Same happened to me last year I broke my arm I am 30 now didn’t jump on a board since I was 15 years old lol I got a board fell first time stepping back on lol then a couple weeks I decided I’d go do like a 50/50 grind up the side of a quarter pipe starting from me side I gained a lot of speed made it to the top but the board flew straight from under my feet when I went to go back down and I swung my left arm that I had already broke in the past btw lol and used it to catch myself but what happened was all my body weight went on to my arm and I knew how I feel on it that it didn’t feel right at all so I looked at my arm immediately and sure enough it was broken luckily a guy there drove me to the hospital I had to have surgery on the radius I broke both bones the unla and radius that was In may 2020 I still want to get back on a board but I think this time I’m definitely going to wear wrist guards this time especially some knee pads helmet and elbow pads I don’t think I’ll ever skate without them again lol

I'm 30 and I just learned switch crooks and b/3 360's. My suggestions would be: 1.) Cupsole shoes. Vulc shoes hurt too much and it kept me from skating as much. 2.) Aftermarket insoles. I bought FP Gamechanger insoles and my feet haven't hurt since. 3.)Stretch. If I thoroughly stretch before skating I ALWAYS get more of what I want to do done. 4.) Water. LOTS OF IT. I didn't have to drink as much when I was younger for some reason. 5.) Patience.

I will be 43 in a few weeks and I started skating with my daughter about five years ago. It's one of the best decisions I have ever made. I regret that I waited for so long to get up on the board, but I am still progressing and learning new stuff all the time. I am currently struggling with treflips, and I have done so for over a year. I am skating and having fun about four times each week, but I definitely feel my body's limitations, and sometimes I need to skip the flip tricks and focus on low impact tricks like shuvits and bigspins etc. I don't know how long I am going to be able to keep this up, but I am hoping that it will be for a long long time. I'm not sure what use me adding my words to a 3+ year old video is, especially as someone who is unskilled as I am with skating! BUT, I am now 39 and I started just as I turned 38 and I implore anybody who is slightly interested in trying skating, just do it. If you end up liking it, it's just the best thing in the world. I definitely vouch that you need to be ready to take some pain sometimes, sometimes in the morning after a heavy session, sometimes from a heavy slam but it's still the best. I regularly run 15km or so a week (3 times a week) and skate on average 3/4 days out of 7. My progress at my age is slower than youngsters, but after 14 months I've made some real progress. Sure I can't do this or that but I am learning and having so much fun doing so. Never do things in life to be good at them, do them because you love them, and if you follow the latter and keep at it, you'll probably end up being quite good!

Hi, I'm 63 years old and have started again (first in the age of 18) with skateboarding in januar. - Pushing, and first tricks in june. Safety first with helmet, ellbow- and handsafers. - Soft 85, small 55 wheels, hard bushings, bolzen shockpads and low trucks are my 'pimps' at my 8.375 mid concave huf-board. Mid skateshoes, and after some 'little stones' it becomes better. Training - because of job - once a week. - My balance and reflexes becomes better and i have much fun. - After one stroke 4 weeks trouble with my left knee. Thats all 'damages' since 6 months.

I stopped skating about 12 years ago and not really sure why. I am 35 now and I started back up about a year ago. I am a lot better than I ever was when I was younger. I am not sure why, maybe just because I am more focused and understand it more at this age. I could do all the basic trick pretty well when I was younger, but never really progressed to anything crazy. At 35 I can land Casper Flips pretty consistently something I didn't even think about when I was younger where a 360 flip was my hardest flip trick. I went from knowing maybe 6 or 7 grinds/slides to learning like 20 where I can do ones like kickflip bs noseslide and fs noselide 270 out and even darkslides although I could do those before. Skating at this age just reminds me of when life was easier and I remember skating all day as a kid without a care in the world. It brings me back to that feeling and I go harder at this age and think I have hurt myself more than ever, but I don;t care. I am trying to learn nollie and switch, but the progression there is very slow. Can only do shove its and 180s really. Like others on here said, not sure how long I have left, but I am making the best of it and I want to make a decent video part just for myself to have and look back on. Just wish I had more time to skate.

