Hearing people talk about the proper context to view movies in (dark room with a well-sized screen and good sound vs a phone or a laptop) reminds me of the term "musicking," which is describes the context in which you're intended to experience a piece of music. You can listen to orchestral music on headphones on the bus and have a good time, but its most properly musicked when in a music hall with a quiet respectful crowd (at least by modern standards, I'm pretty sure Mozart wrote in a letter how much he enjoyed hearing the crowd cheer and yell while he conducted) and how that's entierely different from how you'd musick something in a jazz club or an underground hardcore band. It also reminds me of how I've seen some theaters in India where during big blockbusters, people will cheer constantly, pop off poppers and even get on the stage in front of the screen to do the dances from the movie.

I love Ben's perspective on how he engages with and appreciates art. I find beauty or interesting ideas or something to appreciate in pretty much every film I watch, doing this brings me joy. I love to find something fantastic in "bad art". This is part of why I love Caveh Zahedi (please bring caveh zahedi on the pod Jreg, I know you follow him), his art is not commercially widely successful, many people who watch it seem to hate it, it's flawed from a technical perspective, and I usually don't think he achieves what he says he's setting out to achieve. Still, I think he ends up creating very personal, fascinating art that leaves me thinking about big ideas that he maybe didn't even mean to bring up, and I think he's kind of amazing the degree to which he creates these two extremes.

I like Ben's take on seeing value in all or most art and not getting too caught up in rating and judging everything in terms of "good" or "bad". I do have a Letterboxd where I've rated films, but of course at the end of the day it's all subjective and always being critical of whatever you're engaging with can be toxic I think. I don't really agree with the "KZbin is not for real art/cinema" take though. Sure if you want to create something popular or profitable, there are ways to optimise for that and sure there are other platforms which are perhaps better suited for art, but at the same time there is so much good art on KZbin. Joel Haver I think it both a good example of this and a big proponent of the idea that movies shouldn't just be limited to Hollywood and the theater and stuff, but that anyone can make cool movies, even if they don't have the same budget or connections or whatever. I do agree though that some things are better when experienced on certain platforms. Like watching movies in a cinema is usually a better experience for me (as long as the audience isn't too disruptive), although I think there's something to be said for watching a good film at home too.

The value or "other function" i think funko pops have is kinda like a poster, like those posters your dad used to have about back to the future, or jaws or something, it does nothing, it just takes space on a wall but if you ask your dad it means something to him, maybe when he looks at it it takes him back to when he saw that movie for the first time and makes him smile, idk, maybe they just exist to express love for a piece of media that connected with you. I'm looking at it in a super deep level lol but idk, they're not my favorite medium to do that but maybe that's their appeal

At 56:00 Brogan says that adding dramatic suspense using filmmaking techniques in a KZbin video doesn't work. I don't know if that's what you mean, but look at Broey Deschanel's last video (When Movies are a Religious Journey, edited by Ben). The greyscale shots with Maia are a great counterexample I think.

criticizing the placement of truth over good for me connects to richard rorty's rejection of mind & thought as akin to some mirror representation of the body & world. as far as i can tell western philosophy is the child of religion and science, who share custody since their divorce. but like an ipad baby, the void of care opened by the parents' mutual preoccupation with politics and money respectively is pounced on by the claws of the machine.

I certainly appreciate the danger of being enmeshed in something someone else owns. But being invested in a good story is so meaningful that I'd consider that danger simply an unfortunate side-effect. EDIT: You mean the live-action Barbie? That wasn't even close to having children as the target demographic.
