Dressel 21.15 Proud 21.16 Manaudou 21.19 The 3 fastest man ever on 50m without swimsuit. Too bad Manaudou retired but next year Dressel vs Proud could be epic

He's almost got that Dressel start replicated. Looks like the 50 WR will be challenged by 2019 WCs. If Fratus could get his start fixed (he's got a very average start) and combine that with his 2017 WCs speed, he too will challenge that WR. If Proud can extend that speed with the endurance of a 100 Free, then the only weak link in the UK 4x100 squad is the backstroke leg. If they can get a good backstroker, than man the race is on for the gold and the WR is sure to be long gone!

MrVpassenheim Britain already have a pretty good 100 free leg - Duncan Scott has been 47.9 flat start and has split 47.2 anchoring the relay previously.

True, but in a close relay race every advantage counts. The USA beat Britain by 1 to 1.3 seconds over the last 2 global competitions (2017 WCs and 2016 Olympics). If Britain had a halfway decent backstroker and could gain maybe 0.5 seconds on the anchor, guess what? That gold medal is up for grabs, and that is saying much considering it's an event the US has never lost in Olympic competition. At Proud's rate of improvement, it is very reasonable to expect that he can go 21 flat, maybe even 20.9 come Tokyo. Dressel's flat 100 is 47.17 with a 21.15 50. That's 0.75 second faster than Scott's 47.9. A 20.9 Proud in Tokyo who also trains for the 100, should very well be capable of a 47.0 flat start, and that's on the conservative side of things. That's a huge part of Britain's winning equation. Considering they've had a mediocre backstroker and have still kept the margin less than 1.5 seconds - their upside is significant.

I 100% agree. I think Fratus and Tony Ervin are still the fastest swimmers ever, they just never had the start. At this point all it takes is a bit of luck with reaction time and a perfect swim for Proud or Dressel to go under 21. Exciting times. Very interesting that Proud and Dressel have basically come up with an identical start, while Manaudou's was the exact opposite, although all going to 15m UW. Deep dives will become the norm in the future I think.

Yes, and it is evident (about Fratus and Ervin) in those last 2 contests. If Fratus got a better start, he'd be an odds on favorite for the gold in this event. He gives up over a meter on the start here, and I'm pretty sure that's the same start he used at the 2017 WCs, where he went 21.27 and a close 2nd to Dressel. He would already challenge the WR with a Dressel/Proud type start.

it was a year later, a lot can happen in a year. pretty sad tho, was hoping he would step up and challenge Dressel, would be a bit like Cavic and Phelps. It's not looking like he will tho.

Ward Huyskes yeah I really hope he gets back in top form. He’d be one of the only people who could pose a legitimate challenge to Dressel but his recent performances have been pretty lacklustre

a lot of doping...

jex externe No reason to think doping is involved. The very best athletes have been swimming the 50m freestyle in less than 22 seconds for almost 30 years.
