My 'go to' walk. 4 times now and always come back down along the Ptarmigan Ridge. Simply stunning walk. "What Ben Lomonds lacks (normally!) in solitude, it more than makes up for with its views"

It looks like summer is a better time to climb Ben Lomund. I climbed it yesterday which was the end of September and the last third of the mountain was covered in mist. Couldn't see further than 50 meters at the summit

Even in summer there are days like that. When I filmed this it was in the middle of a heat wave and could see the weather was going to be good. Even this weekend Saturday was meant to be better than today but looks like it ended up the opposite!

Thanks for watching Douglas. It was absolutely roasting that day, easily mid to high 20s at ground level, which made the beginning rather uncomfortable. The views were particularly good, especially towards Ben More, so that made up for the heat!

Went up Ben Lomond in June via Ptarmigan ridge as my first Munro in years and glad I did, views were unbelievable. Initially a bit daunting being the first time but glad I done it that way because those views towards the Arrochar Alps and further round were phenomenal. Keep up the good work on the channel, you guys are doing fantastic and your skills regarding hillwalking are brilliant to watch. Love the photography as well capturing those summits etc.

Thank you for the kind words Marco. I’d like to give that way a try in future just to see the mountain from a different angle, but you are right, the views from the ridge are great. It was fantastic watching the sun set over the course of the walk. Did you find going up the ridge to be more difficult than the normal anti-clockwise route?

@@HighlandHikers to be honest I enjoyed it more. Yes it was steeper and presented a bit of challenge with some scrambling to reach the summit but overall enjoyed it especially with the views.

Climbed yesterday. Low cloud, no views for 3 hours. Not a soul to be seen. Past 4 people max. Nobody on the summit, could see absolutely nothing 😂Slippy rocks, took our time. The queue at the ice cream van was non existent which was a pleasant surprise. After descending the other side the cloud eventually cleared to give us rewarding views of Loch Lomond as we head towards the Loch edge. 8.09 miles in 4hrs ✌🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We’ve all had days like that unfortunately and the cloud usually lifts as soon as you’re off the mountain. At least the ice cream reward was swift!

Great video pal.. just arrived back from Loch Lomond area for a few days. Amazing there... was going to stay an extra day and do Ben Lomond but didnt, this video has made me wish I had now!! It looks like the Ptarmigan trail is a little more challenging - being a bit older (61) I always feel more stable going UP steeper trails rather than coming down. Something about falling off a mountain just doesn't appeal. ;) So I'm looking for thoughts about going up Ptarmigan versus coming down it. Thanks

Hi Kirk, it’s certainly a way you can hike Ben Lomond and a lot of people do it that way looking for a bit more of a challenge. It would be a steeper ascent but I wouldn’t imagine it would be too difficult at all.

If you head to Rowardennan you can’t miss it. There isn’t a visitor centre although there are some facilities in the car park like toilets and picnic benches.

The ptarmigan ridge is visually the nicer route up. But I fancy trying the reverse next time.

@@HighlandHikers it's nothing to worry about, just do it on nice weather. Also consider seriously being ultra careful going up that route in winter weather.

I think it would be interesting in Winter but won’t be taking the chances. I imagine it’ll be a wee while before I head back up here given how many more Munros I’ve still to do!

Probably not the best person to ask unfortunately. There are a few sheer drops towards the summit but before that its a fairly broad shoulder for a lot of the way. I would imagine if you kept your dog on a lead and kept it close you might be alright. There are a few Facebook groups for people hiking Munros with dogs, which might be worth a look.
