Cricket journalist Bharat Sundaresan reported that he’d noticed the Australian players “hanging around for quite a while waiting” to meet up with the English players after the match, with “Steve Smith even peering into the English rooms a couple of times before giving up.” Sundaresan went on to report that the Australians had asked the English players about getting together, as is considered both traditional and sportsmanlike, but “didn’t get a response and allegedly the home team stayed behind locked doors.” Sundaresan later reported that the English camp had clarified that the reason for the lack of post-series drinks with the opposition was in fact because of the concurrent retirements of Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali.

What about the ball tampering? Not the fault of Stokes but he should acknowledge that they only started to take wickets when they were given a near new ball as a replacement. when the the Australian innings seem well settled.
@wunnell
@wunnell Жыл бұрын
There was no ball-tampering. Why would Stokes dwell on a decision made by the umpires when they've just won a Test match? England did a lot right in this game and that ball was hardly new when they took the last 7 Australian wickets so it should be obvious that any captain is going to highlight that, especially immediately after the game.
@markbowman2890
@markbowman2890 Жыл бұрын
@@wunnell Ball tampering was not the best description of what occurred with the change of the ball during the second innings. Comparing the condition and appearance of the damaged ball with the one that the umpires chose was noticeable. Furthermore, when they used it, the ball was lively and all of a sudden England started taking wickets. If the roles had been reversed, and England were on the wrong side of this decision then we would have heard no end to the saga, a la the Bairstow stumping incident.
@wunnell
@wunnell Жыл бұрын
@@markbowman2890 *"Ball tampering was not the best description..."* No it wasn't, because ball tampering is a specific thing, e.g. rubbing sandpaper on a ball to make it swing more, and that thing didn't happen here. *"...we would have heard no end to the saga..."* And that would be pretty pathetic, just as this is pathetic. My issue here is not that Australian fans feel aggrieved but rather the conspiracy theories being spouted and the fact that many are hiding behind this as an excuse to ignore any other failings of Australia in this game and even the series. The replacement ball did more than the one it replaced but that's not unusual. The reason teams try to get the ball replaced in the first place is that the one they have is not providing much movement. Australia did the very same thing in an earlier game and they took wickets with the replacement ball because it was swinging much more but no one seems to remember that. In this particular case, the appearance of the two balls seemed to more different than is usually the case but replacing a ball that isn't moving with one that does is not uncommon at all and England have been on both sides of that in this series and in others, as have Australia. For the record, I have no issue with what Carey did and the reaction of many England fans at the time and afterwards was disgraceful. Apart from the abuse of Australian players, they are also hiding behind that as excuse to ignore England's own failings. That said, I do think that the arguments that many have made against those accusations and in support of Carey and Australia are pretty poor and indicate a guilty conscience, i.e. I think many more people have an issue with the principle of what happened than are saying but they are just supporting Carey because he's on their team or because they hate England. It's very possible to make a bad argument for the right side and I've seen a lot of that.

@@stZxt, yes and no. Obviously there have always been players and teams that scored quickly but it was generally that the mode of play followed the player. In England's case, they have deliberately transformed themselves without too much of a change in personnel and it is something that has required buy-in by the whole team. There's nothing new under the sun, but this team transformation is a little different to anything we've seen in the past. They've made themselves the team and the players they are by playing this way, rather than playing this way because they are the team or players that they are. It's also important to note that BazBall doesn't actually exist. England aren't holding press conferences and announcing that they have invented BazbBall and are going to adhere to its rules from here on. The coach and captain decided that they wanted their team to have a particular ethos, both with bat and ball, and the team has played with that ethos since. It was a journalist who coined the term and now every fan has decided what it means to them, but there are no hard and fast rules to it.

One of the greatest series I have witnessed.. India _Australia series in Australia last time and this series could be the best ones.. Loved the baseball approach of England team.. Badly wanted England to win the ashes.. Hats off to Australia also for producing the best cricket and the way counter attacked and kept their cool despite tremendous aggression from their rivals.. Steve Smith was phenomenal and so was Mitchell Stark in this series.. They missed Nathon lyon may be in last tests.. Overall ,a wonderful series..Kudos to both teams!!!🎉🎉

Brilliant series. As an Australian there is nothing in cricket than an Ashes series in England. 2--2 felt like the correct result.

I don't say this because I'm English but England are the most exciting team to watch in World cricket by some distance , some of the stuff England have played in the last 12 months has been fantastic to watch and has changed the way the game is played or how it can be played.

Change the ball to a much newer one, rip through the Aussie order. Amazing - but of course, that's within the spirit of the game......when the Poms do it.

Almost every session was make or break and has captivated viewers throughout.. Ashes at its best - on last day I felt Aussies will win post Smith - Head partnership and few moments later falling wickets in quick succession changed the course.

English had the gall to talk about the "spirit of cricket" then they should have put that ball back in the case and continued with the old one. Absolutely no movement on the old ball, getting smoked by the openers, suddenly they get a ball shinier than a mirror facing the sun, all of a sudden, wickets fall. Absolute farce. England getting all the help this series, still couldn't get the ashes back.

Disgraceful how he can stand there knowing he got the most unprecedented gift of a brand new ball at the 40 over mark. Australia was well on the way to easily winning the game. The Umpires will be investigated and found innocent of course.

Test cricket would not have any worries if we had another test rivalry like the Ashes, e.g., an Indo-Pak series every two years. The Ashes are different from a regular test series. It is its own brand.

@patrickjohnson1309 😂 is that all you can say . The rain is the only thing that saved Australia from losing it.. anyone who watched this series knows how lucky the Australians were.. England were well below there best first two tests and still should have won.. if your happy with being second best in a two horse race And drawing . Well done. But there no doubt the Australians were second best to England not at there best too..😂😂

I think its unfair for Australia in this final 5th test, when the ball hit Khawaja's helmet why was Englands replacement ball a shiny near new looking ball compared to the old beaten up looking one. The umpires need to do far better and learn how to pick similar balls properly. it proved to be a big difference in this final test, Warner and Khawaja were going smoothly and starting to take the match away from England until that new ball came on and gave huge advantage to Englands bowlers

Brilliant from England , The rain in Manchester saved the Aussies and they’ll feel they’ve got away with one with series ending 2-2. Let’s hope we push on in the new year against India and really trouble them in their own backyard . Congratulations to Stuart Broad and imo he’s our greatest ever bowler,even though jimmy has more wickets I feel Stuart was more of a big game player as shown today . Lastly moeen ali, what an absolute legend . Came in at the last minute and took big top order wickets and volunteered his services at 3 after popes injury and scored runs. Congratulations mo enjoy your retirement sir !

Another narrow view of the series. Rise above the belief that the rain only saved the Aussies. Obviously a 5 Test series and all of the contributing factors are beyond your memory and your level of honesty.

Let’s face it, England shoulda won 3-2, but that’s the nature of cricket,too dependent on the weather, ball, pitch, toss of a coin. A very dramatic, unforgettable series.

Luck is always a part of cricket so you can't really count the bad and ignore the good. Really, England should have won 4-0 because they made too many mistakes that cost them the first game and played the short ball so incredibly badly in the second. Those were things that were within their control. Of course, Australia made some mistakes too so they could probably say the same thing. Mistakes are also part of the game and it seems to me that some of the most compelling cricket tends to be played between good but flawed teams and that is exactly what we saw here.
