Sb19's part on "kapangyarihan" was written by Pablo just on the day of the recording and it took him only minutes to finish the rap parts.. josh added that it only took them 1-2hrs to write & record their part yet they still managed to come up with such powerful message. Additionally, one of the B&B members said that one of her observations was that she didn't see any struggles with how Pablo distributed the lines per member.. Like he already knows whose lines belongs to who. As if Pablo already has the member in mind during the writing process.

Politics in the Philippines is quite a divisive topic to talk about even within the same households but if you want to understand more about the Filipinos a look into our history is going to be quite interesting. It's very colorful. If you don't know where to start begin with pre colonial and then work your way up if you have time. I can see in your personality that you will love the journey

True, even people in the same households do argue about their political views, and that include our household. When it comes to politics, we all go into heated arguments and end up angry to one another as no one would admit defeat, so as much as possible, we no longer want to talk about that at home. Fortunately, last election, we all voted the same candidate, but there are times that I'm trying to be objective and kind of trying to see the good sides of the other candidate, then end up being harshly scolded by my father.

This song is very empowering for the masses and in terms of message, it’s in the same league as Josh and Pablo’s “Sino ka ba” as well as Gloc 9’s “Upuan.” Thanks for the rv Hurraira 🫶

Ben & Ben was addressing the incident that took place in 2022 when a policeman who got into a heated argument with a woman (some said it was a guy) shot her and her mother out of anger. Ben & Ben is questioning why a person who swore to protect the people would do such a thing. People who were appointed/elected to the position of power have the tendency to abuse that power forgetting their duty to the people who elected/appointed them. That's why at the end, you will hear the police siren. Also, this mv was release during election time. During election, people's right forefinger is marked with an indelible ink to show that they've already voted. Here, Ben & Ben marked the forefinger with the colors of the Philippine flag, to remind people to choose carefully the politicians they will be voting for these politicians will run the country.

Though this was a specific time the message may be applied to any representative kind of government. The power in those kinds of government lies in the ballot box and the people in government are not to lord it over their constituents but to serve for the greater good of those who placed them in their positions. The finger with the colors of the flag is typically the finger that gets dyed after the person has voted in the Philippines. I guess it can symbolize a reminder to vote with the future of the Philippines in mind. The song also hearkens back to the truth that The People ultimately holds the power and that government is to serve the people.

The only reason why there was a disclaimer is because SB19, being still under that K management that time, couldn't speak/voice their support for any political sides, even if they want to. But I truly believe they share the same heart and sentiment with Ben n Ben, and they were so obvious offcam and individually who they support. I love them more for this.

Yes the words in Tagalog are a thousand times more impactful and heavier. “Ibon mang may layang lumipad” is a line from the song “Bayan Ko” (my homeland) used as one of the anthems in a peaceful revolution that fought for the country’s democracy back in the 80’s. The song was originally a poem written way before then in Spanish by a Filipino revolutionary general which was made into a Tagalog song not long after, in the time the Philippines was fighting against colonisers I think in the late 1890s. They referenced it in that bit where you picked up on a feeling again instinctively. Watched this a while back and bawled. Now rewatching with you, just the first few words made me tear up. And the bit in the end just made me burst into tears. Thanks for this. You get it, you just get it.

This was such a powerful (no pun intended) song and MV. I'm sure you'll get lots of info of the background of this song. It made me cry when I first saw it many moons ago. The struggle was so real. Pablo was tasked to write SB19's lyrics while hanging out with B&B and wrote them very quickly so as not to miss out on spending time with his idols. I love that man and of course SB19!

It was about a specific police brutality that happened that time and Ben&Ben made it clear. However, political aficionados associate it with politics coz this was around election time. Actually, a lot have unstanned SB19 during this time coz they won't reveal their political biases. But as fans, we understand that they are bound by endorsement contracts (which are A LOT) and even their staff tweeted that they are not allowed to speak about it (otherwise they would be sued for breach of contract). They actually performed this just one time in an online concert of Ben & Ben and I'm telling you, Stell never looked hotter in any performance in my eyes. Much as I love this song and performance, I'm still salty to this day that Stell didn't have a single close up shot at all. Like the videographer totally forgot about him. Seems like he has a terrible luck in Ben & Ben collabs coz even in the Watson's MAPA performance, Stell was relegated to just the doing the adlibs. I don't remember him getting a proper line that time. Oh well! Btw, this collab was their first but they released MAPA first.

