I'm Press. Not at national or international level, but Press nonetheless. I despise Liz - truly - but the fact is, her resurgence is relevant and worth reporting on, if only to raise the alarm about someone nuttier than a KP factory busying herself trying to get in with largely but not only American Far Right extremists, which will have a knock-on impact of giving her political cachet with the kind of ageing white English voters who like the Tories' overt cruelty and corruption, but are a bit perturbed by how Brown some of the party's top brass are. Enter Liz, a resurgent great white hope for such voters, ready to say any empty, trite, airheaded thing that will curry favour with the Tory base, and sweep her back into some kind of prominent position again. That's why she's worth covering and reporting on - out of duty, and to raise the alarm, not just sit placidly by and do Nothing about her incremental inching and worming her way back into power over millions of people.

The issue lies in what James O'Brien describes quite brilliantly in his latest book. The strange symbiotic ecosystem we seem to have developed which enables politicians to lie and promote themselves as arbiters of truth. We need journalists to adhere to stricter principles of journalist rigor and hold these people to account. It is right that we stop cancelling people unless they promote hate and give hate speeches, but we shouldn't give people like Truss an hour of self promotion without challenging her substantively.
@NeilLewis778 ай бұрын
It's ok, no one gets cancelled. Ricky gervais literally went on stage during one of his recorded Netflix specials and said horrible uniformed nasty things about trans people. When told that his comments were nasty and uninformed, he didn't learn and say sorry. He just lashed out and told the trans community that he knows more about the trans community than they do. He's not been cancelled for this behavior. He still has TV shows, movies, stand up shows and Netflix specials in the works. People in the dark Ages or Middle Ages were not as unenlightened as they are famed to be. I am a medievalist, and I have read a lot of medieval texts. Lying, pulling the wool over people's eyes has happened through the ages, most specifically when somebody was attempting to be or being a dictator.

@@autoclearanceuk7191 Ok, for example (even further back in time than the Middle Ages). Solon, one of th Greek Tyrants, was having a shave when a little accident happened and his barber hurt him a bit. said barber was apologising profusely, Solon jumped up and ran through Athens to claim somebody had just tried to assassinate him because he was feared by the bad people. He got elected. Fake news...Then: If you read feench Fabliaux, you will find of sorts of satyre againstt a greedy church, or women getting their own back on bad husbands. read the Canterbury tales, Of course the setting of the stories is medieval, but a lot of the way the characters think is very close to us. It is a little difficult to do what would be a whole course in a KZbin post. And then: Nero was accused of playing the lyra while Rome burnt: not true, but he was hated, and the senate wanted him ou (he was a populist and their privileges were at risk), so they spread a lot of rumours about him, which did result in is assassination. During the Middle Ages, several European dynasties lied about descending from saints etc. The catholic church was selling "indulgences". A nice little book to read. The characters are animals, but the stories are all about human gullibillity: Le roman de renard.

The other parties are far from perfect, but for anyone who cares about the future of our nation, democracy, and the progress of our globally interdependent humanity, use your vote wisely, and vote strategically to prevent and/or get rid of any tory candidate - that is the priority for the sake of us all and our shared future.

100% agree with him, there's a difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. I do however think some comedians fail to look at the impact of their jokes on actual people, because its not always about people being "offended", oftentimes humour that skirts the line of decency does so by relying on negative stereotypes, and sometimes even harmful untruths. When a comedian makes a joke thay also spreads those untruths to theor audience, they have a potential of fueling hatred and spreading messages used to harm people. That's generally why the subjects of those jokes get upset, not becauae theyre offended but because they're seeing the spread of falsehoods that make them actually unsafe.

Ben Elton, I could kiss you for saying- in a straight forward, no holding back fashion -what you think of Ms Truss and I wholeheartedly share your view. Phew, such a pleasure listening to you and Andrew Marr as well.

Its called 'hypernormalisation' . Adam Curtis coined it quite some time ago now in a doc he made.
