That tip would have been handy while cutting the meat, but you broke it off dude. The knife is called Benchmade mountain skinner, not the Benchmade mountain pry bar or chisel. They make knives with flat chisel tips for prying and chiseling, this was not one of those knives.

Followed the link here because I thought the vid might be better than the usual knife 'review' of some dude fondling a knife over a cutting mat and talking about how great it is for 'EDC.' Which, I suppose would be fine for an EDC knife, but is really silly when they are looking at an obvious field or game knife.

@jr22green Although it's called a skinner, Benchmade lists it as both an outdoor and hunting knife. This "misuse" is a good example of how it would stand up if you really needed to do other things with it.

We have to remember this is testing the knife. Another aspect to consider is if this is the only knife you have on you while out, the trip goes south, and now you have to hunker down for a day or two. What can the only knife you have on you do to help weather a less than ideal situation.

in all fairness, he was using this knife for WAY harsher purposes than it was designed for....It is a skinning knife, NOT a bushcrafting knife....batonning and chopping wood is kind of an unfair test... i find it did exceptional for what kind of knife it is...

I was fine with him using it for processing wood, but when he was dragging it on the wood laterally on that very first branch I realized he was actively trying to ruin the blade. Then I couldn't believe he tried to use it as a pry bar. Oh well, his money I suppose.

Had a nasty eye twitch when I saw you bushcrafting on a knife clearly not marked as one. Nice to know that the knife can't handle it (while very unsurprised with that). Would have been really nice to see the actual intended use first then commence with the abuse second. That said, I'm a firm believer of bringing a bushcraft and a hunting knife when hunting. Not very weight efficient, but it is nice to have knives you can depend on for their specific tasks

I WANT to see a knife used harder than how I intend to use it. He knows the knife is not meant for prying but wanted to see if it would handle it. The tip is going to be fairly thin as a skinner and even though S30V is pretty good at handling that kind of torque, it's not unbreakable. A good point someone made is that if this is the knife on you on a hunt out west or wherever, it shows the knife being used pretty harshly if a bad situation did arise. Any knife can skin a deer or elk with a sharp blade. Watching someone skin a deer will prove nothing to me. I've skinned deer with a Kershaw Chive even though that's not my first choice. I have the little brother to this knife in the Hidden Canyon Hunter and I find them first class knives for what they were designed to do. Another note worth mentioning, no one wants to carry a 2lb. bushcraft knife in the backcountry on an elk hunt when every ounce counts, trust me. This seems like a good compromise.

The knife is a purpose built skinner not a bushcraft knife. A better test would have been processing a hog or deer.

Yeah, I seemed to recall that at least from the camera's perspective, it didn't look like all that much torque was applied. I would never give you a hard time about that break, even if it had been my knife you were using. It would be interesting to see a tip thickness comparison with the seal pup elite, NW Ranger and some others because I don't own this knife and it doesn't look super thin on camera. It can be deceptive though.

The tip is a bit delicate because it needs to be somewhat thin and sharp for processing game. If you want a mega-strong tip get a tanto-style knife.

I'm having trouble choosing a knife. I am comparing the saddle mnt. skinner with the 202 Leuku & the steel, edge and all are the same... I started out wanting a bushcrafter, but I need a good skinner. Basically I'm hoping all you knife wizards could let me know if the Leuku can skin just as good because I would like an all-arounder, but If I get the saddle Mnt. I will not use it as much as I want.

Agreed, it's a more delicate blade for a reason, not to say it can't handle most other camp/crafting/survival tasks. It's definitely not designed for prying. Good video, keep them coming

I'd have to disagree and say it's a very strong tip given the thickness of it and the intended skinning it took a Bend and would have taken a Bend back have you been more careful

I think you did well. Beat the crap out of it. Most of us are not going to carry more than one knife with us when we head out. Hunting season comes around I have one I carry and a small back up in my pack. You need to know if you gotta baton with it, will it work...if not leave it at home. This looks like eastern/central Oregon.

A lot of the comments here are saying the knife sucks because the tip broke. It has a fine tip, its called a skinner and when skinning a fine tip is a plus. Also I'd consider pounding the knife into wood and torquing on it abuse.

I would agree that the knife does not suck. The intended purpose results in a fine tipped blade and one must be conscious of that. This was certainly hard use of the knife and IMO the intent of testing a blade...so others don't have to.

That'd be cool if you actually skinned a large animal with the Skinner. How it handles covered in blood, does it slip? The feel of it when pulled through the brisket. Is it hard to clean? etc. Breaking the tip off and viewing that as some sort of insight to the quality of the knife is kind of silly. The hacking on a branch does show it holds an edge though.

That is why I don't buy benchmade anymore, I have had pencil leads harder to break than some of their knives and the axis lock has given me plenty of trouble as well.

Sad. This is meant to be a razor sharp skinner, not a wood chisel. Get a cheap 1095 or some magnacut or 3V workhorse if you want to baton. Just wanted to know if the extra lenght and weight was worth it compared to the Hidden Canyon for skinning deers... Disapointed.

Cool video. That said, right tool for the right job, this is a skinner. This type of knife usually has a fine hollow ground edge, not really meant for a lot of batoning and certainly not for the abuse to the tip like that. If you want a general use belt knife and really want a benchmade, the bushcraft would probably be a better choice. On the other had I could imagine all the benchmade fanboys gasping when the tip broke, and it made me smile a little!

Recurve is absolutely no harder to sharpen the a non recurve, you just need a different sharpening tool, I have no issue sharpening a recurve and am by no means a sharpening guru.

Soooo.... your test was... "if I use it completely foolishly by digging into a knot and pivoting to the side... will it break?" Why is that even a test? "I've done it to other knives and it's been okay".... um, well, you're ruining knives for one. For two, the steal is softer on those other knives so the trade-off is the increased edge retention that Benchmade's S30V steel gives. Just stop ruining knives and you'll be better off....

It's nice to know that a blade is going to hold up to use even if it's not IN YOUR job description. He also obviously was prying with the knife just to see the strength of the blade. Who am I to say? Ask anyone who works with tools... apparently that's not you... if there is a way to use tools and a way to brake them. A sure way to break (or bend) your knife is to jam it directly into a knot and then pry. If you want to ruin your knife, go ahead. Doesn't meant it's a bad knife. If you're out "surviving" with this knife or any knife, that is a sure way to break or bend your survival tool. One doesn't need to do that to survive... no function in doing so.

Christ Opher Testing knife tip strength helps us buyers determine whether a knife is durable to hold up to whatever task we need it to do. Whether it be using the tip to clean out bone marrow while processing a deer or accidentally jabbing it into a stone while processing wood in a survival situation or even by battening. Tips break while battoning too. I'm not carrying this knife so I can also carry a whole tool belt with me, I'm carrying it to replace that tool belt. Needless to say in a survival situation I won't have much either, so a survival knife will have to take the role of many tools.

What he did was nothing...for a survival knife. Survival knives have softer steal that you can beat the shit out of and expect them not to break. S30v holds a great edge but is hard enough to chip or break if misused. That’s why it’s called a skinner and not a survival knife. He misused the shit out of this knife. If you spend that type of money on a knife, know what kind of knife you’re buying and learn how to use it the right way.

Overpriced,overrated,plain looking;the recurve is hard to sharpen;this s 30v is hard to sharpen.Looks like the heat treatment is better than Buck's s30v because is feels harder than Buck's open season series.At least it didnt chip while hitting concrete with it .A waste of time and money.I may throw this in the garbage and get a CFK with d2.Comes dull out of the box.
