The cypress is now a sweet tree. I haver had a similar problem with mine for 15 years. Never quite sure how to progress but this vid has given me great direction and ideas about restyling it in the spring. It will take a few months to get it right but the start is here. Thanks for all the hints and ideas. Prince Edward Island Canada

It looks sooo natural! Way to go! From the very first minute of that video I hoped you’d be taking that branch off - it was the right choice to make, the asymmetry it created gives so much character to the tree. Looking forward to its future development!

You did a nice job. They are not easy trees to work on, bark rips easily, branches are like wet rope in rigidity and they won’t back bud. Given all these challenges, I like your outcome.

As many of us, I can relate to having initial problems on selecting the options you have in selecting an initial design. Your patience and thoughts on the styling of it over the timeframe have given you a very nice tree. Oh, and you’ve given me a few good ideas on addressing one of ours.

Definitely right design for that Beautiful tree. I saw the potential in raw form because it had a natural habitat of growth that you did an excellent job Refining

Good job Ben ! I would too remove that small bar branch. I like the natural beauty of it. You have come a long way. I still remember seeing how you styled trees when you first started. 😅 Thank you for producing these educational bonsai videos.

To be completely honest, I liked this tree way better in its original state. In my opinion that tree needed only some fine wiring. Anyways, even if I don't like the decisions and the chosen aesthetic, this is a job well done, congrats!

Awesome tree! Thanks for sharing the process. The tree before reminds me of some nearby forest trees, with the multiple branches going upwards towards the top. I guess the afterwards makes it look more professional and structurally sound. Though choices! Love it none the less.

I bought a small Hinoki Cypress from a local nursery as a first bonsai subject, still waiting on materials before I dive in, however I did prune off a few bits that were dispurportunate or turning yellow-hope I didn’t make any errors. Not as well purportion Ed to start with as yours is.

I am a recent fan of Hinoki & now have 4 in my yard. I did "Niwaki" to one so far & it came out good for me, a novice. They are a great tree. Even nicer was your Giant Seqoiya banzai. Is that tree a "keeper" & how is it today? Thank you, C. Griffin, MI zone 6.

Nice tree, I have a few Hinoki and it's hard, didn't learn till after I styled the first that they don't back bud, soooo ya gots to bend branches to shorten. Now that I know I am much more cautious as you were to fully removing any branches with foliage.

tree has potential for windswept but you have to cut that pas that is not left nor right of the trunk and then also reduce the length of your 2nd from the bottom pad if that lowest pad is your main direction of movement for the branches/foliage

Rad tree Ben. Both cuts were a good move. I would just nix the upward jin's- upward jin's and downward or straight branches weird me out. Tree looks awesome regardless. Keep em coming!

Hey Ben, I know what you mean, sometimes you put off working on styling when it's a tricky job! But you nailed it on this hinoki, the end result looks superb. And really looks like a large tree in nature... great work! Regards from Dave in Madrid

I'm glad you took off that vertical branch......it was bothering me. There is one more about half way up the tree that is obstructing the view of that major curve in the trunk line. You may have left it because removing it would have created a big gap in the foliage, but maybe you can develop some new foliage to replace it, or perhaps changing the angle of your front would clear the view of the trunk line and hide that secondary trunk (that you already removed the top of). Just something to think about if you want to create a tree that conforms to traditional Japanese bonsai form.......

Hi ben, during winter what is the best way to keep this tree.? First time to have this tree here in northern america. Does it need to exposed to sunlight or bury on ground and cover it with snow?

Nice work... tree and video, I purchased an hinoki cypress nana this summer as well but haven’t done anything but slip pot it as it was late summer at the time of purchase, I plan to start development this spring.your video was informative in that I wasn’t sure how much and how often I should trim. I don’t know what it will look like or how long it will take as I am a fan of the clip and grow methods, any pointers?

So I have a question - I was told that one should not prune the Hinoki with scissors as it will cause some die back, but to pinch the fans back. Is this NOT correct after all? Thank you! (I hope someone will be able to answer this....)

Like it but maybe would have kept that lower left branch on it just to possibly gain some movement there with time and then cut it off. That segment of the trunk is super straight.

If the tree gave you two paths at the beginning which made it unique and ended up with one branch, why not just buy a one branch tree to begin with, sorry I love tree with two sides, which it started out with.

The befor had me but The after made me Feel i have no vision i would not have seen The bonsai hiding in The befor Stock evin Tho i loved The tree befor you started. I can turn an ugly tree in to a nice bonsai but if i get a super nice pre bonsai i get afraid i ruin it and go kinda blind and that is why i normaly only save hopeless trees and never dare get a super nice One like The One in The video
