Thanks for doing that walk through. I enjoyed seeing the inner workings and hear about some of the engineering behind the various parts like the spring. Very cool!

Theres a video on youtube where Bob Dozier takes a slip joint knife and started explaining how a good quality one is contructed and he mentioned that if everything is smooth and aligned on the back that its a quality knife.

Is it possible to take a vintage slip joint and replace the pins with barrels and screws so the knife can be maintained easier? (Easy takedown and clean)
@BenBelkin
@BenBelkin Жыл бұрын
hi John, I imagine it could be possible but it would cost a large sum of money penny to pay an expert to do that work for you. Lots of drilling precision bores and countersinks.

Would it be easier to first attach only one barrel and the pivot with blade, then clamp the spring with the vice and drop the other barrel in? That way there is less to manage when tensioning the spring (and it uses the vice for that work)? Thanks for the video - this definitely scratched my tinkerer itch. Just got my first Jack Wolf this weekend.
@JackWolfKnives
@JackWolfKnives Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thank you for giving my knives a try and I hope you love it! To answer your question: If you put in the pivot and one barrel, that leaves one barrel to be installed (as you suggested). However the hole in the spring for that barrel and the counterbore on the bottom of the liner will not line up. So whether or not you leave the middle spring hole or bottom spring hole open, you will have to drive the spring outward to make the holes line up so you can drop the barrel in. Which is basically the same thing I am doing with the pivot barrel. So I am not sure how you would use the vice to do that, but if you can send me a video of a better technique I am certainly open to learning new ways! -Ben

Hey Ben, thanks for showing us, and I know you don't want us to, but are the tang of the blades on different models the same dimensions to the extent so it would be possible for you to swap blades and handles between the different models?
@JackWolfKnives
@JackWolfKnives 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, thats a good question. The answer is no, each model has unique geometry and therefore blades cannot be swapped.
@JohnSmith-ym3zq
@JohnSmith-ym3zq 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh, would you possibly consider being able to choose maybe with a drop-down option selector for future runs, or put out a poll for some limited runs in the future. I would go for the 'gun stock' handle with the blade from your Vampire or Venom models.
@JackWolfKnives
@JackWolfKnives 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-ym3zq thank you for the suggestion. My plan is to offer certain models with varying blade shapes over time. That is one of the cool things that you find with traditional knives, so you can look forward to that from me 👍

Thanks for giving us an inside breakdown of these slips. I just took mine apart to address an issue of over-loctite from the last owner and I got everything back together successfully with just one issue. In the off chance you see this, do you sell any replacement washers for the Big Bro Jack? I noticed one of mine was sort of smashed and kinked (still works though) almost as if the previous owner tried disassembling it and jammed the pivot nut into it while it wasn't seated. Or if you know the thickness/diameters of them so I can source a replacement, that'd be great! I'm definitely not going to take it apart again just to check because my thumbs are destroyed trying to get the blade back in lol.

Where can I source the threaded barrels? These knives are amazing. I'd live to get one some day.
@BenBelkin
@BenBelkin 2 жыл бұрын
You can find all sorts of threaded barrels at knife supply stores, such as USA Knife Maker, Jantz Supply and also Ti-Connector. They are also referred to as pivot barrels. Thank you!
@PatheticPeasant
@PatheticPeasant 2 жыл бұрын
@@BenBelkin thank you for your reply. I looked into ti connectors and feel like that's what I'd need. I had a heart attack when I saw the price of their screws, which means I'm screwed. Lol. I've searched janz and us knifemaker before with no luck but will try again. I wish you were local to SoCal and that you'd take me in as an apprentice. My goal is to make custom slip joints. I've been making fixed blades for awhile and have always been attracted to traditional knives. I'll be punching pennies to buy one of yours. I'll trade ya mine for yours!
@BenBelkin
@BenBelkin 2 жыл бұрын
@@PatheticPeasant yeah their stuff is not cheap because it is Titanium and made in the USA, so that equals big bucks! I am not a knife maker, only a designer, so I would not be much help! But a lot of the slip joint makers will teach you the trade. You should visit some of them at one of the knife shows. As far as a knife swap, I only seek to trade my knives for cash lol. I have too many knives as it is!
