I just had my son and when I listen to this song, I can't help but tear up. I've had 4 losses and after so many wishes on the stars, I was finally pregnant. My son was born 3 weeks early due to induction. 06/25/24 at 12:19 pm. 14 hours of labor and 9 minutes of pushing and there he was. This.. Tiny little thing that needed me just as much as I needed him. The way his entire hand holds my pinkie.. I cannot describe it. I cannot describe the type of love I feel for this tiny being that looks at the world with such wonder and curiosity in his eyes. I have never seen someone see the world in such wonder like he sees things.

What I like about this song is the open subtext. Other songs it’s obvious that the singer is talking about a child/a spouse/etc., but here it’s kind of open to your own interpretation, and that’s what makes it so personally special to you. I’ve seen a lot of comments where people have said it’s their first song at their wedding, or it reminds them of their daughter. For me, it’s both! Also the song isn’t just about the spouse or daughter, it’s about how your love for them made you a better man and helped you grow as a person. That’s not a perspective I hear about much in songs and it resonates.

You should be a man before you fall in love and make that kind of commitment. It’s not your spouse’s job to make you grow up. Fatherhood will make anyone grow up, on the other hand.

I heard George Sheppard from the band “Sheppard” play this song once on a livestream for his fans (just playing acoustic by himself) and I fell in love with the song. So I’ve heard Ben Rector songs before. But as time continues and other artists and songs get created and released, past songs I’ve liked get drowned out by newer stuff. I was watching American Idol and remembered the duel Ben had with Graham DeFranco and the vocals and the tones the song demanded from them were so beautiful that it quickly became my favorite duet to EVER come from American Idol. But once it was over, I forgot about it. Now it’s 2:30 in the morning, suddenly remembered it and it’s like I’m falling in love all over again. I can’t wait to learn this song so I can sing it too.
