In principle, it is an extrapolation of streaming-type services in other areas of life. In streaming, for example, people watch movies and no longer have DVDs or Blu-rays, and it is the service that ensures quality storage, which allows greater coverage, ease of access, fewer accessories and much lower costs. This is increasingly seen in other cases such as AWS, Amazon Web Service - many companies no longer own their servers, but rather pay for a service, saving costs, maintenance, etc. The idea behind the philosophy is the promotion of a service economy, at any time you can use a car, objects of all kinds that you do not own, whose maintenance, storage and others is managed by third parties, and with low costs and with great variety in easy way. This phrase does not imply that private property will be abolished or that people will be forced to give up their possessions. Rather, it is a projection of how consumption and ownership trends could evolve in the future. In principle I think it should be something mixed, for example for essential things like a House it is much better to "have" but for the rest, reducing costs, facilitating access, variety and seeing modern examples such as web services, consoles, expensive equipment, I don't see it as problematic.

@@RojirigoDThis. The phrase comes from an essay that basically says "You won't own a car... because you'll be able to just ORDER a car to come and get you where you want so you won't need one." It's kind of stupid but it doesn't mean what conspiracy nutters think.

It's so annoying. We on the left always had our criticism against the WEF, especially here in Switzerland, where we had demonstrations and blockades because the WEF (especially after around 2000) was seen as elitest, neoliberal and ultra-capitalist, with some ecological and social topics sprinkled in to come across slightly less annyoing. We always had those criticisms and will always have them. But then the right sweeps in with their conspiracy nonsense and search for a boogeyman in Klaus Schwab (the guy looks like Dr. Evil and speaks German, bingo!) and completely undermine any valid criticism. Now it's just memes and conspiracies in a pool of right wing demagoguery.

I worked with a far-righter some years ago and he was _absolutely_ convinced that resources were infinite, and I do think that particular idea is a fundamental necessity to supporting economic systems that must see continued growth to survive. It was kind of funny in a grim way watching them twist into pretzels attempting to explain how finite resources are a conspiracy theory but not quite figuring out what benefits that "lie" would actually net.
@rfldss89
@rfldss89 8 ай бұрын
the thing is that, on a human scale, most ressources, especially energy, are for all intents and purpose infinite. It's just that exploiting those ressources requires technology we don't have yet and maybe never will and it gets increasingly more energy-intensive to extract them (if we ever somehow use up all the iron contained within the earth's crust, there is more iron at the core, there's iron all around us in space, etc, it's just not feasible to go get it).
@MPostma72
@MPostma72 8 ай бұрын
@@rfldss89 Not really, iron is just a bad example, because it's quite common. Easily accessable oil and gasreserves for example, will run out in 50-60 years. Current known uranium reserves will be depleted by the end of the century. Nothing infinite about that.
@fluidthought42
@fluidthought42 8 ай бұрын
@@rfldss89 It's more accurately said that some limited resources, like oil, are basically nigh-inexhaustabls but the industry needed to extract it from harder and harder to reach places is going to cost our environment and living standards more and more. Look ay fracking for example and how it poisons ground water and causes all sorts of other havoc for the people living near fracking operations.

As someone who knows a lot of people who work as fishermen or in the fishing industry, the people who work there are perhaps the most clueless about the finite nature of what brings them work. They don’t seem to understand that if you fish everything you loose it all forever. They say they understand, but every time the government restricts the fishing quotas they will complain and tell you that it isn’t necessary. Capitalism corrupts absolutely if you let it.

His "I kind of agree with the fascists, but I also shill for the neo-lib capitalist class" routine can't last forever. Especially when he rallies against people like Joe Biden, who also aligns with those neo-liberal views (while probably disagreeing with Ben on something like climate change). The Tucker Carlson-watching branch of conservatives, want to be reminded that there is a cabal of progressive elites (in their mind, the Jews) seeking to destroy western civilization. And those people are buying into all this anti-WEF rhetoric. So, that is the rabbit hole Shapiro needs to throw himself down.

