I will confess that sometimes I get so excited about stuff I find that I forget to give it a once over. Every time it happens I swear I’m never going to do it again, but it never seems to work out that way. It’s a nice little sized vise and should be a great user or display as long as you don’t abuse it of course! Excellent job as always! 🔥

Thanks Man! There was Soooo much paint. I saw it had a bit of damage but it didn't look that bad. But what really got me was painting over the rust. They even took it apart to do it! Asshats! Take it easy.

Geoge that Erie vice is glad you bought it and brought back to a working vice.❤ Some times painting a vice is good to bring it back to what it should look like. However I completely agree with you about keeping it plain metal and keeping it oiled and keeping the vices battle scars! Great job my friend🎉🎉🎉!
@Uwannawatch7 ай бұрын
Thank You Stephen. I truly appreciate that. I think I might look into getting a small welder to repair scars but I do love the clean metal look.

A fantastic result mate. I was never a fan of bare metal vices until I saw your work. They are now my favourite and this one is no exception. Those gouges are nothing. Just battle scars, showing the tool’s history. Glad you freed that vice from its horrible paint overcoat and that you are happy with it. Great job buddy. Take care and say hi to Chrissy and the family for us.

@Dalesworkshop7 ай бұрын
George I saw you swet a little on that one, but what a difference it looks really good. Do you think you could build up the gouges with a weld and reshape it. I'm sure you already thought of that. John Fix likes the JB Weld. Great Video enjoyed it.
@Uwannawatch7 ай бұрын
Hey Mr. Dale, Ya I thought about the weld. I'm thinking about getting a little welder but I just bought a couple of things for the shop. I know steel stick works pretty good but if I use that I would have to paint it.

That one scared me with all the paint on it but atleast it wasn't broken under the paint. I have a Vevor MMA200 3 in 1 stick welder from Amazon that cost $79 that makes short work of divots and gouges like those. You really should invest in one. Nicely done Super George!

@@Uwannawatch i emailed you the Amazon link. I got one for Christmas and it works great for chipped hammer faces, gouges and small cracks in tools plus it welds plastic. It's an awesome little machine for the money.

Love that little vise. Have you considered heating with a torch and wiping on boiled linseed oil? Like seasoning a cast iron pan. Do 3 coats and you maintain that natural finish but also protect from rust. Give it a wipe down every 6 months to a year after

Thanks! Who's to say what perfection is? I think it depends on your perspective. Do what makes you happy and let the project speak to you. trust me I'm no expert. Some things scream high polish and i do that but then put cold blue on it because it's too shiny.

Nice george , I personally believe oil on the screw is the better option , as we see here it moves nice , I think grease ( as well as being mucky) slows it down , this one was good to leave all those scars in , thou makes you wonder how it got those lower ones !

Hi George, Is it possible when restoring a vice that has deep gauges , to fill those up with JB Weld ? If you want a nice finish and a useful vice, will JB weld hold up. I have my dad's vice and he probably paid very little for it. The original owner broke it and had it welded. Then my dad bought over 60 years ago and I still use it. Take care. Roland
@UwannawatchАй бұрын
Hello Roland, Yes you can use JB weld or steel stick as long as it's not structural. It's fine if it's just for cosmetics. let me know how it turns out.
@patrickmeyer19677 ай бұрын
I loved the outcome!! I have seen some "weld repairs" on cast iron that make it look horrible, I have also seen some that were brazed with brass that look truly awesome while others look like a kid snotted all over the thing. If it was a daily user and had damage that would interfere with solid use I would consider brazing, but for a display the "naked" look is better. I am curious why you used oil on the Acme screw ? I have been using graphite grease on my user vises and it seems to work well without hardening. Also How many "adult beverages did this one take? Cant wait for the next video!!!!
@Uwannawatch7 ай бұрын
Thanks Patrick! I think you're right I think the braze look is classy but it's funny how people throw snot welds 🤣. I use grease most of the time but since this one will be on a shelf until I need it. I went with oil. My shop get's extremely dusty. It seems like if I use grease on the Acme screw dust will stick to it but the oil not so much. Maybe a couple of adult beverages were consumed. I only get one full day in the shop and it's Saturday other than that I work too much at my job.

Hi George. I've never done a vise restoration and I understand the reason to oil every few weeks. My question is.... about how long until it has enough oil to stop oiling it every few weeks? Months?, years?, forever? Thanks in advance. Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan
@Uwannawatch7 ай бұрын
Greg, I think I'll do a short video about it. But I have a Yost 103 that I have oiled 4 times in 2 years with no rust. But the Reed 203 1/2 i did I have had to do it twice and My Hollands I've done 4 times since I refinished it. The best way to tell is you'll see surface rust form. Rub it down with 0000 steel wool, apply more oil leave the bulk of the oil on and let it dry eventually it will build up a layer and won't rust anymore. I hope this helps but eventually I'll do a little video going over it. ps you should restore a vise they are wonderful tools to do. Take care my friend.
