Hardly any other country in Europe is so strongly connected to the sea as the Netherlands. With a coastline of 2.000 kilometers, almost half of the country lies below sea level. Without protection, it would be completely flooded by the North Sea. But the Dutch are in their element when just men-tioning the seaside. Up until a hundred years ago, they used to pump the water from the lowlands back to the canals behind the dykes. Later they built modern flood barriers, huge dams and even laboriously wrested large areas from the unrelenting sea.

The Wadden Sea is about to lose its status with unesco because the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia fail to protect it. I live 2 km from the Wadden Sea. This whole documentary os so alien to me, as if we really have vast areas of nature, we don’t.

I guess I'm curious why the Dutch wants this land to remain a grassland? Surely a forested land would build up a more solid stable environment?

it depends on the native plants. many grasses and shrubs have roots that go deep into the soil many feet/meters. the right roots can mean the difference between a stable hill and mudslides, something common where im from. the plants chosen to cover the hills after housing development were shallow rooted non natives. this was an issue for decades only now being fixed with native deep rooting plants

There is no nature in The Netherlands, those horses need extra food in the winter there is not enough fore all of them. The Oostvaardersplassen are man made. the animals are kept behind a fence and cannot migrate

Dear textbook author: i am a Professional lector in German. How do you come to build a sentence Like: "the Wind played a Hand in..." Instead of saying: "the Wind was crucial for.." or "the Wind was the cause for"? I think you should reconsider your own mother tongue. IT IS truly ridiculous to phrase: "the Wind played a Hand in..." What Kind of phrase can be added for expressing what you intended to say? Thanks a Lot for elucidation. Katharina zwing
