BEN NEVIS VIA THE CARN MOR DEARG ARETE

Darren dunstan and luke robinson take on the mighty ben on the 26th September 2015 conditions were reasonable it took us 5 hours ascent and 2 hours to descend good time some scary moments but all in all a great day

I climbed it with my 14 year old son a few years ago. We found the hardest bits physically were actually before and after the arete. To get there, we climbed up from the Youth Hostel and turned left (northwards) at the Half Way Lochan. We then made our way round the back (north side) of Castle Ridge on a fairly visible track and into the valley that leads towards the CIC hut. Once there we forded the stream and climbed for about 45 minutes (the first hard bit physically) up the scree slope to the ridge line and the summit of Carn Deag Meadhonach. From there you walk down and up to CMD where you get great views along the arete if the weather is good. Then most of the way across its a pretty easy stroll / scramble although the drops in a couple of places can be a bit vertigo inducing if you are that way inclined. We actually stopped about half way along for lunch just off the ridge line looking towards Aonach Mor. At the end of the arete the 2nd bit we found hard work physically was when you climb westward up the scree slope (about 300m from memory) that leads up to Ben Nevis summit plateau. Here you have to make sure you dont go to far to the right (there are marker posts) as there is a big drop. We then came back down the tourist track and completed the circuit in about 8 hours with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the views and have picnics. The best thing about the CMD route is that you see so few people and have a great view of Ben Nevis from a different angle. To my mind if the weather is kind its a much better way up Ben Nevis than trudging up the Tourist Track zig zag!

Scrambling ben nevis myself few months ago. Same route! Was 1st time ever visiting Scotland. 1st time ever Scrambling a mountain. Was tough really hard work. But did it.

Great effort great video i climbed Ben Nevis via Tourist route this summer .would like to have a go at the arete route. Will need put in some training.Your video as previous comments have stated shows its difficulty.

I climbed the CMD from the "Tourist Path" car park on a day that was warm, sunny, blue skies & a slight breeze...in other words, perfect. It was one of the most magical days I've ever had, a feat of magic only exceeded by the way I suddenly appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, at the summit & much to the surprise of the people having their sandwiches & a rest.

Best POV video I have seen on KZbin. I guess you guys bypassed the narrow spot near the end of the ridge before climbing up the rocks? Where was the most 'sketchy' spot for you? We will be there mid July, 2016.
