How so? I’m a bit puzzled as it won so many awards, including Tony Awards for Best: Musical, Book of a Musical, Original Score, Director, Choreography, Orchestration, and Performance by Featured Actor. There were several nominations, as well, and it catapulted the careers of Johnathan Groff and Lea Michelle. And then it was revived as an ASL production a few years ago and won even more. So I didn’t quite get it.

Yeah, the people who religiously watch the Tony's are obviously going to know about it, but for just the average person who happens to enjoy musicals, it's basically unheard of. Everyone loves Rent and Wicked and Phantom of the Opera and can carry on a conversation about them, but no one knows SA.