I just read this reply, and it really inspired me. I’m 30, and just started again about a week ago. I skated like a real setup from 8y/o-15y/o straight, and I was pretty good. Had a nice big catalog of flip tricks and different grinds. Even my switch game was on. As i said, 15 years later now, I put together a board. I used to ride like a 7.0, now I’m on an 8.5. And my trucks are 149’s. I just left the park by me in Harlem, and I’m feeling a little more comfortable. Im hoping that within 2 months, or summers end, I’ll be past where I was too. Your post was inspiring, and u being 5 or 6 years older than me, I know I can do this! Thanks a lot for your post man!

I just wrote the same comment. I am better now because I am as a person more chill and just enjoying it. As a kid I did more gaps and rails and crazy stuff. But I never felt as in control. Now I can have fun on vert... I still can do some flip tricks. But there is more awareness the whole time. Also back in the day there weren't so many parks... And skating was more TABOO so you were always kinda looking out for cops... Now everything is so relaxed.

Im 30 and am like 2 weeks of being back into skateboarding after a few years of barely being on a board. Your comment is very inspirational! My skills are already nearing the point of where I left off skateboarding, but that time was years of not really ever progressing that much. Being a few years older and wiser, I'm hopeful that I can skate in a way that will actually cause me to break through that wall. I now try to take care of my body more and it is motivating to have exercises that I can do to benefit my skating. It also makes sense to skate in a more structured way instead of just trying a bunch of random tricks and only landing them once or twice if at all and getting frustrated, thus not having fun and not skating as much....I need to practice on getting the simple tricks perfect and then try to progress off that because otherwise things just seem to get messy and my body confuses it self. I also wear elbow and knee pads now, I've fallen like a dozen times in my handful of sessions and none of them have hurt at all. A few slip outs from under committing on front board slides on the flat bar may have made me quit skating again if it wasn't for my elbow pads lol.

I was talking about this w my local shop owner, I believe because when you're over 30 you don't have as much energy as you did when you were a teen, things hurt now. Things are stiff etc. Plus I agree about the understanding things more too, you kind of have a better grasp of how things work and why they work, you can solve the trick better etc. Not all cases tho, these kids now are insane but for us yeah, we've had time to grow into our bodies and develop them.

Right on about framing progression correctly. One other thing I would add, at least for me, is how the wisdom of being older has taught me to understand fear differently. I pay attention to it better and look for the edge of what I am comfortable with so that I am just a little bit uncomfortable - exactly where I want to be. I don't want to be where I feel fear come over me like a wet blanket, or just stay so completely in my comfort zone I really don't progress - finding the edge serves as a guide for the next progression point, which is something my younger self was terrible at progression wise.

I broke my ankle at 15 and had to have surgery where I had screws put in my ankle. that took me out for a year, then skated less often after this and ended up getting really bad pain every winter, eventually I kept getting the pain into June. REALLY made me lose my nerve on the board a bit, Had surgery a couple years ago to remove the screws and touch wood, no pain since then! I've really been thinking about skateboarding again since the last year, but since starting playing in a band I've been a bit nervous as last year our drummer sprained his wrist just skating to work which caused us to lose a fair bit of money. But I think I really want to skate again, and given this pandemic has pretty much had all our gigs cancelled anyway seems like the best time to start. Subscribed!

Grew up major skate rat, basically quit in early 20s because couldn’t risk injury and missing work. Things changed around age 30 and I started to skate occasionally for the next few years. 36 now and the last couple years I spent re learning all my old tricks. In the last couple months, have added on to my bag of tricks and cleaned up my old ones. Can’t believe how much fun I’m having and how I’m learning new stuff every session. Have put a lot of focus on learning dynamic strength and flexibility exercises over the past 4 years which seems to be helping with confidence and recovery time as well as injury prevention. Still take some nasty slams and have been nursing injuries over the years but nothing in my adult life (intimacy, financial wealth) has come anywhere close to matching the satisfaction I get from learning how to link existing tricks or unlock new ones. Your guidance here is precisely in line with my experience. Cheers homie!

Appreciated this video! I'm 35 now, more than 20 years into skating almost exclusively ledges, rails, and flatground (I suck at transition - had no parks w/ ramps growing up, spent a lot of time street skating). Over the last 2 years I've managed to get fairly on-point with only a few minor injuries, and all the pieces of advice you give resonate a lot. Momentum and conditioning feels important - getting out there consistently, at a steady pace. Non-skating exercises are boring for sure but are absolutely crucial for me. The biggest thing I've found is that each try needs to be super deliberate. I can't just fling myself at a new trick anymore and see if it works. I need to be intentional, need to build up to things, need to minimize the number of times I eat shit (keep it to regular, controlled bails). But also I'm feeling the benefits of having been on a skateboard for multiple decades - I feel more controlled and "intelligent" than ever, just less bouncy and athletic. Some of my "peak" tricks feel like they could be the last time I ever do them, but also who knows - I wonder how far into the my late 30s and 40s I can keep it going?