Thank you Hurraira for reacting to this! I was the one who tagged you on twitter about this song. I just woke up so I'm late in commenting but I see people have already explained in the comments that it was written about a specific case about police brutality that happened. In the previous administration, the police abuses were rampant because of our then president's drug war. But as you can see in the video, they tied it to the time we were under martial law. As you know, that admin was ousted in 1986 with People Power. So releasing this was timely because the son of the former pres. during martial law and the daughter of the previous pres. were running mates in 2022. Unfortunately, they won the election to my heartbreak. But I will always be thankful for "SBen19" for this song. They may not have endorsed any candidate but the statements made through this song rings true whatever "side" or "color" you are. Those we elect to power must serve the people.

Oh I’ve waited for this. I knew about B&B long before SB19. While I liked them in a general sense, I haven’t been a fan of Filipino music for some time, that is, until our guys. My appreciation for B&B came around the last elections due to their campaign efforts. In any case, this song is generally aimed at politicians. Over here, they act and expect to be treated more like rulers, or kings as one of Josh’s lines states, rather than public servants. And while as a few have mentioned, this has been going on since forever, some parts were specific to more recent times. This was represented in the video and not in any particular set of lyrics. The people holding pictureless frames for example, represent the families of what they call EJK (extra judicial killings) during the past administration’s “drug war.” After Stell’s line, Paolo or Miguel (I’m sorry, I can’t tell the twins apart) sings a line containing the words “Ibon na malayang lumipad” (the bird that flies free) is a reference to a kundiman (traditional love song) turned protest song particularly popular with Martial Law activists. So, yeah, the song has immense breadth and depth. And our boys’ participation I truly appreciate because I’m sure they, too, had different political views among them but they got together with B&B anyway and risked the ire of their fans if only to remind everyone to exercise their right to vote-the upraised index finger showing the colours of our flag instead of the colours of a political party or candidate. As always, thank you Hurraira.

The moment ben&ben started the song, I already got goosebumps and it intensifies when SB19 came in with their rap verses, then Stell followed back to ben&ben, in short, I got goosebumps all throughout the song. Indeed a very powerful song. I'm not sure about the specific issue it was addressed to when it was first released because I'm not yet a fan of SB19 during that time but based on what I read, it was about police brutality that maybe I am familiar with because during that time, it's kinda rampant. Then, fast forward to the release of this performance video, it was during the presidential election campaign period and Ben&ben is supporting or endorsing a candidate(which I supported too but lost), this release is actually so timely too as it reminds us, voters to be smart on who to vote but since ben&ben is endorsing a candidate, this song got a little bit controversial as even fans have opposing political views, and despite the disclaimers put in the video, SB19 still got some negative reactions from some casuals and even from some fans. It's saddening to witness all that, lot of people unfollowed their celebrity idols when they found out they support the opposing team they support. Honestly, I don't want to relive those moments, people are divided by politics and even some families and friends fought over it.

hmmmm.... generally political in nature, most would say the Philippines, since the beginning of colonialization up to present when the country has been long in democracy, still is being governed by corrupt leaders who when campaigning for elections promise a lot to their constituents yet after winning, just empty promises. I love the message of this though, bold, especially these days when the general public seems to have resigned and is going with the flow. Rarely these days that you would hear songwriters do songs/lyrics of these stuff, not because of suppression but as mentioned, due to resignation and exhaustion to fight off scumbags in power

Depending on how one wants to use the word "Kapangyarihan", it can mean either "power" or "authority When the English CC was saying "You should serve the people" it should've said " You should be serving the people" Idk how voting is done in UK, but in some countries like Philippines, a fingerprint is needed for the ballot/registration paper. I appreciate SB19's decision to not be involved in any politcal color, since politics in the country is highly polarized. And hoped to stay that way this coming election. They worked hard uniting the people with their music only to divided by politics? No. I don't agree with that. To small-minded people out there, please refrain relating politics to everything. I can't imagine back then how people say "deserved" to families or friends that are broken because of politics. We prayed for the best leader, God gave us an answer. Let's hope for our country the best. Do whatever we can to help. Pray.

