The Kuhio beach groin, known locally as “The Wall” became the epicenter of the paipo scene. STANDING on a paipo was the considered the ultimate at the Wall. They knew it then and the same remains true to this day ....

@blakeyfaz When I was a Grom you were lucky if your car was in 1 piece when you came out of the water at Black Rock the local indigenous peeps were pretty protective of it in those days. It was their sacred place. If you dared to disrespect them you were lucky to leave with your teeth. Seems they let anyone ride it nowadays. I preferred it back then.

@SouthjettyBill Where are you from? I'm guessing somewhere in the vicinity of South Jetty Oregon being that your Identity is based on your locality. I've lived all over the world dude my home town is wherever my wife and I are living and loving at the time. As with my boards my home is something that I make not the other way around. No I don't just surf in summer I have been surfing all year round since before leashes, wetsuits and yes even before Tom Morey invented boogie boards.

@steev3d And PLEASE tell me what "skills" surfers have over bodyboarders...Oh yeah the whole standing up thing. Hey Zues, popping up to your feet doesn't take that long to master...took me two sessions....by the fourth I was bottom turning and doing small turns. But I already had prior wave knowledge and in a month I was snapping, hitting the lip, etc.Then I realized I was following a pattern that tools follow and stuck to what I liked best. Having a hard board doen't make the you/ocean tougher

@SouthjettyBill As a Sponger your Centre Of Gravity is so low you simply can't fall off. Put in its most elemental terms that means that it is MUCH easier to ride a belly board. No matter how you phrase your argument or attack me on a personal level, you know I am right. None of the little pirouette 360 turns and barrel rolls you do will ever compare to the gravity defying skill of an inverted backhand hack while standing up. It's physics man! You can't argue with physics.

@steev3d Oh one last thing - Why sponging is better than surfing. More fun(yes it is). Handles all conditions. Let's face it the sponge is better suited for small dumpy surf. I don't want to squat in a self - fellating pose to squeeze in a 3 foot bowl. I don't need ten boards for every friggin increment in wave height. Sponges are better suited for big, dumping, shallow spots, also. I like dropping in head first not feet first. Waves seem bigger on a sponge. I hate looking down at waves. ETC.

@SouthjettyBill I paddle out at my local beach in summer and there are hundreds of spongers floating right inside the takeoff zone like a raft of incompetence. I am constantly confronted with the decision to go and risk busting some flailing idiot's spleen or miss the wave of the day. As for my board being the basis of my identity? I build and ride my own boards so they are really an offshoot of me not the other way round. As for my area code? What the fuck are you talking about?

@SouthjettyBill Of course Gravity exists but the Centre of gravity being so low when lying down means it is much much easier to sponge than surf. I can't speak for Peter King or your nameless Pro Sponger or anything that they may or may not have done. I can only presume that the pro sponger had previous stand board experience and that King had zero sponging experience but as I haven't read the article or know anything of the background of either of your claimed participants I cant comment.

@steev3d anybody can surf too. Standing up on a 6'2'' isn't that difficult. Yeah it's so rare to see a person surfing.....it's such a unique talent. These dudes would blow you out of the water. Give any good sponge a few weeks on a surfboard and they'd surf rings around you on that too. Insecure surfers are the best.......and why do you guys ALWAYS watch sponge vids ?? Let me ask this: in the realm of "mainstream sports" are ice hockey players the most talented group because they're on skates?

@steev3d No, I could surf...standing up....balance isn't such an issue for me. Kind of comes naturally. Again, what seperates good waterman is knowledge, timing and guts.Not balance...You should take up gymnastics or tightrope walking. @steev3d Um gravity exists whether you are on a hardboard or a sponge.A backhand hack isn't too difficult. I used to do them. Actually I don't do the whole weak ass spin and el floppo shit. I'm a fucking original...march to the beat of my own drummer. Surfer Mag did a thing with pro surfer Peter King and a pro boogie....comparing the two. King couldn't even do a hand drag spinner....pro boogie even landed an air on the "real " board. King made Oklahoma tourists look good. Wow he couldn't sponge

@steev3d Pro boogie was Ross Mcbride and there isn't anything to comment about. It is what it is. I know people who sucked at sponging. God awful, but they're good surfers. The rush ? You get a better sense of speed with your head closer to the water....and really your brain is just a few feet higher in the air on a surfboard...wow what a thrilling difference. @steev3d Let's just end this by you submitting a video of you doing ANY of this stuff in this Blackrock sponge vid....I'll give you three months.....Put up or shut up.....In the past ten years two editors of the major U.S. surf mags have been injured and reduced to sponging...both wrote pieces about it...You could tell that both of them were stoked on the sponge but and I quote, "wanted to get back in the band." It all boiled down to image and being part of the "in" crowd.

@steev3d Yeah I'm not real impressed with snowboarders busting airs on half pipes. My point of bringing up "Other Sports" is that you think standing on a surfboard is some big accomplishment. It's not. Millions of people do it everyday. That wasn't a rip on Hamilton it's to demonstrate that standing up isn't some major deal. You couldn't do the shit in this video. I've surfed and sponged so I know what I'm talking about...You don't.
