Great interview, really like how grounded he appears to be and how hard he works. Hope he stays healthy and makes it to the show, can't wait to see it!

I find it absolutely crazy that he was topping 67 in his freshman year of high school! Not something expected from a man who throws 104 mph 😂

Probably didn't even hit puberty yet. Some freshman are still little boys.

20:13 is a good point in the video. Ben Joyce said he was never taught how to pitch hard or never had any cues on his mechanics and is still able to throw 104... For everyone who knocks athletes of the past... I think this is a good testament that natural ability can outperform the most advanced training & coaching out there sometimes or at least be just as good

That's a tough one. I can tell you from experience. I played in the Tom House Pitching Mechanics era (keep your weigth on the balls of your foot rather than using your glutes like today's guys do/are taught) and there is no question in general the information these boys have today is soooo much more conductive to consistent power output than what was taught in the 90s. Today's kids are really blessed with having superior mechanical education. For sure, there was Nolan Ryan, there was Tom Seaver, there was Roger Clemens........but those guys were truly exceptional (and they would still be exceptional today). Is just that they are not as rare as they use to be.

@@Strotophonic Yeah, fair point. My point is not that more guys are reaching higher levels of performance, its that some guys have so much talent that even modern training can't find ways to surpass & you'd have to be crazy to believe that there haven't been certain athletes of the past who had just as much talent as the top guys of today. And also, I feel you. I graduated high school in 2012 as a lefty with good movement on my pitches but only throwing about 80MPH & got recruited to pitch D3 baseball for a team that was nationally ranked in the top 10 in the country for D3 schools. I blew my arm out in the fall before I could start the season, then left the college, quit baseball, & didn't play again until 2016 in Juco, which took an immense amount of rehab to condition my injured arm & I overdid it to the point of no return. I wonder how much better I could have been had I not injured my arm & had access to the information of today. We are really in the age of learned velocity.
@Strotophonic
@Strotophonic 2 жыл бұрын
@@spcooper94 Absolutely. Learned Velocity is the greates term I've heard. Young folks today, to their credit, have gotten rid of this thing we had in our head back then y'know? (Velocity was natural, you either have it or you don't..........and a lot of people proud themselves on that)...........Well there ain't you shame in having "Learned Velo". Great discussion.

Joyce hitting the umpire in the face mask with his first pitch fastball reminded me of Kerry Wood's first pitch of his 20k game

@@PitchingNinjaVideos One of the greatest games ever pitched. The only thing that really bothers me is that game didn't have a radar gun, and all estimates of how fast Wood was throwing that day are just speculation. I'd love to see a video where someone was able to perhaps compare and match frame rates of Woods pitches against one of today's modern pitchers who's on the gun 🔥⚾️

Just watched two close games against Vandy and he didn’t pitch…Are the Vols that good that this guy only has 8 innings in 26 games? Or are they saving him kind of? Coming off injury?