Thanks for the video ... I started skating again 6 weeks ago... I am 60 and prior to that i last skated at 21. In between that I have maintained surfing on and off and whilst I initially brought my skateboard to compliment my surfing... its like its now the other way as I am now hooked on skating ... I started off slow with re learning how to push and roll, then managed slow turns all under the cover of our garage... then came the helmet and I was off each night to a local park just up the road... then came the pads ... and I started venturing out in day light to the local park... and now getting some carving together.... then last week it was off to a near by skate park... started off slow and cautious and the longer I stayed...the carves were coming on.... so now it’s like whoa.....I came off at the skate park after I got my confidence up and it was like wow... this protective gear is good.... I went full length face down with a slide and somehow I fell and slid totally flat....a big thing for me is trying to be realistic.... there are some amazing young skaters out there and that can be unnerving.... but for me I start out on the smallest ramps and with a bit of a push I can get around with some turns and curves.... I feel alive !!

Ben; Without even talking about my age, ( Born before JFK was assassinated---WHAT?) let me just say that you really made a solid video. You were articulate, honest and shared some extremely relevant and practical factors that pertain to skating as an adult. We knew everything when we were young but re-learning and re-visiting the deck at 30 plus is definitely a profound experience. You managed to inspire and challenge the viewer with both your insights and your skating. Well done and best wishes. I hope that your date was fabulous! Peace. P.S. Yeah...could not miss the scooter kid! he, he.

Nice video. I got back to skate at 28 after 13 years off. I broke my arm 2 weeks later :) , got healed and returned. Since then I have been doing it great, trying to get more momentum. An advice for anybody trying to get back to skate is to practice falling, on grass first and then on concrete ground, that helps to prepare your body to relax on future accidents, that’s something very natural for kids but you loss it after years sitting on a desk 8 hours every day.

I'm 39 and getting back into it. I could push around as a kid but wasn't great at it. Then in my early 20's a friend got me into mini ramps and pools and I loved carving around, but we fell out a bit and I lost my board somewhere in the mix and that was that. But now my daughter rides a scooter and I decided to get a new board to ride at the park with her. Loving it. And I wasn't all that athletic as a kid but bloomed a bit later, I feel stronger and more coordinated as an adult and I'm determined to learn to drop in and ollie. Also, I've been remodeling my house and also do general contracting (mostly plumbing) for work - found your carpentry channel first and was surprised to find this. Small world. Learned a lot about mudding from you! Thanks!

I started skating the first time when I was about 10. Just ollies, shove its and some mini ramp fun. Rode a lot in my late teens and early twenties which was the best time of my life but went through dozens of boards and trucks (220lbs lean weight then) a year skating too big sets and overly technical tricks for my level. 50lbs and 15 years later I am back on a board. Just to cruise again and do some flat land stuff. Lose some weight and enjoy the feeling again. I have no desire to hit a 5 set again but some smooth flat trick is motivating me to be back out skating..... In a very secluded spot ;-)

Thanks for sharing this video with us. I am 39 and will be 40 next month. I picked up skating this past July. This has forced me to change my diet and do exercises just to build my core and do longer sessions. Sleep is my #1 enemy. 4 boys single dad still getting it in. I skate with the community and they push and inspire me. They also say I inspire them as well. Keep it up Ben. It's been amazing. Now if I can get this Ollie while rolling...

Dude you rock. Im 34 and stopped skating hard around 25 bc of ankle problems and not doing ankle and leg strength training. Physical therapy is essential in progressing in this sport. I could kickflip 5 boards stacked when i was 24 lol. If i kept my body strong and not just destroying myself until i quit riding it would have been different. I slowly getting back! You are for sure an inspiration dude! Keep skating.