omg yesssss!! speak on it! don't base your politics on your fave celebs opinions!!! study the governmental structures and the politicians on those positions; evaluate their performances; listen to their promises; AND really think how those promises could be possibly put into action. if you start diving into our modern history, you'll notice that a lot of politicians share surnames -- that's because even though we don't have a monarchy, we never left feudalism. we have political dynasties that span multiple decades. a few good and even excellent politicians came from these dynasties; but they also gave birth to some REALLY SHITTY ONES. think of game of thrones -- it's very much marriage alliances, private armies, murdered enemies.. again, some truly excellent leaders were from these dynasties. unfortunately, a lot of filipinos rely on name recall/recognition when it comes to politics; and don't truly know what a congressman does differently from a governor (for example). anyway, sorry for the long comment. lol did you notice i didn't put in any name -- i had to be careful, because the 2022 national elections were a hot mess. we're even messier. 2025 will be our local and senatorial elections (there are 24 senators and they serve for six years; 12 senators who were elected in 2016 are stepping down, and going to be replaced by the newly elected ones next year; then the senators elected in 2022 are going to step down on 2028, and so on). hopefully, next years results are better; but the early survey results don't look good.

And, as artists many are looking at sb19 to share their thoughts on who to elect but as they are working with the government they are not allowed to endorse anyone. That's why there's a disclaimer there. And the lines about the free bird that refuses to be caged is a reference to an older song.. that song and this song is kinda related.. the person running then was the son of the person to whom the older song was written in relation. It is all about the politicians that the people elected to serve them. But once the were elected and seated on their positions, they acted as if they are the Lords that people will serve. Politjcians should not think that the “power” are not in their hands. It is a “political song!” The last time singers wrote songs like this was 5 decades ago and now history seems to repeat itself! Philippine government is a mess and there's a lot of corruption going on (for the longest time) and the people who has the power to make a change are not doing what they're supposed to do. A lot of Filipinos are blinded by this and most would prefer to stay apolitical or be biased without actually digging into the societal issues that are going on. To be politically opinionated in the Philippines is to be a misfit. To make a political stance in the Philippines is always going to be controversial. To make political music and art is to gain attention. But that is music and art all about, it's always been political and controversial. Glad that the new generation is starting to make a change and are being more vocal. As the lyrics says "We are not slaves anymore"

Kapangyarihan is a song written to criticize the police and their power tripping. It all started when a policeman abused his authority and shot his neighbors dead because of real estate conflict. The victims were totally unarmed and the policeman bragged his position as a police and used his government licensed gun to kill a mother and her son. It was all caught in a video that went viral on facebook. It was clearly powertripping, he was bragging that he is untouchable. It was so shocking how he committed murder in broad daylight, with so many witnesses and even so brazenly escaped. If the video didn't go viral, people doubt if that policeman will even be punished for his crime. Because of the demand from public sentiment, the congress and senate did punish that policeman. Later, this song was like dedicated again to the police by Ben & Ben because of the government's "War on Drugs" where they called out the police for doing "extra-judicial killings" on drug addicts and drug pusher suspects. It made an uproar. The "War on Drugs" is a very complicated topic where there's a lot of point to consoder. When Ben & Ben released this collab, the purpose is for them to encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote as it was the time for Presidential Elections. Thus the painted point finger in the end with the colors of the Philippine flag. The disclaimer about SB19 is also important because Ben & Ben at that time is actively supporting and endorsing a presidential candidate so they needed to clarify that SB19 remains neutral politically. I personally don't agree with Ben & Ben's political views and their personal candidate but I still like them as musicians. I also think this song is powerful and impactful. Their lyrics and messaging is always on point so I also enjoyed it. ❤

I guess the reason why they place the disclaimer is because during that time before election, a lot of A'tin left the fandom. The reason is because they wanted SB19 to release or announce who are they supporting that time. As much as the boys wanted to speak up, they know it would be a big risk since they are brand ambassadors and some of them are pro & some are anti gov't.

Also, some fans thought they're endorsing the same candidate with ben&ben despite having disclaimers. Honestly, that time, I secretly wish them not to endorse anyone because I know that would create much larger issue inside and outside the fandom. For me, I don't care who they endorse but I care for them.

@@joshcullenmyheart_sb19I think it's unfortunate that as a society we're often told to not talk about sensitive topics like politics and religion. I think we should be encouraged to have productive and respectful discussions instead. I don't think it's wrong to stand for your values and beliefs but I totally get why it's tricky for SB19 to endorse a political candidate. When I see neutrality I can't help but think of that one line from Hamilton that says "if you stand for nothing, what will you fall for for?" 🤷🏻‍♂️

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong. So Kapangyarihan came out before this collab. BEN&BEN released an album with just collaborations, and they invited SB19 to add the rap parts of the song. After that, they did the collab for MAPA, it just happens that MAPA collab first. :) hope that explains it :) Btw, love that you're digging through older stuff!
