Sam is the perfect example of what a psychopath is. Someone who genuinely can't feel any empathy towards anyone else because of how they were born.
@scentedpapers65693 ай бұрын
well knowing each other for 40 years means within that timeline Sam had seen Nigel as a child or as a teenager before he left Woodbrook. I imagine this was as close as a family she could get taking care of her friend's son and being there for them when Lola's husband died. it just makes the ending incredibly more tragic. sam did have to kill nigel to cover herself up but Lola? she's dying. she has no reason to tell on her son or her closest friend. she loved them both so so dearly.

@@publicenemygelo6204 ok thats. One of my grievances w the comic's pacing too. It's so linear and dumb actually but Sam was only following along with whoever is allergic to lavanders as her main clue 😭😭😭. That's jus the simplest explaination there is. If it were longer maybe there would be a bigger mouse chase that didn't feel as linear like another murder or death outside of Nigel derailing the case, etc. and we'd circle back to This in the later issues lmao

A few things. 1. Sam is the “The lesser of two evils” trope where the lesser evil isn’t a misunderstood character or wanting redemption, she’s just not as a loose cannon like Nigel. 2. I was kinda hoping there was more of a “who did it” type story rather than the killer revealing himself to the protagonist. But I still found myself on the edge of my seat. 3. Who else gets an ad right before the bang?
@slugalxii37813 ай бұрын
I think people not liking that Sam isn’t taking accountability for her actions is fair. Though, I think it’s kinda suiting for her character. Sam is a bad person with twisted morals, she isn’t taking accountability because she thinks what she’s doing is what’s best for the town plus herself. So, her getting rid of some good people for the price of having the town be back to normal just makes sense to me. I would love to see more content by the same author or just ones with similar vibes, I enjoyed following the story! (^,^)/

Y'know, I might change my mind on this as I spend more time processing the ending, but at least in this moment, I feel like this comic did an excellent job of making readers feel uneasy and conflicted. The author/artist could have easily gone the route of, "Hell yeah, Sam the heroic serial killer!", but the events of the climax really slapped us in the face with the uncomfortable question: "Should we have been rooting for Sam at all?" Ultimately we were reminded of the cold, self-serving person Sam truly was, and left to sit with that. So I agree, it's not a morally cut-and-dry ending like we're used to in a lot of stories. But I think Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees' overall tone and ending worked in its favor to make it more memorable as a result. Ah, sorry if this wasn't the kind of response you were looking for. I guess this is what happens when I haven't had a blog in ten years to process and spell out my thoughts on fiction, lol.
@covepack_net1893 ай бұрын
@@oliverwolfe8225 It's okay, I think the ending -of this story at least- didn't really need to make Sam accountable for her crimes, the whole story is about Sam losing her status quo and fighting to get it back, so it fits that things just go back to normal. Will Sam just "take a long vacation to the city" and continue her killings? Will she go at her house and chill, then come back to killing? We don't know what she really means by hibernation, all we have for sure is that at the end of the day, she is still a serial killer on the lose, and nobody knows, and they'll probably never know. She'll die and the people of Woodrock will cry at her funeral as they remember her as the sweet heroic woman who killed the horrible Nigel, the families of the people she killed will never find their loved ones bodies.
@zombieeightpack13813 ай бұрын
I feel the ending is appropriate, given the subject matter and themes of the comic. One important thing to take note of with Sam is that she is the only character that represents a carnivore (a bear) while every other character is an omnivore, whether it be a mouse, a fox, a sheep, a pig, so on and so on…Sam is literally a monster hidden in plain sight. The reason she tells Nigel “You’re not a killer” is because he’s a killer made from his nihilistic views of the world, while Sam is *born* this way. In the end, Nigel had someone he cared about (his Mom) while Sam couldn’t care less. The point of the comic is to show that true killers, true predators, are *born,* not made. They’re a product of nature as much as any other average person.
@Paracetamolecito3 ай бұрын
I understand how some people want a narrative that gives a direct cause-effect ending based on morals and justice, but its also good to depict bad people not being punished at times bc oh thats so infuriating and frustrating! That evokes new emotions on a reader, not everything needs to be addressed about the morality of a murderer, some really try to depict murderers as either gross monsters or "justifiably" good ("they only kill bad people you see!!") Sam is a morally evil woman and thats great! She is complex and unjustified to be like that yet she is and will probably still be herself no matter what, its nice to see complex women in fiction.
@Camix-GirARTS2 ай бұрын
Yes I totally agree with your comment. In real life the sad truth is that not every bad person gets punished for their actions. There is around 250000 unsolved murder cases in the US alone, and that’s without counting the number of unresolved disappearances that is also very high. Sure it’s harder for murderers or anyone else to go undedected than it was in the time the story take place, but It’s very plausible that a certain number of people who are just like Samantha are behind thoses unsolved murders or disappearances