I'm 28 now and have just picked it back up because a friend of mine wanted me to teach him to skate. He's 26 so he is starting and I feel like I'm starting all over again. Struggled with basic tricks for so long back in the last 2 weeks I have gotten my rhythm back. I'm enjoying it more now then I did when I had to quit

Great advice. I got back into skating in 2012 at 24, and been progressing day by day. It's gotten a wee bit harder now considering of my health, but Time is no issue when you work 3 to 4 days a week for 12 hours, and you have the same amount of time off. I know that I won't be jumping down stairs, gaps, and doing rails and ledges forever, but at least now going into my 30's I'll soak it up while I can, and the same applies with snowboarding too, in which I do that too. But, you should exercise, eat right, and be stress free if you want to push into your 40's. Great video, and great channel, bro.

However when i do go skate i love that feeling of landing a new trick even if i slam 20 or 30 times. Skateboarding is not about being the best, I'm far from it. Its about fun, creativity, and discovering that self drive within yourself. Glad to see someone who is still doing it while maintaining a busy life. Keep pushing and enjoi.

Really good video, and so encouraging to see so many other still skating or getting back into it well into adulthood. At the start of this year I decided to get back into skating after 25 years, mainly because I remembered that my younger skating years were my happiest. I just turned 47 and I think stopping was one of the worst mistakes of my life so far, but regardless, I'm loving it! After so many years with no skating, I've had to start from scratch again but at least I've been progressing at a faster rate than before because once I got my "skating legs" back and got comfortable on the board again I found that the muscle memory for the basic tricks was still there. I like what you said about self expectations, I came in with no expectations at all so I've been enjoying it right from the start even when I couldn't do a single trick and now every time I nail a "new" trick, it's a bonus and I feel stoked. Keep up the vids and keep skating, everyone. Age is no barrier.

A new vid, yea. Im drinking a coffee too. The age factor dosen't really apply or effect me currently. As crazy as that sounds. Its true, I have very unusual circumatances in my my life where the age factor may not be a factor until late in my life. Like spider man bitten by a spider that changes things in a strange way. I began skateboarding in 2015 and no where near my peak. Loved watching your progression session, nice stuff.

My whole life used to be skating growing up, since I was 10 years old. I'm 40 now and live 2 blocks away from a skate park. But, I can't skate. My back has been screwed up for 15 years after a bad car accident. I can't even ollie without feeling like someone stabbed me in the spine. It's torture staring at that skate park every day and knowing I can't skate. Sure, I can roll around a bit, but not being able to ollie makes it pointless. I was actually pretty good in my day. Not pro level, but maybe close to amateur level. but that was the 90's, being good then is way different than being good in 2018.

@ bassage13 - that really sucks. my sympathy for your loss pain frustration. maybe u can find another hobby that gives u lot of pleasure and fulfillment that your disability will allow. After almost 20 years of not believing in God or Christianity for many reasons, i came back to a strong belief through extreme circumstances which forced me to cry out to God first then eventually praying to Jesus specifically, all in an experiment to see if God would help me and also do it in a way that beyond good luck or probability would prove he exists and is the truth. All Christians do not get healed however but in your case it is worth a try. Try my "Jesus experiment". Pray for God to give you the evidence you need to believe. For me miracles happened that were too numerous to be coincidence. When i prayed to Jesus specifically that's when the super detailed miracles happened. Try to read and follow the rules of the bible while u do this experiment (not easy but worth it). I found that the more obedient i was to God and his rules the wayyyyyyyy more he would bless me BIG TIME. hope u will try it. please reply and keep me posted how it goes. prayers and best wishes to you!

I’m 27 and healthy so I can’t say that I relate to that, however I realized that letting go of certain things is true power. Skateboarding is great but it’s one outlet for enjoying life amongst others. There is just a connection that one forms with specific things especially if they were done young, the nostalgia factor comes into play and makes letting go of an activity even harder. That’s one thing I tell myself all the time, if I can’t skate, Ill direct my energy somewhere else, thank God skateboarding isn’t the only thing in the world!
@bryanbierly64654 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this video. I'm in my late twenties and getting back into skating is super hard at the moment. I like your perspective on gaining momentum from when you last picked up your board. Viewing your progress from your recent starting point is better than trying to compare your abilities to when you were at your best. That only creates frustration with skating and the whole point is to have fun with it. Sessions are more gratifying when you can practice the old stuff, so at least you're not regressing in certain areas, but allocating time to new tricks or ideas keeps it fresh and challenging. Great advice!
