Johns and Waters are going to be a problem this entire season. Who will beat them? They just toyed with 2 of the best doubles players on tour. Ben just dominates the front court.

Ben might as well ask Anna Leigh to partner up in MD. LOL

That dig by Ben at 20:29 can probably only done by less than a handful of pro's, in tournaments.

Great instinct just to get to the ball, then somehow the wherewithal to send it back as a dink.

Not taking away from the fact that Ben Jones is an awesome player but my god he just needs to play singles in doubles. His previous partner and his current partner were more than capable of holding their own without him coming all the way over on their court 95% of the time

I don’t think he asks people to play with him, I believe the other way around.

Can someone explain to me what happened around the 3:20 mark? Why was that consider'd wrong server?
@hongdinh35332 жыл бұрын
Riley started serve on the right side at 0-2-1, so he'll always be serving on the right side when his team has an even number of points and on the left side when it's odd (vice versa for his teammate). They had 1 point on that particular serve so it should have been Catherine's serve. Serves always start on the right after a side out.

Riley serve out of turn. It was his partner’s turn to serve.

If you won all the time, would you still hate it? 😉

@@sammyleepickleball Agreed! It's not about ego, it's about maximizing each player's skills to win, especially at the pro level where money is on the line. If they could win solidly doing it another way, I'm sure they would. In Ben's case, he's used to playing that way so changing it would likely mess up his rhythm, reducing his effectiveness. Also, his poached shots are usually extremely well disguised which keeps his opponents on the defensive. Thanks for the video! It was awesome!

Honestly, for the top echelon male players, the court is almost too small for doubles. I suspect Ben Johns could beat Ben Johns and any female partner, and perhaps even any male partner. I suspect every player who partners with Johns knows they’re pretty much just along for the ride. I’d love to get a couple of beers in a top male player and see if they think a partner makes them stronger than if they played as a single.

Ball at 16:51 clearly in. Can't anyone be there to make the call with so many watching the match?
@thomasbarbey93162 жыл бұрын
I've seen balls in by several inches called out in big tournaments and the ref doesn't overrule the call because that's not his job. The ref is there for the foot faults. The players are supposed to make that call and if they are wrong there isn't much you can do about it. You just have to move on and hit the ball more "obviously in" next time to avoid that problem. Matches aren't usually won thanks to bad calls and especially not this one. The mind plays tricks on you and both players may have seen the ball go out and you have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Ben Johns is so confident that I've seen him play numerous balls that could have been called out and he doesn't.

Hi Paul, this is Jin. I replayed that part several times but couldn't see the ball clearly in or out. Usually if the opponents question the call, they could ask the ref first, sometimes refs see it and either confirm the call or deny the call, but a lot of times the refs say they didn't see it. If the opponents really question the call, they can ask for a video review, but if their challenge fails, they lose a timeout. I didn't see the opponents challenged that call, so maybe the ball was out. @Thomas Barbey.
@PaulBCohen2 жыл бұрын
@@jisforjoy3314 The opponents did challenge but the ref probably didn't see and the challenging team was winning by a comfortable margin. I freeze framed with the ball on the line - the inside of the line. I allow it could be an optical illusion, but even the trajectory showed in. My point is professional matches should have linesmen

@@PaulBCohen Yes. It'll be nice to have that. I just watched Australia Open and was impressed with how many people were watching. Pickleball is catching up...