Honestly, the upheaval from the crowd made me embarrassed to be a part of it. My mom is a professional Italian chef who's written menus for a half dozen restaurants, all of which kept using them after she left. We eat phenomenal Italian food both modern and ancient, done authentically and done well. Everything Vaush said was objectively true. It is heavy, it is a little boring, and of any national cuisine on earth, it's easily the most overrated. And that's talking about real Italian food! Fast food versions are atrocious, with such massive quantities of dough and cheese that just looking at it makes me sick. Most people who say they love Italian food have never even tried it too. The last time I showed someone a real pizza, they said "what have you done to that poor pizza?" when the only weird thing about it was the presence of pesto and lack of mozz. Something common in Italy, but rare over here. You motherfuckers will defend absolutely inedible slop if it's at least 50% flavorless globby cheese. The same type of person that defends McDonalds and Taco Bell. It makes me genuinely wonder how many people have even tried cuisines they didn't grow up with. Eat it if you want to, but don't pretend you've got any place to lecture on taste.

It could be like a novel about people -perhaps teen to make it YA- having to rebuild after some post apocalyptic event like plague the right wing failed to deal with and through out the book the people who are trying to build something better than what came before take leftist ideas. You would have to cover the clear promotion of such ideas with a good story, characters and plot so it doesn't get itself banned in all the red states. It sound silly I know but still I think done right it could be a fun and educational read. Hard to say because improvements in extraction technology make it feasible to access oil that was previously thought to be uneconomical. There aren't many places left now where you can just dig a hole and have it spurt up. But we do have improved deep-water drilling technology, and oil shale processing. You don't set up giant off-shore drilling platforms if there is easily accessible oil on land nearby. You set up the giant off-shore drilling platforms because your father already emptied out the field on land.

Another note on credit cards is that even if you always pay them off they charge service fees to the vendors, which ultimately increase the price of goods whether you have a credit card or not. Its a hidden cost but its a cost of the credit system; similar to how you don't think about the part of income tax that your employer pays but it does effect how much companies pay. The fact that so much is paid for on credit essentially adds a sales tax that goes to banks even if they don't collect debt servicing fees.

Skyscrapers are an important technology for large walkable cities. Without skyscrapers, we won't have high-density urban centres, we'll have medium-density urban spill. This is likely to bring with it negative social changes. OTOH, even though there won't be skyscrapers as we know them without steel, even plain old wood construction can relatively easily reach around eight-floor buildings, plus or minus a bit, and new fancy plastics or advances in graphene chemistry might be able to improve on that, even if graphene-based steel-less skyscrapers are unlikely. (But then again, in our history, most of plastics science was developed on the basis of coal tar chemistry. Bakelite, now obsolete, is the main exception.)

not even 6 and a half minutes into this and i am already losing my mind.. reading more of that Friedman's quote (from 1970's NYT article) there's no wonder why Benny boy likes him: "The discussions of the “social responsibilities of business” are notable for their analytical looseness and lack of rigor. What does it mean to say that “business” has responsibilities? Only people can have responsibilities. A corporation is an artificial person and in this sense may have artificial responsibilities, but “business” as a whole cannot be said to have responsibilities, even in this vague sense. The first step toward clarity in examining the doctrine of the social responsibility of business is to ask precisely what it implies for whom." No wonder i never liked him lmaoo he sounds pretentious as hell.. but it also reminds me of Benny's attempt at "arguing" with the political compass on "If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations" question where he argued that there's no difference between the interests of the corporations and the interests of the humanity..

Rather than some cataclysm that destroys human civilization, we'll slowly exhaust more and more resources required to maintain our current level of technology, and eventually revert to earlier technology, over a long enough period of time eventually reverting to stone tools as even accessible iron and copper is exhausted.

Simple way to explain the credit economy. The bulk of most families net worth is in the value of their home if the are lucky enough to own their own. but most people who own their own home don't even own it outright, they have a mortgage, that if they fail to pay, will give the bank ownership of that home. The bulk of the wealth of the American middle class exists as credit.

They first say that there’s always been a natural changing in temperature throughout the millennia (ignoring the fact that the claim is that this natural process is going faster and at a rate that the environment can’t adapt to). Second, they say that God takes care of the world and would not let it be destroyed before he wants it to (but what are they going to say if they have to make these claims to non-Christians? I don’t think they care enough or know enough people to have to do that).
