Light actually can bend. A beam of light called the airy beam actually bends in air on its own. At CREOL at UCF they used a beam and a spatial light modulator to program the light to bend whenever.

I want to see the wall to the left. Because you can put a flashlight up to a gallon of water and it will lumanate the entire bottle, does that mean I can bend light up, down, back, and diagonal?

i'm not quite sure I understand how to apply the angle aspect. In the demonstration the beam of light is parallel to the ground, and it's aimed at the opening of the stream. Where does the 48.8 degrees come in? Should I imagine the arc of water broken down into little straight segments, and determine the angle of the segment relative to a line perpendicular to where the beam of light strikes the segment?

To improve this demonstration, use a hot needle or soldiering iron and melt a perfect hole in the side of the bottle. You want water flow that is like a perfect extruded curving cylinder (like toothpaste), not turbulent flow that is actually breaking into thousands of droplets soon after exit. :-) Cool demonstration, and fantastic explanation! :-)

It would be cool to make a hydro-optic cable instead of a fiber optic cable. Probably not practical, but a fun way to demonstrate the similarity of the physics. I also wonder how the optics would change with different liquids. I know water has a certain reflection index, but it would be interesting to see this done with a collection of different liquids like ethanol, or PG. I guess it would still work, but I'm no physicist.

All our school life, we've been taught that light travels in straight lines. Here's a cool experiment that'll prove that light can also bend. Or so you can make people think. That means you're either lying to me by making me think that light bends or my school lied to me. Light does not bend, in this example, only the water in which the light travels bends.
