The colors are too vivid for great kilts. If any tartan at all, the colors should be organic, I.e. plant-based. The belt loops seem intrusive.

I'm not sure how many of my videos you've seen yet. There's a couple of points that I should clarify in case you've only watched this one: 1. I'm not a historian and am not a re-enactor. I am not a researcher. I'm a curious person who benefits from the research of actual researchers and also from my lived experience. ---> that's the important one! 2. The colours are fine. Indeed, the majority of "clan" tartans didn't exist when everyday folks wore the plaid. But plant-based dyes can be very vibrant and bright -- just talk with anyone who works with plant-based dyes. Further, there's documentation from the 16th-17th century that clearly states that the plaids were made of vibrant colours AND other plaids were far more muted -- maybe solid colour, in fact. 3. The belt loops aren't intrusive. You may not like them (and that's fine) but this video wasn't made to satisfy a viewer's desires: it was made to show how I -- clumsily -- stitched-in belt loops into a polyviscose plaid. I doubt that folks used to lay their plaids out on the bed, ground, floor, etc. and hand-pleat them every time they wore them. Researchers (not I, since I only benefit from the work of proper researchers) suspect that there could've been some other *thing* going on: belt-loops/keepers, drawstrings, whatever that would have helped (a) keep the plaid in place whilst wearing and (b) aided in the donning of said garment. Regards.

I'm not sure what you're after with your comment -- it doesn't offer anything at all. I am not a historic re-enactor, am not a historian, and do not play on on TV. I'm curious about the garment and usually try to incorporate it into modern wear. I am very interested in the history and historic use of the garment which is why I sewed-in belt loops per the suggestion of others who ARE more knowledgeable about history, to give them a try. My goal was NOT to be historically accurate but simply to try the experiment. I was not trying to be in a fashion contest.
