The 1974 Commonwealth Games can still claim to be one of the greatest championships ever in terms of the the men's track events. Here, the 5000m., was certainly no disappointment,Kenyan Ben Jipcho edging England's Brendan Foster out down the home straight, recording the second fastest time in history.Sitting in the crowd, giving a sort of commentary, was coaching legend Arthur Lydiard, quite rightly impressed by the event. In bronze position was Dave Black, adding to the silver he had won in the 10K earlier in the week.Further down the field were defending champion Ian Stewart and Dave Bedford.Jipcho was in the form of his life at these games, also winning the 3K Steeplechase and taking bronze in the legendary world record run by Bayi in the 1500 metres.Sadly for the sport he turned professional shortly afterwards.

Great effort from Foster against one of the all time greats, who has just sadly died. Ben Jipcho world class at 1500/5000 and the Steeplechase. RIP

Best Commonwealth Games of all time for middle and long distances. Also, in my opinion the greatest 1,500m of all time.

I would totally agree with that. Imagine if Quax was in the mix as well. Jipcho also scored bronze in Bayi and Walker's WR 1500m after this tough, fast 5000m in warm conditions.

I remember watching this on tv when I was in Brighton. Perhaps the best race I've seen.

Great footage, especially those shots from right next to the track.

Just heard...an awesome athlete, one of my favourites, who doesn't receive the kind of attention he deserved. RIP indeed.

Wow. 13:14 was a very fast time for back then, especially in a Final where usually it's just the winning that matters. They rarely do fast or record times. The World Record time then was Puttemans' 13:13.

That why I like the commonwealth games it gives athletes, who maybe don't get picked for other championship to go to a major championship, with the European athletics being in the same year and with the smaller countries having a chance

Brendan was the male version of Paula Radcliffe, until Radcliffe got that extra push later in her career, her times went through the roof.

Shame Brendon didn't have a sprint finish or he would be one of the greats.

This was the best Competition of 1974 Sprints Don Quarrie & Raylene Boyle & 1500m Walker Bayi Jipcho Dixon! The 1976 Olympics we’re going to be Ben Jipchos Chance along with Mike Boit but the stupid Boycott cost them their chance! Viren would’ve had plenty on his plate if u add Ben Jipcho in that 5000m & Juantarana the same in the 800m Mike Boit! Then 4 years later the Great John Walker screwed because of the American led Boycott he might not of been able to beat Coe/Ovett but he never had the chance

Possibly Bren. would have won had he remembered to put on his underpants. Anyway, I hate to see a carpet bagger win.
