@olgapristin77399 жыл бұрын
Sean Ó Briain Staff is trying their very best to give these animals the best care. But the truth is...they are not suitable to captivity, they develop all sorts of stress related health issues, and their lifespan is much shorter than in the wild. Out of 11 belugas that used to live in Mystic, only three are still living. And the common misconception is that some of them were rescued. No, all but one ( bred in captivity ) were "collected from the wild" meaning brutally captured for entertainment purposes. So you are right not being a big fan of aquariums :(
@AnGhaeilge9 жыл бұрын
+Olga Pristin I agree with you Olga.
@olgapristin77399 жыл бұрын
+Stefanie Elia Before you tell anyone to know the facts and do the research, maybe not the worst idea to do your own? The mere statement that belugas in captivity reproduce really well tells me that you haven't done it yet. This is a fact that even captivity industry admits, the population of captive belugas in the US keeps declining despite every effort made to breed them and make sure calves survive. I would like to see the reliable source of information about 20% mortality rate in wild beluga calves, really curious to see who published this data. Now you compare AVERAGE to MAXIMUM, well you cannot do that. You EITHER compare average to average, or maximum to maximum. Now, based on tooth ring analysis belugas in the wild can live up to MAXIMUM of 50-60 year( 60-70 according to NOAA Fisheries ), oldest captive beluga known lived up to 46. It's hard to estimate the AVERAGE for the wild populations but top marine researchers put this number around at least 20+ ( NOAA Fisheries put it at 30-50 years for wild belugas wild span). Let's look at Mystic belugas. Since 1975 Mystic Aquarium has housed 11 Beluga whales. Three whales are still living, and eight have died in captivity at the aquarium. Three whales have died under the age of three, four between the ages of 8 and 15, and only 1 lived 29 years. Overall, that's a staggering mortality rate of 73% and you can calculate the average. You asked where the facts are from? These are from the Ceta Base, the most reliable database of captive cetaceans in the world. Regarding helping wild population, please tell me how holding less than 40 whales in captivity helps wild population ( which are not endangered by the way )? NO RESEARCH done in Mystic helps wild population to survive. Yes, I have seen wild belugas ( no scars on the ones I saw ), yes I talked to many cetaceans researchers, yes I read Mystic and other aquariums research papers, yes I talked to their stuff, I have the e-mail conversation with Mystic representatives about research they do, and even according to them ALL valuable research is done on wild populations in Alaska where they go every summer. There is no educational or scientific value in keeping this animals in tanks, even putting ethical aspect aside.Sorry to be so closed minded for your taste.

@olgapristin77397 жыл бұрын
That's true. Why then move them from facility to facility in attempts to breed more captive whales? Do you have any idea how stressful these transfers are for both the animals that are being shipped across the country and the ones they are leaving behind? Why try to bring in more wild caught whales thus encouraging more and more captures ( I hope I don't need to explain what I mean by that - assuming you are aware of collaborative effort of SW, Shedd, GA and Mystic to import 18 wild caught beluga whales from depleted Amur Sakhalin population )? How is it different from SW? They "share" whales with SW, they join them in supporting wild captures...so how different???
@shreyasacharya76997 жыл бұрын
i think what they should do is take care of these ones to the best of their ability. seaworld is actually pretty cool for care (not their aquariums , but they actually do fund a lot of animal rescuing projects) but what they did and still continue to do to their whales and stuff is really cruel. but I'm not against aquaculture at all. they are extremely sustainable and they're suited to aquarium life.
@Norda817 жыл бұрын
What they did and still do? Since when is providing good care cruel?
@trystansanders89387 жыл бұрын
They're pelagic Arctic whales adapted to swimming over 50 km a day...not swim in a small tank in temperate climates in circles which is bad for their back and tail fins. I could lock you in a room for your whole life and provide you with all the food you want and free dental/medical care but it doesn't mean you'll be living a happy and fulfilling life. I understand that zoos and aquariums are needed for conservation and educational reasons. Believe me, I work in an aquarium.... But cetaceans are not suited to living in confined spaces, they sometimes travel over 100 kilometers a day in pods containing 100s of individuals, you can't replicate that in this tiny tank

If there were more people like you around, the world would be a better place to live. I completely agree with you about animals being kept in aquariums, in the right conditions. It would be great if they could all live in the wild without the need for captivity, but people as a whole are stupid and careless and these places help to educate the next generation about these wonderful animals. I would not feel under achieving at all, if I was to be offered a job working in a aquarium with good morale standing upon graduating. Another fantastic segment as per usual Jonathan and I hope to meet you one day in the future, maybe when I embark on my first dives! Thanks again! David

THAT WAS SO CUTE I LOVE WHEN HE KISSED YOU AND SPLASHED YOU!!!

that's the Beluga experience its a extra cost event but well worth it :) though you might get sprayed by Juno down in the viewing area (where they were cleaning at the beginning of the video) if you turn your back to him and he starts feeling ignored He'll soak you till you turn around. I demonstrated this last year with a group of kids on a summer group field trip and he cooled us all down from the heat of the day ;) He's a good boy

You can also do that its called the Beluga whale experience and I believe its around $75-$80 a person. Other experience's include spending time with African penguins and being a guest star at the sea lion show. If you don't have the $$ for one of those experience's you can feed a friendly stingray lunch for $5 or in late summer go to the bird exhibit which I believe was $10 per person (past 2 years in Aug no time limit on how long a person can stay in the exhibit 11am-6pm when aquarium closes)

I have been watching Beluga videos for some time now & have LOVED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! Though I must say, my only qualm is, I don’t like having them in captivity! They’re WONDERFUL CREATURES & deserve the open Oceans! Gorgeous inquisitive creatures! If we don’t become aware of taking our broken fishing tackle & rubbish home with us, our grandchildren won’t get to see many of many of the Oceanic creatures that live in the vast waters!!! Thanks for sharing! ❤❤❤

I used to watch your videos a bunch of times when I was young, and still LOVE watching them! My favorites are the Aquarius, Feeding the Bull Sharks, and of course this one! The Beluga Whales are just so cute! Anyway, thank you for existing and making these amazing videos on your channel!