Personally I do feel SOMEWHAT bad for Lola because she trusted Sam as a friend but only to be ruthlessly murdered by her in the end. Also, despite what most people say, I think many would find it very difficult to willingly turn in their own flesh and blood. There are comments that say the ending is disappointing or bad because Sam wasn't brought to justice. That's the Hayes Code talking, for a long time a lot of stories had to have villains brought to justice, because it was believed just showing actions going unpunished was morally bad. But sometimes it's more interesting if the world returns to a status quo here, because usually it's shown as a good thing, especially in younger fiction. Which I feel like this stories artstyle is almost emulating. But things 'going back to how things where' is actually a horrific ending. And let's face it, The two people who found out Sam's secret were the worst kind.
@robotx92853 ай бұрын
Frankly, at what point of the story is there any indication that Sam was gonna face justice? She wasn't remorseful for anything, she wasn't even regretful of her crimes, she never lost total control of herself. She just got herself back together, killed her enemy than returned to her perfect life.
@NoNo-vv4vo3 ай бұрын
man the ending is sad but it makes sense, Samantha is basically a sociopath(or whatever the term is now, antisocial personality disorder?). Won't spoil but I can why she'd rationalize what she did in her own self-serving way. one odd thing that's curious is that Nigel planted the paint cans in the store, and it does seem that Samantha has been killing for a VERY long time. It would be strange if they'd have found a victim missing for twelve or so years, like the dog(?) woman at the coffee shop, when Nigel would've probably been very young, too young to be out killing city-goers, by that point. Chances are Samantha probably won't stay away from justice once the police are done cataloguing those bodies and cans

I think how I know Sam's arc will ultimately end in a follow-up story. Her own methodology will be her undoing. She commits crimes in the city always at random. But because she never bothers to vet her victims, it's only a matter of time before she kills a person she shouldn't have. Someone tied to money and power. This gets her final adversary unleashed at her: a professional assassin. Cold-blooded, trained, and quite proud of her skill at violence. The absolute worst in city folk, possessing a deep and terrible sadism. In so many ways, she outclasses Sam. Unsurprisingly she's a fox. If Sam hides in plain sight, her opponent lurks in the shadows. She makes it clear she'll happily burn down the whole village....if Sam keeps giving her trouble. "If your quarry goes to ground, leave no ground to go to" is one of her mottos. But she underestimates Sam's resourcefulness. Knowing time is not on her side, Sam moves quickly to deal with the terror from the city's underworld. In the end, Sam kills the assassin.....but is crippled for life and doomed to feel her sanity slowly collapse on her. She is too physically damaged to commit any more murders.

Nigel likes to make a scene and stir up fear and chaos within the town, even if it means he might get caught. He’s sloppy and wild, whereas Sam’s calm and calculating. I like how Sam represents the “perfect” psychopath. Seemingly no attachments, not even to her best friend of over 40yrs. Meanwhile Nigel was horrified over his mother’s census removal. Even his attempts to form a bond with Sam, show how different they are. Nigel a wannabe k!77er vs. Sam a true professional 😅

Got to agree with some folks, I would have preferred to NOT return to the status quo.

Sam's voice actress reminds me of Justine from Amnesia.

My sister introduced me to your dubs. They’re very nice and I think all the voices and the sound design fits well. I love this story but this ending felt off, rushed, and unthematic, like I was left to wonder what was the point. Sam lives on going back to her regular deeds, kills her friend and her equally murderous son. I felt like they were trying to go somewhere by comparing Nigel and Sam especially when it seemed Nigel wasn’t a big part of the community as Sam was but they didn’t stick the landing. I kinda feel like Sam should’ve died and Nigel should’ve took over her role of killing to feel sane and controlled possibility after seeing how Sam brutalized Lola with no regards. Everything really felt too simple for Sam to solve and like the author wanted to be done.

I was kind of hoping the Sheriff would show up at the last second to shoot Sam dead, honestly. Of course, that would mean Nigel would survive, but i don't know how Curare works, but I'd hope it would put Nigel out of commission where he could survive but can't full recovery from the paralysis n unable to hurt anyone ever again. Just the right dose of karma end all things

Ohhh I see She's a sociopath, she lacks empathy and doesn't understand love I don't understand this type of characters Cuz no matter how many people she kills, the lives she ruins its not going to change. That empty emotion isn't going to change But great video tho, who's the singer of the outro

Terrible ending imo. Sam 100% did not deserve a happy ending, but things kind of work out for her despite murdering her best friend. She gets off scot-free despite her crimes. Also kind of disappointing the mystery and conflict between the two killers was so anticlimactic and short. Great concepts, liked the story overall I think, but that's a very critical support.

Sadly feels a little disappointing. I guess it just ends too cleanly. But I guess that's kind of the point so I can't hate it.
