Averages 29 in test cricket hardly setting the world alight

@@JY-ev5ms yes and what would a new keeper batsmen average? Bairstow has been averaging similar since his injury... Let's say we got one averaging 35-40. That would be a massive step up. Well if they drop the number 3 or 4 batsmen that will cost a heck of a lot more than 5-10 runs so that average increase is wiped out for the whole series. Ontop of that Foakes 'creates' wickets that other keepers don't.

@@mattyu1818 Doesn't work like that, it doesn't mean they get 5 more runs every time, Bairstow won more games with the bat then Foakes did with the gloves

We've always needed a wk batsman and foakes has suffered Bcos of that. I love ben playing for England. Jonny b too. And jb does my head in sometimes. Foakes is a better keeper

Totally agree with you, it sucks but ultimately as Kimber and Bumble have mentioned before, is the WK role slowly becoming irrelevant in cricket ? It seems since Gilchrist really put the stamp on having a strong no7 batter keeper, people haven't been able to keep up in one area or the other. Ultimately it comes down to the england staff believing they will get more value out of Smith if he can average 40+ but leak out a few runs, so long as he does the basics of WK right. I may be wrong in all I'm saying but it sort of makes sense.
