'Anyone not playing just make it up.' -talented Ben Folds

I used to be a percussionist and I love how much freedom we’re always given. No matter the genre and situation it’s always just “make something up”

@@markosbeebe6996 especially if you play kit in orchestra settings. Everyone else has very specific dynamics marked out and percussion has “Fill---“

I had 10 years of piano lessons before I started playing in various bands and I can look back on a career making a good second income on nights and weekends pretty much whenever I wanted to. I just wanted to say that given my experience, Ben makes the assignment of parts to the various sections of the orchestra understandable and straightforward. Those who are fearful to start writing for orchestra will probably find this primer heartening when they stumble onto it. Bravo.

Haha, I played piano for...12 years? & couldn't play a note now. I just don't have the ear for music these people do. It's definitely a good skill for anyone to learn, but don't go into it expecting lessons alone will result in musical genius.

my band teacher always said, professionals know what they're comfortable with and won't go outside of those boundaries, highschool and college band students don't have boundaries so will do whatever the hell you tell them to and absolutely send it.

It's a pity this is not done more often. The playful creation of a piece out of thin air, with an orchestra. Often though, orchestra players are so set in their ways of being presented with sheet music, that they don't even see the point. They miss out on the endless playground that is improvisation.
@dsmurn3076 Жыл бұрын
I think jazz is a good teacher of the power of improvisation. Fun to see it here.
