I am always just in awe of Hogan's swing. Ben was still a great player after his accident in 1950, but he said he was never as good. His run from 45 or 46 to 49 was incredible.

FYI, the black and white down-the-line fairway wood swing and the face-on iron swing at the beginning are from a 1946 instruction film, so are both pre-"secret" (late 1947) and pre-"accident" (early 1949). The iron shot in color is from practice at the 1956 US Open. The next black and white swing with the driver is Saturday at the 1960 US Open; Jack Nicklaus was his playing partner that day, and is seated in a chair directly to Hogan's left in the background. The next clip of the big driver swing is also from the 1946 instruction film: very much a pre-"secret" swing, when he was still occasionally bothered by wildness. The blurry down-the-line iron swing in black and white is from 1953, at the Pan-American Open in Mexico. Don't know anything about the swing filmed from behind. The last swing is from the "lesson segment" of the Shell match, where he played Sam Snead, filmed in 1964.

Hogan was not "bothered by wildness" in 1946. If he was, then everyone else who ever played the game should wish they were bothered like he was. Between 1941 & his near fatal & massive injuries in Feb. 1949 he was the greatest player the world would will ever know. During this time frame he won 48X on tour despite missing 2 1/2 years (1943-45) to WW2 military service. In fact, in 1941 he finished top two 16X & his stroke ave. was an incredible 70.5 for that technological time frame. In 1946 he won 13 times on tour, top two 20X & won the PGA, Western Open with an event record score of 271, his 3rd North&South Open & top 4 in both Masters & US Open. Then in 1948 he won 10X (only one to win 10 twice in tour history) set new stroke ave. record, won the US Open at 7000 yd Riviera with record smashing by 5 shots 276, won the PGA & Western Open which at that time was "his 4th major" because before 1960 Americans rarely played in the British Open. He rid himself of the "hook" by 1940. After WW2 he just committed more to the left to right game. BTW, he did all this without being allowed to clean the ball on the green (rule changed in 1960).

Hogan wrote and had illustration of pane of glass shift out to the right on the down swing if we read and saw the same book.

Hey Jeremy, further to our exchange on your "Shallowing the Shaft in Transition" Hogan analysis video, from 6:30 to about 7:00, in this video, concerning Hogan's transition from a cupped left wrist to a bowed left wrist, i.e. "Knuckles Down", is that a conscious move, i.e. a rolling of the wrist, or is that just a by product of his weight shifting left and the right elbow moving in front of his right hip? Thanks and cheers! MB
@jeremywellsgolf17606 жыл бұрын
In 5 Lessons, he wrote about turning his left wrist down (flexing or bowing his left wrist) as he approached impact. In his case, this was a very conscious move. As far as other players are concerned, I think it just depends. In my experience, most people who do all of these things naturally have no clue what they're up to. Some people square the face much sooner than others. Hogan seemed to like to square it a little on the later side. Anyway, us mere mortals are the ones who have to work hard to figure out how to do all of this stuff.

Needless to type, I've read that book a number of times over the years, but apparently, it's never sunk in. LOL! Thanks for the reply Jeremy and cheers! MB

It’s easy to see that this swing is a pull from the top. It makes the body rotation simple. If it was lower body driven his head would be way ahead of the ball which it is not in any of his swings. Of course his lower body goes first but this is not intentional. His lower body is getting out of the way of his fast swinging arms otherwise he would hit himself. Video especially high speed video is very deceiving. Ask yourself how can he get his arms in front of his body if he is not pulling down and just letting his lower body to get out of the way. This is where modern instruction and video have missed the boat.

At 4:51 you say lateral shift towards target and show it with red lines , is it also left hip moving away from the target line at the same time?
@jeremywellsgolf1760 Жыл бұрын
Yes as the hips begin to rotate towards target in transition, the left hip will appear to move laterally from the face-on view as it moves away from the target line. This is because the hips are more of an oval-shape than a circle.

No mention of him being left handed and how he manipulates his right wrist from extension (cupped) to flexion (flat) at impact. This is not normal for a right handed player. Great swing but unique due to being a lefty.
@shawnkirkpatrick9062 жыл бұрын
This is a reaction to his swing plane. If you start down with the butt of the club pointing outside the ball you will have a flat wrist/bowed wrist at impact. Unless you speed up your arms and don’t release, which is the common instruction today. Conversely if you have the butt of the club pointing inside the ball coming down you will have a cup in your wrist at impact. It actually is that simple. Biggest cause of the latter is you intentionally lead with the lower body instead of pulling down towards the ball, with both hands not just the left.
