Paul was a very emotionally vulnerable and dependent character, who needs constant outer recognition. It makes him incredibly bipolar - swinging from one emotion to another in a matter of seconds. Ben Daniels is amazing at that instant emotional change, which made him phenomenal in the role. Frankly, when you watch it, it makes you want to send Paul to a good psychologist one minute and hit him upside the head the next XD
