Looks like I'm a bit late to this fest, but it's still May 1 here in the States. We danced the Maypole when I was a child in school. Thank you so much for posting this! Happy Beltaine 2012! :-)

Watching this, not only the dance itself but everyone else - the band, the girl sitting on the ground, and so on - I feel something familiar; something that touches my Pagan soul. I've only participated in the Maypole dance once, and it was not very good as it was not a pole but a ribbon at a local public circle. It was fun and chaotic, but this is magical.

DID they do the book of names and knot tying ceremonies too? the old promenade? 13 year olds could pledge to one another and 16 year olds could marry. was the old tradition wasn't it I can't remember? has it changed since reformationism?

I kind of getting it now. Since they are adults they have to cover almost all of the pole with the strings in representation of their life so much. And when little kids dance around the Maypole they only cover 1/9 of it. Interesting.

Araveen Beauchamp im late but red and white! red to represent the menstrual blood of women and white is the semen of men. Some covens have gone to rainbow ribbons for their lgbt+ members.

@@itsamandamydude3788 Errrmm..you do realise that dancing around a maypole with ribbons is a late Victorian creation, don't you?

I have some kind of horrific memory from practicing the maypole dance from when I was about 6. I get filled with terror just watching this or thinking about maypoles.. I think I need some regression hypnosis to figure out what it is. I must have blocked it from my memories, or Im remembering something from a former life.

Because we're honoring our ancestors, the time paganism was at its peak and it looks cool
